Could this be the year of the Monarchs
A look at the national high school football scene takes us back to the most notable football powers we watch each year.
However, parity seems to be creeping closer each year. Last year, Bishop Gorman, who won the 2016 title, boasted similar talent as IMG, Cedar Hill, Centennial, and Grayson just to name a few. That’s what makes these battles so much more important to the ranking system.
With that said, Mater Dei begins the 2017 season as the top team in the country. The Monarchs are well armed with as much as talent as any team in the nation. Starting with the likes of five-Star quarterback JT Daniels, who threw 67-touchdowns while passing for nearly 5,000 yards as a sophomore. He will also have his favorite target back in five-star receiver Amon-RA St. Brown.
The road they will travel down this season is loaded with huge bumps as well as pot holes. But an undefeated season could spell national champion.
The journey will begin with Bishop Amat on August 25th. The following week will send Mater Dei to Las Vegas, NV where No. 3 Bishop Gorman will play host.
The schedule only gets tougher when No.10 Bergen Catholic visits the Monarchs on September 16th in Mission Viejo, California.
Later, factor in, if both teams are undefeated when the Monarchs travel to Bellflower, California on October 16th for a conference matchup with arch-rival and No. 2 St. John Bosco, it could be the game of the year with national title implications on the line.
IMG rounds out the top 25 at No. 4, followed by No. 5 St. Thomas Aquinas and No. 6 Centennial, who is as equally talented as any team in California.
