Memorial avenge last season’s lost, The Woodlands softball team move on to state
Klein Oak goes from not making the playoffs a year ago to playing for a chance to advance to state. Panthers advanced to the Class 5A Region II Finals after sweeping Dallas Jesuit 10-6, 10-9. Co-District Champ and rival, Klein gain a berth in the Region Finals for the second straight year by way of sweeping Garland Rowlett 4-3, 8-4. The Bearkats and Klein Oak shared the district title with identical 11-3 records. The two will meet for a chance to advance to Round Rock next weekend.
Brazoswood took out Lamar 5-3, 8-2 in two straight games in one Region III Semifinals to setup a rematch with Memorial. Last year the Bucs lost a heart breaking decisive game three in the regional semis to the Mustangs.
Memorial out lasted Clements in one of the most memorable three game series that eyes have witnessed. Each game was won by one run. The Mustangs led game one 6-2, before Blake Johnson hit a grand slam to tie the game at 6, helping the Rangers take a 1-0 lead. Fireworks exploded in game two as both teams combined for 33 runs, 34 hits, 17 for extra bases and five home runs in a 17-16 Mustangs victory. In game three Ben Carl did it with his pitching and hitting. His 2-run single was enough as Wayne Taylor came on in relief to shut the door on the Rangers 4-3.
When talking to coach York about the four marathon win over Clements, this was his thoughts. “I thought it would be a pretty quick fast played game, it’s just two good teams playing. I have to tip my hat to coach De La Santos and the Clements Rangers, they just never give up. They were down eight but never gave up. That’s the sign of a good team and baseballs’ a funny game.”
In Class 4A Region III, Brenham came up with a game high 18 runs in game three to drop Santa Fe 18-7 and move on to the Regional Finals where they will face Magnolia, who swept Friendswood 7-6, 5-1.
In softball news, it took the state bound Woodlands (42-1) three games to dispose of Tomball in Class 5A Region II Finals. The Cougars (34-6) did something that no other team was able to do and that was put a blemish on the Highlanders record, a 9-8 setback in Game two of the best-of-three series. The Woodlands ranked No. 1 in the nation will be making its first trip to state. They won game one 5-3 before falling 9-8 in game two and advanced to the state tournament with a 9-7 victory in game three. 41 consecutive wins is what the Highlanders were able to do so far this season, pretty amazing, not many can contest to that.
In Region III, Pearland will join the Highlanders after putting the broom to Dobie 2-1, 3-1.
Santa Fe out slugged Montgomery 11-10 in the deciding game three of the best-of-three series in Class 4A Region III to gain their first berth in the state tournament set for next weekend.
Woodlands Softball team stays perfect; improves to 34-0 on the season
The Region III Track and Field Meet will kick off Monday and concludes on Tuesday with the top two finishers moving on to the UIL State Track and Field Finals on May 13th and 14th at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
Although, North Shore Boys Track and Field team lost a load of seniors to graduation last season, including all everything DeAndrew White. But the Mustangs look poised for another run at the Region III title with the help coming from stand out talents in Jermaine Authorlee and Jaylon Hicks. Cameron Burrell and Clyde Lee lead a talent group of Hurricanes who could compete for the team title as well.
Also keep a watchful on some of the area’s top individual performers from last years Regional and State meet which includes Dulles’s Sheriod Evans who won the 100 Meter Dash and the 200 Meter Dash as a junior. Hightower’s Cameron Burrell, Clyde Lee and North Shore’s Authorlee and Hicks are favorites.
Look for Oak Ridge’s Dalton Rowan to defend his title in the discus, who won state last season with a toss of 177 feet, two inches.
In Girls Class 5A action, Elkin’s Taylor Houston won the 200 Meter Dash at state a year ago as a junior. Westfield’s India Daniels claimed the 100 Meter Dash as a sophomore and also has a victory over Houston in the 200 Meter Dash this year at the Victor Lopez Classic.
.
As the Bi-District round of Softball Playoffs completed teams will more than likely see stiffer competition in the Area Round of the playoffs.
In Class 5A Region II Klein Collins, Kingwood, The Woodlands and Tomball all advanced to the Area Round of the playoffs with wins. Collins, The Woodlands and Tomball moved on by way of sweeps and Kingwood blanked Klein Oak in a one game series. Thinks should really heat in Area Round when Collins takes on Round Rock, Kingwood will face Austin High, The Woodlands vs. Pflugerville and Tomball will meet Austin Bowie and from the Austin.
Region III looks to be loaded with some of the usual suspects, Alvin, Bellaire, and Pearland among others area powers.
On a high note, according to ESPN Rise and MaxPreps, the Woodlands are the nation’s No. 1 ranked team and also sit at the top of the state polls. Also Woodlands Coach Jorgensen has been nominated as the national female team coach of the year by MaxPreps.
The baseball playoffs get under way this week with some great match ups as well as some rematches.
Clements and the Woodlands are ranked 7th and 8th in the nation according to Rivals 100. The 2010 Region III Champ Rangers are favored to win the Region III title this season but it want be easy with a host of teams that could challenge for the title. The Highlanders will head north to Region II where they could face stellar competition.

Wursteisen’s single sends
Panthers to celebration
Sam Wursteisen’s single in the bottom of 7th inning drove in Tiffany Perez to give St. Pius X a 7-6 victory over the Waltrip Rams Wednesday night at Lady Panthers Field on the St. Pius X Campus.
It didn’t look good for baseball or any other outdoor sport as the rain fell periodically but not enough to stop play.
The Rams put a four spot on the scoreboard in the first inning. Nancy Osornio scored from third on a wild pitch that got pass the Panther’s Catcher Carah Nunez. Kennedy Rodriguez fielder’s choice brought home Megan Russell while Raven Rodriguez and Ashlee Cantu came home on Tiffany Bender’s single giving Waltrip the early lead.
“I was thinking we have to get the out, we have to bare down right here. I’ve got to throw these pitches; I’ve got to get these girls out and I worked my hardest, said St. Pius X Pitcher Lindsey Quartaro.
After two scoreless innings the Panthers battled back. Adrianne Rocha started the rally with a walk and one out. Then Ashley Garcia’s RBI double gave St. Pius its first run of the game. Nunez’s triple down the left field line scoring Garcia. Then the Panthers were awarded two walks, Jourdan Alvarez was hit by a pitch, stole second and Perez made it to first on four balls. With two down Waltrip had a chance to get out of the inning when Taylor Suarez hit a scribbler to second but the throw to first was low and to the left allowing two runners to score, that tied the game at 4.
In the top of the fourth the Rams sent six batters to the plate. A walk, a double and a single produce the go ahead runs for Waltrip. With two runners in scoring position Ashley Herrera’s RBI single scored Russell and Raven Rodriguez, putting the Rams up 6-4.
The Panthers answered again. Alvarez’s double drew St. Pius even with the Rams at 6 in the bottom of the fourth inning. The game would stay that way until the bottom of the seventh.
Perez got aboard with a leadoff triple setting up the game winning single.
Wursteisen who pitched first 3 innings moved to short stop as she gave way to winning pitcher, Lindsey Quartara.
It all started when Alexis Joseph lead off with a triple to left, Jessica Savage grounded out to first. Amber Anderson singled to center bringing home Joseph for the first run of the inning. Vanessa Eng doubled to left scoring Amber all the way from first taking a 20 lead. Kelsey Nichols doubled to left leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd. The third run of the inning came when Meghan Gomez singled in a run. The Bucs lone run came in the 6th inning.

How tough is it when you face your district rival four times in one season. Thats what these two teams had to do.

In game two it took the yellow jackets nine innings to dispose the Bucs, a 10 win for the yellow jackets. It was a pitchers dual between Alvins Amber Anderson and Brazoswoods Lana Jo Hairston. On a night when offense was kept at bay until Britini Wells single score Vanessa Eng for the Alvins victory.

The yellow Jackets will be making their first state appearance, where they will take on Odessa at McCombs Softball field Friday evening in Austin .

What a year for the Lady Yellow Jackets making it to Austin for a chance to win a State Title. The Lady Yellow Jackets are very happy after finishing 4th in their district and winning the regional III championship.

Alvin got things started early on taking a 3-0 lead and went on to a 7 -1 victory in game one of
the best of 3 series. It all started when Alexis Joseph lead off with a triple to left, Jessica Savage
grounded out to first. Amber Anderson singled to center bringing home Joseph for the first run of
the inning. Vanessa Eng doubled to left scoring Amber all the way from first taking a 2-0 lead.
Kelsey Nichols doubled to left leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd. The third run of the inning came
when Meghan Gomez singled in a run. The Bucs lone run came in the 6th inning
How tough is it when you face your district rival four times in one season. That’s what these two
teams had to do.
In game two it took the yellow jackets nine innings to dispose the Bucs, a 1-0 win for the yellow
jackets. It was a pitchers dual between Alvin’s Amber Anderson and Brazoswood’s Lana Jo
Hairston. On a night when offense was kept at bay until Britini Wells RBI single score Vanessa
Eng for the Alvin’s victory.
The yellow Jackets will be making their first state appearance, where they will take on Odessa at
McCombs Softball field Friday evening in Austin.
What a year for the Lady Yellow Jackets making it to Austin for a chance to win a State Title. The
Lady Yellow Jackets are very happy after finishing 4th in their district and winning the regional III
championship.
