Although Aubrey Coleman suffers with a thigh contusion he knew if he could stay on the floor his teammates would be relying on him to lead them to victory. Instead the Cougars got a team effort.
Colman’s 34 points,8 rebounds in 36 minutes was more than enough to help Houston along the way.
The University of Houston defeated the Memphis Tigers 92-75 Wednesday night at Hofheinz Pavilion in front of 4,000 fans.
The Tigers couldn’t keep pace with focused Cougars as they worked the ball through every part of their offense. When they needed to run they ran, when they needed half court offense they set it up. Inside scoring, outside scoring, dunks and precision passing worked well for the Cougars.
“We changed our offense, they (Memphis) saw an entirely different offense then the one they saw the first time they played us. We ran a lot of slip screens, we set a screen and slip it. We got the ball in the paint not just off the dribble but the pass,” UH coach Tom Penders said.
At one point Houston (14-13, 6-7 C-USA) was up by as many as 22 points, assuring an end to the 11 game losing streak.
Memphis (20-8, 10-3) could never stay consistent converting a basket to every two or three Cougar scores.
Cougar’s Freshman forward Kendrick Washington was a bright spot with 16 points and 9 rebounds.
Kelvin Lewis added 18 points.
With four games remaining the Cougars hope to enter Conference USA on a strong note.
