Achieving a state title was sufficient to realize a team’s aspirations. However, as high school athletics have evolved, the quest for excellence now extends beyond state borders to pursue national recognition.

Every year, numerous high school football teams, both nationally and state-ranked, embark on journeys to measure their programs against the nation’s best. While it is impossible for any school to face every dominant team, this approach provides a foundation for national rankings and can determine the season’s outcome.

Historically, factors such as athletes’ performance, strength of schedule, winning percentages, and tradition were used to identify the champion of high school football. Nevertheless, matchups between states have simplified the process of crowning a national champion.

Several of the top-10 teams are set to face significant competition, which may affect their standing in the national rankings. Among these teams is No. 1 IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL), which is scheduled to compete against Lone Peak (Utah), St. Louis (Hawaii), and St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, Maryland). No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) will face a challenging schedule that could prove pivotal for their season. A demanding six-week period may determine the success or failure of the Gaels’ campaign. This schedule features matchups against St. John Bosco (CA), Columbus (FL), Lone Peak (Utah), Mater Dei (CA), and Faith Lutheran (LV).

Mia and her twin sister, Mariah Maxwell, beamed with joy after completing the 100-meters, achieving two of the fastest times in the nation this season.

The soft-spoken twins participated in the Invite Men’s 100-meters / Mixed Gender 100-meters, which featured four men in the six-tandem event. As expected, the men finished ahead of the twins, but improving as the season progresses is the goal for the twins.

Although the conclusion did not reach Mia’s top time of 11.04, Mariah recorded the second-best time in Texas history, 11.16. Her previous best was 11.28. Mia achieved a time of 11.18.

“It means a lot. It’s my season opener”, said Mariah of APXP. A big PR from 11.2 to 11.1. It’s crazy. It makes me excited for the season. It’s really fun coming out here competing against these boys, giving everyone a show (speaking of the four guys who competed in the 100 Meter dash)

Despite not matching Mia’s top time of 11.04 seconds, Mariah ran 11.16 seconds, the second-fastest in Texas history. Her previous personal best was 11.28 seconds, while Mia finished with a time of 11.18 seconds.

The annual event saw participation from 40 colleges, high schools, middle schools, and unattached athletes, showcasing a diverse range of talent and competition.

The Maxwell twins were not the only highlights, as Texas Southern men’s and women’s teams showcased its strength, securing multiple top-three finishes.

Competing away from home proved advantageous for the Tigers, who began its outdoor season at Turner Stadium during the 74th TSU Relays, necessitated by the resurfacing of Dudley Stadium at Texas Southern University.

Texas Southern took matters into its own hands, keeping itself in contention in most events.

Texas Southern’s Alyvia Brown had an impressive evening, securing victories in both the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.56 and the 1,500-meter run, 4:45.68. She achieved a commendable second-place finish in the triple jump, recording a distance of 36-11. The Tigers followed up with two other finishers, including Katherine Canchola, who also performed well, finishing second in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:05.82 and second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:34.19. Stacy Guerrero trailed closely behind, taking third in the 5,000-meter with a time of 19:39.29.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Desirae Roberts and Tyler Moore finished first and second, clocking 1:05.04 and 1:10.71, respectively. Its convincing performance contributed significantly to the team’s overall success during the event.

Kennedy Haynes excelled in the discus throw, winning with a distance of 126-8, while also earning a bronze medal in the shot put with a throw of 36-9. Bria Lawson and Mikayla Ball followed closely behind in the discus, finishing second and third with throws of 118-6 and 118-3, respectively. Ball later added to her achievements by winning gold in the hammer throw with a mark of 134-8.

Other victors comprised Calle Fisher, who achieved victory in the Long Jump with a distance of 17-1.5 feet. Destinee Payne secured the second position with a jump of 16-11.5. Ryann Richards also attained a second-place finish in the pole vault, clearing a height of 6-6.25.

The Tiger men’s track and field team demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving nine first-place finishes. Jalen Walker excelled in both the Hammer Throw and Shot Put, recording distances of 187-5. Ahmad Muhammad triumphed in the Triple Jump with a leap of 47-8.

Additional winners included Joshua Brown in the 100-meter with a time of 10.43, Michael Strange Jr. in the 400-meters with a time of 48.09, Manual Garza, who was a double winner in the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:14.87 and the 5,000-meters with a time of 16:09.10, Te’Drick Robinson took the 110-meter Hurdles with a time of 14.66, Tyler Johnson in the High Jump with a height of 6-6, and Xavier Bellard won the long jump with a distance of 22-2.5.

“It feels good to knock the rust off”, Tigers 110-meter Hurdler Te’Drick Robbinson elaborated. “We had a pretty long break. We had a little wind out here today. But it was good to go one, two, speaking of teammate, Donyea Jarmon, who finished second in a time of 14.73.

“It was hard getting loose after the long break”, Jarmon said. “We’ve been working hard at practice.”

Harvard University’s men’s and women’s track teams excelled in the 4×100-meter relays, finishing first with impressive times of 39.72 and 44.42 seconds, respectively.

“Going into this meet, we know we have some strong guys in the run. Our angle leg, he’s been running good. He did well indoors. Timmy just ran a school record, and Jonus has run the same time. We have high expectations for ourselves, and we are constantly pushing for something more.

“I’m new to the mix”, Amari Turner Crimson’s 4th leg on the 4×100-meter Relay spoke. “We are working on continuity, getting timing, handoffs, and rhythm down. We change up the lineup to stay consistent and try to get a national or regional qualifying mark. We came out and did pretty good.”

“Spring break brings us here, and many alumni are willing to host us”, Crimson’s first leg of the 4×100-meter Relay, LeRoy Horton explained. We are thankful for that and the warm weather; we are stuck in the cold weather up in Boston. This is nice warm weather to practice in. We’ve been working here for a week. We leave here tonight

“It means great, it’s just the beginning”, says Saige Forbes. I’m a senior on this team, these are our younger members, and they really pushed us every day to come out and do the best we can, and we pushed each other.” Mfoniso Andrew, who grew up in Missouri City, where she attended Elkins High School.

“I’m from Texas, Mfoniso Andrew, Harvard’s 4×100-meter Relay first leg.” “I definitely know what this stadium means. A lot of fast times are run on this track.”

Several high school athletes celebrated outstanding finishes, particularly Worthing’s remarkable Avonte Earl, who won both the 110-meter Hurdles with a time of 13.52 seconds and the 300-meter Hurdles with a time of 37.67 seconds. Harold Clewis from Churchill Fulshear also excelled, winning the 400-meters in 48.51 seconds.

West Fork’s Jailen Jones won a head-to-head battle in the 100-meter Dash against Keaton Bookman of Churchill Fulshear with times of 10.33 and 10.34.

“I’m not satisfied with my time”, Jones explained. “I believe I can always do more and better. I felt loose when he said set (referring to the starter). I relaxed, took a deep breath, and ran.”

Summer Creek’s Brook Lloyd and Phoenix Phillips both claimed first place in their respective events. Lloyd excelled in the girls’ 400-meters with a time of 52.84 seconds, while Phillips finished first in his event with a time of 14.03 seconds.

In middle school competitions, West Lake from Atascocita, Texas, set a record in the Boys 4×200-meter Relay, posting a time of 1:35.69, which elevated the team to second nationally. The Irons Junior High Boys from Conroe, Texas, finished first in the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 44.80 seconds.

“We are trying to improve our time in every race, West Lake Middle School first leg of the 4×100-meter Relay team, Niles Stoneham explained. “Our best time is 44.24 in the 4×100-meter relay”, said Adaris Baldwin, who runs the third leg on the 4×100-meter relay. We’ve run better than this before. “I think we could have done better on the exchange of the last leg. The fourth leg took off too fast, which obviously took off a little time. I feel honored to be here. A lot of colleges and high schools are here. U of H is one of my favorite colleges.”

M.D. Jones Middle School girls took part in two 4×100 and two 4×200-meter relays, clinching first and second place in times of (54.04) and (54.42), along with (1:53.29) and (1:54.93), respectively.

Houston ISD Yates High School Boys Basketball Coach Greg Wise celebrates his one thousandth victory at Burnet Field House, overwhelming Kashmere, 92-55.

Following a two-year hiatus during which he observed his son Nick Wise compete in college basketball, Wise has been an integral part of the Yates Lions community since 2008. He led the Lions to secure two championships and a national title in 2010.

Esteemed as one of the leading coaches in the Houston area and across the state, Wise is committed to his defensive approach, which focuses on stifling offenses through a pressing and trapping style which aims to force turnovers that lead to points.

This year’s team is looking to extend its playoff journey after last season’s regional finals loss to Wheatley, 90-84.

North Shore recalled its 2023 showdown with the Panthers. Duncanville overpowered the Mustangs, 49-33, that year in what has become an annual rivalry. Most of the current players were not on the roster that season.

Maintaining its advantage, the Mustangs held on to defeat Duncanville, 10-7, in the UIL Class 6A Division I Finals on Saturday evening at AT&T Stadium.

Following the victory, North Shore (14-2) leads the series of state championship meetings, 4-2.

After a scoreless first half, the momentum shifted as senior quarterback Kaleb Maryland threw a 44-yard touchdown to Jaylen Bocard, putting the Mustangs ahead. Kicker Daniel Cruz then drilled a 27-yard field goal with 9:53 left in the fourth quarter, extending North Shore’s lead to 10-0.

Earlier, with 4:12 left in the third quarter, Maryland orchestrated a breathtaking six-play, 72-yard drive, capped by a picturesque scoring pass to a streaking Bocard. The touchdown sent North Shore fans into a frenzy as it seized a 7-0 lead, following Cruz’s extra point kick.

Maryland, floored during the play, did not immediately see the touchdown. When he saw Bocard celebrating in the end zone, excitement took over, marking a turning point for both teams and its supporters.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Panthers forced a punt. They marched 70 yards with the help of it’s running game and timely passes. Trenton Yancey spotted Zac Turner for a daring 32-yard touchdown, energizing the Panthers. This trimmed the deficit to 10-7 with 5:00 left. But that was as close as they got.

Quarterback J’Coryon Rivers led the drive much like Maryland did. He executed the Panthers’ offense, handed the ball off, and passed to Turner and Yancey. The drive penetrated deep into North Shore’s territory.  

“I’m excited for them, and I don’t take it for granted.” Mustangs coach Willie Gaston explained.

The Mustangs forced a punt and took over at its 42-yard line with 3:07 left in the third quarter. Maryland led a balanced attack, alternating runs and passes, advancing to the Duncanville 9. A holding penalty pushed them back to the 19, but Cruz connected on a 27-yard field goal. This expanded the lead to 10-7. 

Despite staring at a 10-0 deficit late in the game, Duncanville (12-2) refused to give up.

The comeback chance arose as Duncanville drove to the Mustangs’ 26, but the drive stalled on Rivers’ incomplete fourth-down pass and North Shore erupted in celebration.

Both defenses dominated. Still, Maryland threw for 154 yards. Receiver Jaylen Bocard caught four passes for 79 yards and earned the offensive MVP honor.

“Coach Cross puts these kids in good positions to make plays,” Gaston said. “It’s just unbelievable. I’m just proud of our whole defensive staff.”

Fans saw a tense first-half defensive duel. Neither offense found its rhythm. Duncanville reached North Shore’s 16, but the drive ended when Guillory, who racked up ten tackles, intercepted River

North Shore’s defense dominated the night. They forced two turnovers, recorded two sacks, and held the Panthers to 97 first-half yards. This set an impenetrable tone and fueled its state title dreams. Defensive MVP Tony Guillory and defensive end Za’Qwaun Nunn led the defense.

Meanwhile, Coach Willie Gaston picks up his first state win and adds to the school’s collection of five titles (2003, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021).

A season that began with a twist saw the Mustangs fall to South Oak Cliff, 41-31, who defeated Randle, 35-19, for the 5A Division II crown in the first game, and ended with a loss to district rival Summer Creek, 28-0. That loss changed playoff expectations as many doubted the Mustangs’ invincibility.

The players remembered the atmosphere of last season’s ending. The air was moderate and flowing with good vibrations. However, the breeze seemed flat.

The Lions rarely faced such moments. South Oak Cliff’s 35-19 win snapped the Lions’ 31-game streak on Saturday in the Class 5A Division II Finals at AT&T Stadium.

The loss snapped the Lions’ 31-game win streak. Most of all, it took away the opportunity to secure its second consecutive title.

Randle (15-1) had no answer for the Bears’ balanced attack. Stopping one area from leaking, watched another spurt. In addition, the Lions struggled to sustain drives against South Oak Cliff’s dominant defense.

Despite the Bears having several players to thank for earning the win, linebacker Jamarion Phillips picked up the defensive MVP while leading the defense with 13 tackles and one interception.

Incredibly, the Bears have competed in five consecutive finals—winning three titles. South Oak Cliff built a 14-0 lead before Lion’s Landen Williams-Callis electrified the crowd with a 100-yard kickoff return. Raul Vega’s extra point kick made it 14-7.

Randle added three scores, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Bears, who had an answer for every Lions threat.

The game ended with emotional highs and lows for both teams.

For South Oak Cliff (15-1), revenge settled in its favor as the Bears celebrated after falling to Randle last season. With the victory, the Bears snagged its third title in the school’s history. Its season loss came at the hands of rival Duncanville, 35-28.

Running back Mikail Trotter, who took offensive MVP, led the Bears’ charge, rushing for 143 yards on 11 carries and three touchdowns. Quarterback Jayden Williams connected on 12-of-13 for 89 yards and one touchdown.

It is not uncommon to witness a pair of teams from District 11-6A and 23-6A progress to the finals.

C.E. King and North Shore are contending in District 23-6A along with Atascocita, Beaumont Westbrook, Beaumont United, Humble, Kingwood, and Summer Creek to establish one of the strongest districts in the state.

The Panthers (13-2) leveraged its dynamic offense to eliminate last season’s Class 6A Division II champion, Vandergrift, by a score of 58-41, while North Shore (13-2) exhibited a remarkable defensive performance to defeat the previously undefeated Lake Travis, 28-6. Following its absence from the championship round last year, the Mustangs will face its well-known rival, Duncanville, in the Class 6A Division I final on Saturday at 3pm at AT&T Stadium.

C.E. King and Summer Creek clashed in district play (42-28) prior to its recent face-off in the regional finals (24-21). Atascocita suffered a defeat in a high-scoring battle against the up-and-coming Dickinson Gators, 51-47, who ultimately lost to North Shore in the regional finals, 46-23.

In a matchup with numerous similarities, DeSoto and Duncanville face significant district opponents, including Cedar Hill, the Mesquite schools, Lancaster, Skyline, and Waxahachie. The Eagles maneuvered through challenging situations after contending with North Crowley, the previous season’s 6A Division I champion; College Park; Longview; Willis; and Creekside of Fairburn, a consistent powerhouse in Georgia, which won the Georgia Class 4A title on Monday evening.

In an unexpected twist, the Eagles triumphed over top-ranked Southlake Carroll in a thrilling contest, 57-44. One ranking system, Massey Ratings, positioned the Dragons as the premier team in the nation.

DeSoto does not perceive this as an upset, having gained from a rigorous schedule. A true storybook of iron sharpens iron. Despite suffering three losses, the Eagles appreciate the preparation it have undergone.

Although not as tumultuous as DeSoto’s schedule, Duncanville faced a challenging path, dropping a decision to a good Waxahachie team, but rebounded to win 11 consecutive games, including a decisive 31-9 victory over Allen in the semifinals.

Appropriately, the four teams will converge in the finals to determine who will claim bragging rights in a contest between Dallas and Houston.

Aldine – When discussing high school football within the largest classification (6A) in South Texas, North Shore is a prominent name. The Jautternaunt has established a record that is unparalleled among teams in Southeast Texas. Since 2015, the Mustangs have reached the state finals on seven occasions, securing championships in 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2021.

A defense that has garnered admiration from its supporters, as it stifled Austin Lake Travis with a score of 28-6, while senior quarterback Kaleb Maryland achieved three touchdowns on Saturday evening during the UIL Class 6A Division I Semifinals at W.W. Thorne Stadium.

“Our defense played great,” stated Mustangs coach Willie Gaston. “Dominating a great offensive team was special.”

With the victory, the Mustangs (13-2) will face Duncanville, who defeated Allen, 31-7, for the sixth time at AT&T Stadium on Saturday at 3pm.

Defensive end Za’Qwaun Nunn spearheaded the defense with three sacks, bringing his season total to 20. Kobe Charles, Jayden Curry, and Lynell Hunter, who collectively restricted the undefeated Cavaliers to a mere 47 total yards and forced two turnovers, added support.

It was a challenging day for quarterback Luke McBride and Lake Travis (14-1), who struggled throughout the evening against a defense that stifled the run game and a secondary that limited the Cavaliers to just three completions.

Lake Travis hoped its average of 409.6 points per game would assist them, but the day turned into a catastrophe.

Maryland emerged as the key player on offense, achieving three rushing touchdowns. He shrugged off a significant blow during his four-yard touchdown run, providing North Shore (13-2) with all the scoring it required, leading 7-3 with 6:24 left in the second quarter following Daniel Cruz’s successful bonus kick.

“It’s rewarding,” Maryland spoke. Working hard to get back to state.

Maryland’s scrambling ability created problems for the Cavalier defense, which concedes an average of 12.3 points per game.

Kicker Braydon Doane put Lake Travis (14-1) on the scoreboard first with a 42-yard field goal with 11:52 left in the second quarter. He later added a 35-yard field goal with 8:35 remaining.

Omari Demerson forced a fumble by striking quarterback Luke McBride during his throwing motion. Dezmon Christian recovered the ball at the Cavaliers’ one-yard line. This led to Maryland’s second touchdown, extending North Shore’s lead to 13-3.

Late in the second quarter, Maryland found an opening and raced 44 yards to the end zone, contributing to the Mustangs’ 20-3 lead.

Lake Travis struggled to find its rhythm as the game spiraled out of control when running back Kaden Brandley crossed the goal line on a three-yard run, extending the Mustangs’ deficit to 28-6.

“They found a way to win tonight,” says Klein Collins’ Adrian Mitchell. “They found a way to make plays, offensively, defensively, and on special teams.”

Representing the path to 15-6A district championship could not have showcased a stronger performance on a night overflowing with huge plays.

Senior quarterback Braydon Schoggin threw a ten-yard touchdown pass to receiver TyDrick Finley with 29 seconds left, sealing a 45-42 win for Klein Collins against Magnolia in a pivotal district matchup at Klein Memorial Stadium on Thursday night.

Schoggin delivered a lateral pass to Finley, who drew tight coverage, but with some clever moves, the speedy receiver managed to evade three defenders and sprinted into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. Finley also caught a two-point conversion, boosting the Tigers’ lead to 45-42.

“I started seeing red,” Finley explained. “If the ball is there, I’m going to get it.” The old saying is that defense wins championships. Our offense fed off the momentum of this seesaw affair.”

However, the contest used every second of the clock before the dust settled. The undefeated Bulldogs used its time effectively, advancing into field-goal range, where kicker Gavin Gonzales’ 51-yard attempt veered wide left as time expired.

Junior quarterback Chase Lowery launched an incomplete pass, and Tigers’ cornerback Christian Wilkerson broke up another throw, leading to a fourth and three. But, a pass interference penalty against the Tigers’ defensive back Makell Wilson granted Magnolia a first down at the Klein Collins’ 34-yard line with just one second left.

Despite Klein Collins (7-1, 5-1) trailing, 42-24 with 11:22 left in the fourth quarter following Lowery’s connection with senior receiver Jayden Cooper on a stunning 85-yard fly route, it battled back with consecutive scoring drives, aided by Wilson’s interception at the Magnolia’s 36-yard line with 8:40 to go.

“The fight of our kids is unreal, said coach Adrian Mitchell. “Many times the kids respond to the way our coaches respond, and our coaches responded the right way on both sides of the ball.”

The brief drive consisted of eight plays as Schoggin powered his way into the end zone from the one-yard line, reducing the deficit to 42-37 following Samual Galeas’ extra point kick with 4:41 remaining.

Schoggin accumulated 131 rushing yards and passed for 292 yards. Aiyden Benford recorded four receptions for 134 yards, while Adrian Jenkins had five catches totaling 113 yards.

Klein Collins failed to recover an onside kick, allowing Lowery to orchestrate a five-play series that helped the Bulldogs reach the 25-yard line, where it faced fourth-and-two. Magnolia’s head coach, Craig Martin, called a timeout. When play resumed, instead of attempting a field goal, Lowery came up a yard shy of the mark to gain, which forced a turnover on downs with 1:55 remaining in the game.

Schoggin directed the offense on a 77-yard drive. A pass interference penalty, along with Schoggin’s 27-yard throw to receiver Aiyden Benford at Magnolia’s 18-yard line, energized the home crowd. However, the Tigers encountered a setback, marking one of six false start penalties throughout the evening, with one occurring on each of its initial three possessions. Following an incompletion with one minute remaining, Schoggin successfully connected with receiver Adrian Jenkins at the ten-yard line just before Finley’s fireworks.

Magnolia (6-1, 4-1) led 21-17 at intermission and extended its lead in the third quarter.

Klein Collins encountered another false start while facing fourth and one as the offense gave way to the punting team.

Lowery, who completed 20-for-28 with 330 passing yards and added 153 rushing yards on 11 attempts, served as a constant challenge for the Tigers’ defense. He made crucial throws and impressed the crowd with his agility.

Following four straight completions, Lowery gained 25 yards, progressing the ball to the Tigers’ 35-yard line. In a similar situation to Klein Collins, the Bulldogs faced a fourth down and inches, but junior running back Cash Ferrell powered through to the 23-yard line and scored on the subsequent play. Magnolia led 28-17 after Gonzales’ successful extra point kick.

Magnolia’s senior receiver Joseph Solomon had eight targets, resulting in 152 yards. Cooper finished the game with five receptions totaling 126 yards.

Then, both teams exchanged 75-yard scoring drives to conclude the third quarter, with the Bulldogs leading 35-24.

In the first quarter, both teams punted after its opening possessions. Then, Lowery orchestrated a 70-yard drive, finishing it with a 35-yard scoring run, giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 advantage with 6:35 remaining.

Klein Collins responded by advancing 74 yards in seven plays. Schoggin, who performed admirably like Lowery, discovered a gap in the Bulldogs’ defense and gained 31 yards to reach Magnolia’s 39-yard line. As the pace of the game resembles that of a NASCAR race, Spring is a crucial time for athletes to maintain a competitive edge and continue honing their abilities.

Coaches have increasingly turned to the Spring events as a pivotal opportunity to enhance a team’s visibility during the regular season. Since the introduction of 7-on-7 football to Texas high schoolers in 1998, numerous players have moved on to play at the collegiate level and in the NFL. This preparation significantly alleviates the workload for the coaching staff, enabling them to dedicate more time to special teams and other critical aspects of the team.

It’s one of the state’s most competitive districts. Fans will witness its four playoff teams competing in the Region III finals, with Kingwood facing off against No. 7 Summer Creek in Division II. At the same time, No. 5 Atascocita takes on No. 2 North Shore in Division I. These matchups highlight the intensity and skill presented within this district, known for its formidable teams.

District 23-6A has a reputation for producing teams that excel in the playoffs, as evidenced by last season’s performances. Summer Creek and North Shore made significant strides, reaching the state finals in its respective divisions. The Lobos will play last season’s Class 6A Division II champion, No. 6 DeSoto, which secured its place by defeating Willis with a score of 55-35.
