Four unanswered second half touchdowns lift Westfield

It was suppose to be a learning experience for first year quarterback Kriegan Bridges but instead, he turned it into a productive debut.
At Tully Stadium Friday night, quarterback Kriegan Bridges led the Westfield Mustangs in their opening game of the season, to a 37-20 comeback victory over previously undefeated Memorial.
The victory gives the Mustangs their third successive defeat of the Memorial.
Four unanswered second half touchdowns was the undoing of Memorial.  Memorial opened the third quarter with a 7 play 69 yard drive to increase their lead to 20-10.  That’s when Westfield (1-0) netted three consecutive TD drives which started at the 8:07 mark in the quarter and ended at the 10:54 period of the fourth quarter, which included three one yard quarterback sneaks by Bridges.  The Mustangs final score came on Anthony Smith’s one yard run.
We have the best coaches in the world; we worked hard, ran this summer, and it showed up on the field.  We work out at 6:00am in the morning”, said Justin Johnson, Westfield’s tackle, which was aided by the entire offensive.”
Defensive lineman Anthony Smith rejuvenated the defensive with a couple key tackles behind the line of scrimmage which seemed to fall in place with other faucets of the Mustangs attack.
For Memorial (1-1), three turnovers, mistakes and in completed passed took its toll at crucial times.
“It’s not much to say, we showed up, they showed up and kicked our butts”, Memorial coach Gary Koch
Early in the first quarter, trailing by seven points, Memorial shook off a slow start to score two touchdowns after a 6 play 75 yard drive that resulted in a bizarre touchdown.  Boomer was on the receiving end of a 42 yard pass in which he fumbled at the five yard line.  Teammate Brock Davidson picked up the loose ball and raced into the end zone, tying the game at seven after Patrick Christie’s extra point.
“We came out fired up; we’re excited to play these guys every year”, said Boomer White, Memorial tailback.  They put up a battle and we put up a battle.  Defense held them to ten in the first half, offense made some mistakes.”
Behind a huge offensive line, Westfield’s first score covered 77 yards in 11 plays which watched Emmitt Raleigh break through the right of the line and outrun Memorial defenders to the end zone to close out a 26 yard TD.
Westfield piled up 390 total yards with 16 first downs against Memorial’s 219 and 11 first downs.  Kaylon Jackson led the Mustangs in rushing with 195 yards on 27 attempts while backfield mate Emmitt Raleigh chipped in 106 on 17 carries and one TD.  Boomer White picked up 81 yards on 18 carries and two scores.
“I’m proud of our kids; we were sitting down last week watching people”, said Corby Meekins.  It’s nice to get out here and get the season started.  They gave great effort tonight.”
