It won’t be unusual to see Mater Dei and St. John Bosco at the top of the polls. Both have dominated, winning the last six national championships.
Both teams Hail from the same conference (Trinity League), which is typically one of the toughest in the country. Seven schools comprise the panel: Jserra, Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran, Rosary Academy, San Margarita, Servite, and St. John Bosco.
The showdown of No. 1 vs. No. 2 watched the Monarchs beat St. John Bosco, 17-7 last season in conference play but later fell to the No.2 Braves, 24-22 in the postseason. The Braves routed Serra, 45-0, in the CIF Open Division state championship, leading to its national title.
It’s a new season. Mater Dei has a new coach, but the chain of success looks to continue. Head coach Frank McManus will lead the Monarchs following Bruce Rollinson’s retirement, who led the charge for 34 seasons, compiling a 339-86-2 record.
McManus coached the defensive backs for the last seven years.
Like last season, Mater Dei tops the charts, and Bosco at No. 2. 19 starters helped land the Monarchs in the driver’s seat. Still, the pressure is on to win another title.
As always, expect the Florida schools to be competitive. No. 4 IMG Academy leads the loaded state and could battle for the top spot before the season ends.
Miami Central and St. Francis round out the top five.
