Campbell brother’s lead offense and defense while quarterback Boyd fills open voids with six passing touchdowns
Humble – Atascocita’s quarterback Daveon Boyd made the most of his night, throwing six touchdowns, fueled by seven Kingwood turnovers, and its defense surrendered seven points, as it rolled to a 48-7 victory on Friday night at Turner Stadium.
With the win, Atascocita improves to (8-1, 4-1) and will play its last regular season game Friday night when it host Conroe before its bye, the following week.
The Campbell brothers smile when they are giving to a good cause. Much like Friday night when both had a hand in Atascocita’s offense and defense.
Defensive back Justin Campbell led Atascocita’s defense with three turnovers and ten tackles. That wasn’t the only bright spot on defense as senior defensive lineman Jackson Reed and linebacker Niles Tuihalangingie showed that the Eagles were up to the task by making several tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage.
Boyd threw touch passes including 14, 15, 26, 27, 42, and 48. He finished his night 25/40/1 for 413 yards and six touchdowns.
Boyd’s successful night started up front with the blocking of the offensive line, including Kendrix Burford, Sammi Cosmi, Kendall Dearth, Amon Simon and Logan Stump. All of whom formed a wall of protection.
The blocking up front allowed Boyd time to fine receiver Niyl Campbell, who had a blockbuster night receiving with 12 catches for 209 yard and three touchdowns.
Campbell’s 15-yard touchdown reception opened the scoring with 10:20 left in the first quarter. That gave Atascocita a 7-0 lead after David Heaton’s extra point kick.
A turnover set up Boyd’s second touchdown toss to Campbell, which covered 61 yards.
Campbell later added two more scoring receptions. One covered 42 yards and the other 48 to help the Eagles build a 28-0 lead.
Locating Campbell wasn’t the Mustangs problem, denying the sure-handed receiver was next to impossible. Throughout the first half, Boyd found Campbell open in the Mustangs secondary nine times for 186 yards.
Atascocita’s pass-happy offense watched Boyd hook up with receiver Campbell, the older brother of defensive back Justen, for three first quarter scores.
Kingwood then went to the air with limited success as quarterback TJ West finished 5/10/2 for 87 yards.
Later, Mustangs’ receiver Eric Hammersmith turned a short pass into first-down yardage, but a jarring tackle forced the ball loose at the 21, where Campbell recovered the ball.
Right after Atascocita ran off six plays before Kingwood (5-3, 3-1) return the favor with a 36-yard interception return. That gave the Mustangs possession at Atascocita’s 41-yard line.
Meanwhile, its bad fortune continued when West miss handled the snap from center, resulting in a fumble as the Eagles’ linebacker Norris Celestine recovered the ball at Atascocita’s 40.
Kingwood marched 61 yards to open the third quarter, as tailback Damon Young battled his way across the goal line from three yards out. That would be all for the Mustangs on a night where turnovers overwhelm it.
With two weeks left in the regular season, Kingwood has a shot to make the playoffs as it travels to Woodforest Bank Stadium to face College Park on Friday and will host the Woodlands the following Friday.
