Team effort helps Stafford secure region III title

Humble – Two relay wins helped power the Stafford Boys Track & Field team to a title in the Class-3A Region III Finals Saturday night at Turner Stadium.
Now state bound, the Spartans will carry five races to Austin in hopes of bringing home the crown.
Victorious in the 4×100 and 4×200 Meter Relays, gave the Tigers 40 of its team high 73 points.  Charles Anumnu who anchored both winning relays, won the 200 Meter Dash (21.47).  Twin brother Carlton silvered in the 100 Meter Dash (10.74).  Easy Anyama took gold in the 110 Hurdles.
“I don’t like crossing the finish line behind anybody,” said Charles Anumnu.   Coming in second place is an embarrass to me and I don’t like it.  It hurts if I come in second in practice.  So I push hard and I have goals.  So I have to practice, hit it hard.  The days that I don’t want to practice,  that’s the most important day to practice the hardest with the coach and the rest of the team.
“I’m also a twin (Brother Carlton silvered in the 100 Meter).  My parents can’t pay for two kids to go to college.”
The UIL points system for track and field, allows runners who place first through sixth to qualify for points, with first place earning ten, (second) eight, (third) six, (fourth) four, (fifth) two and (sixth) one.

In four attempts, Waco Connally Lady Cadets claimed its fourth straight title.
Using a team effort to accumulate points, Connally consistency placed within the point system build 80 points, four more than Giddings 76.
Much can be said about the five event performance that Connally’s Paula Smith put on at the Class 3A Region III Track and Field Finals at Turner Stadium Saturday evening.
Not even Wheaties are worthy to behind the success of Smith’s stellar day.  She won the 400 Meter Dash (57.24), took gold in the long jump, was second in the high jump (5-04.00) and anchored two relays to a second and third place finish.  Though everything wasn’t gold, but consistently placing first, second or third is what ultimately watched the Lady Cadets walk away with its fourth consecutive championship.
Other Cadets’ who helped in its team effort included, Khalaya Williams finished first in the triple jump (38-09.75) and placed sixth in the long jump.  Talea Turner placed fourth in the 800 Meter Run (2:28.16).  Dorishia Barnes took fourth in the 300 Hurdles (46.49).  The Cadets defeated arch rival Waco La Vega for the 4×400 Meter Relay title (3:56.37) and finished third in the 4×100 Meter Relay (48.94) .  Bronasha Miles finished sixth in the shot put (35-04.50).
Connally’s Coach Lisa Baucon said, “Well for this group of seniors, it’s their fourth regional title.  It came down to the mile relay they certainly wanted it because they came out and ran a great race.  It’s been a great season for them.  Today we won the long jump, triple jump and got second in the high jump.  We really worked hard on our jumping and it really paid off in the points Lisa Baucon
