Wildcats put Mustang’s playoff hopes on hold

Bad free throw shooting
Keeps Mustangs down
Late in the second quarter Humble (18-14) (8-3) went on an 8-0 run to take an 8 point lead 29-21 and never looked back, beating The Aldine Mustangs 54-44 on their home court Friday night. The win kept the Wildcats playoff hopes alive and a tight grip on second place in district 19-5A. They will close out the season next week at home against arch rival Atascocita.
Aldine (10-7) (5-6) entered the game needing a win to secure a playoff spot. It was not to be as the Mustangs struggled from the free throw line converting 8-18 coupled with key turnovers.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 6-0 start with a couple of fast break lay-ups and a short jumper from Jamar Williams and William Whyte.
Not long after, Humble went on a 5-0 run, high lighted by Jr. D. J. Southworth’s 3 pointer.
”We didn’t help our self missing free throws and a few turnovers at the end of the game,” said Aldine’s Coach Smith.
Things stayed close until Aldine held their largest margin of the game at 17-10 with 2:00 minutes to go in the first quarter but the Wildcats battled back within two points to close out the first quarter of play 17-15 in Aldine’s favor.
Free throws became a factor for the Mustangs while Humble begin to settle into their game.
Kyndhal Hill’s short jumper in the lane tied the game at 21 with 3:45 to go in the second quarter. Then a 3 from Serone Batiste gave the Wildcats the lead they would never give up, 24-21 with 3:00 minutes to go in the second quarter.
“We know all the Aldine schools are going to be athletic, so we try to prepare for them in practice.” “We try to put a premium on rebounding, attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line, our kids did a great job tonight,” said Coach Martinez of Humble.
In second half more misses at the charity line and cold shooting from the Mustangs helped Humble to pad their lead.
