Yates advance to state

Yate's Brandon Peters show victory nets after game at the Merrell Center

Peters carry Yates
All season long Yates has been chastised about the margin of victory over their opponents. But scoring in triple digits seems to be what the Yates Fans expect from their boys. Once Yates had reached the 90 point mark, a fan could be heard saying, “10 more points and I can go home.”
An overflow crowd watched the crimson and gold put the finishing touches on another victory. As the clock wound down shouts could be heard throughout the stadium “ooh aw third ward high.”
The Yates Lions (32-0) picked up their 56th straight victory, defeating a very good LaMarque Cougar team 101-83 to win their second straight class 4A region III title Saturday night at the Merrell Center, with the win they advance to the state tournament in Austin.
“We knew he could jump like he did (Brandon Peters) we didn’t really think he could shoot like he can, he’s a good all around player. He will be good next year for college,” LaMarque’s Guard Julien Lewis said.
The Cougars were able get around the press with minimal problems racing down the court to the basket where they picked up easy points, early. They led after one quarter 26-22.
Late in second quarter is when the Lions used a 14-0 run to take a 47-35 lead but the Cougars (34-3) clawed back with a long inbound pass to Lewis who went straight to the basket for the layup and Jordan Dotson’s running three pointer right before the buzzer cut the lead to 4, 48-44.
Poor outside shooting and Turnovers consumed the cougars in the third quarter. Up 75-61, that’s when the Lions began the feeding frenzy as they coasted to yet another win.
Brandon Peters led the Lions in scoring with 33 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks.
“When it comes to the will to win and the mind set (speaking about Brandon Peters) but not to say as good as but as far as a mind set same thing as Kobe, Michael those guys just want to do everything they can. I’m not saying he as good as Kobe and Michael but he has the same mind set,” Yates Coach Wise said.
Yates has overcome the 100 point mark in fourteen straight games. That ties the record held by Hobbs (N.M.)
