Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, and Texas have successfully progressed to establish the inaugural 12-team college football playoff final four. The victors of this round will move forward to vie for the national championship in college football. Each of these institutions is historically recognized as one of the premier college football programs in the nation.

A shared characteristic among all four teams is their defensive prowess. The Fighting Irish demonstrated remarkable strength by limiting its playoff adversaries to 27 points. Similarly, Penn State has showcased its defensive capabilities, restricting its two opponents to 24 points, a significant achievement considering they faced future first-round draft pick running back Ashton Jeanty. The Nifty Lions successfully contained Jeanty, allowing him only 104 yards on 30 carries without permitting any touchdowns. Additionally, tight end Tyler Warren achieved a milestone by recording his 98th reception of the season, setting a new single-season record for Penn State, surpassing the previous 97 receptions held by Allen Robinson in 2013.

The matchup between the Buckeyes and Texas will likely attract significant attention, particularly due to the involvement of five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers. Ewers decided to forgo his senior year at Southlake Carroll High School to commence his collegiate journey at Ohio State, subsequently transferring to Texas before the 2022 season. At Ohio State, he backed up to C.J. Stroud, the former Buckeyes quarterback who currently plays for the Texans.

There won’t be a shortage of future NFL talent when the Buckeyes (12-2) and Texas (13-2) step on the turf at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Both teams possess potent offenses capable of lighting up the scoreboard. Nevertheless, the outcome may hinge on defensive performances, injuries, and turnovers. Ohio State aims to maintain its stronghold, having recently demonstrated its domination, 41-21, by avenging an earlier season loss against No. 1 Oregon.

Texas triumphed in a thrilling double overtime match against Arizona State, securing a 39-31 victory after defensive back Andrew Mukuba intercepted a pass from Sam Leavitt. Despite the Sun Devils’ huge comeback, overcoming a 16-point deficit, and witnessing Texas fail to convert two crucial field goal attempts in the closing moments of regulation, it came down to the game’s last play.

Coach Sarkisian acknowledged the strengths of the Wildcats, particularly emphasizing its formidable defensive capabilities, which he described as among one of the finest in the conference. This recognition highlights the importance of a strong defense in competitive play.

In the latter half of the game, spectators witnessed Kentucky’s defense successfully forcing two turnovers, one of which was returned for a touchdown, while the Longhorns (9-1, 5-1) regained possession of a pair of fumbles. This surge in defensive performance gave the Wildcats a renewed sense of hope, suggesting that it might be poised to shift the momentum in its favor.

However, the Wildcats’ offense struggled to find a solution against Texas’ defense, which currently ranks first in the nation for the fewest yards allowed, averaging just 249.0 per game. This defensive prowess enabled quarterback Quinn Ewers to exploit opportunities, connecting with tight end Gunner Helm for a second touchdown. It extended the lead to 21-7, and the game ultimately concluded with a score of 31-14 on Saturday at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

The Longhorns’ defense provided crucial support, enabling Ewers to execute a 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end Gunner Helm. It established a lead for Texas that it would maintain throughout the game.

The defensive unit, featuring standout performances from lineman Alfred Collins, cornerback Jahdae Barron, linebacker Anthony Hill, and Colin Simmons, was instrumental in the team’s success. While the offense faced challenges, the defense remained steadfast, achieving six sacks and limiting Kentucky to 21 rushing yards. This relentless pressure from the front line afforded the Longhorns’ secondary time to cover Kentucky’s receivers.

In addition to its defensive prowess, Quintervion Wisner and Jaydon Blue significantly contributed to the running game, each finding the end zone with a touchdown. Their efforts complemented the offensive strategy, further solidifying Texas’s commanding performance.

Ewers, who achieved a remarkable feat by throwing a touchdown in 22 consecutive games, completed 20 of 31 passes for a total of 191 yards and two touchdowns. Wisner contributed significantly with 26 carries, amassing 158 yards and scoring a touchdown, while Blue added 96 yards on 15 carries. Additionally, Matthew Golden, a key target, had seven receptions for 86 yards.

Despite its (4-7, 1-6) record, Kentucky demonstrated resilience and determination on the field, refusing to concede defeat. The team moved the ball on offense, and its defense disrupted several of the Longhorns’ drives. However, Texas regained its composure by executing an impressive 86-yard drive over 15 plays, which stunned the home crowd of 102,811. The one-yard touchdown run by Quintrevion Wisner allowed the Longhorns to establish a two-possession lead of 31-14.

The drive’s success rested on a solid running game, especially given the challenges faced by the passing game. Maintaining momentum through the ground game proved crucial in regaining control and solidifying Texas’s position as the game progressed.

Leading 24-7, the Longhorns initiated a drive in its territory. However, this possession was short-lived when Tre’vonne Rybka, a defensive lineman for the Wildcats, successfully stripped the ball from Blue. Kentucky’s defensive tackle, Deone Walker, recovered the fumble at the Longhorns’ 32-yard line.

Following the turnover, Kentucky’s quarterback, Cutter Boley, adeptly evaded pressure and delivered a precise pass to tight end Willie Rodriguez at the seven-yard line. Despite this promising start, the Texas defense responded immediately, forcing Kentucky to attempt a field goal that unfortunately veered off to the left.

In the subsequent Longhorn series, momentum faltered when junior running back Jarrick Gipson fumbled the ball on the opening play. Fortunately for Texas, a teammate recovered the loose ball. The following play proved pivotal for the Wildcats, as a defender disrupted the quarterback’s throwing motion, leading to an errant pass that was ruled a fumble. Linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson seized the opportunity, intercepting the ball mid-air and sprinting untouched to the end zone, narrowing the score to 24-14 after a successful extra point.

Following Blue’s fumble, Wisner took charge of Texas’ rushing attack, effectively gaining yards between the tackles and advancing the ball into Wildcat territory. Nevertheless, Kentucky’s defense tightened its grip, halting the drive after Bert Auburn’s field goal attempt veered wide right.

In the subsequent possession for the Wildcats, Texas again forced a punt. This time, receiver Silas Bolden misplayed the punt return after signaling for a fair catch at the 11-yard line. Remarkably, he recovered the ball after it touched the ground, falling on it to secure possession.

The focus remained on Texas’s defense, which held the Wildcats scoreless in the second half. The defensive line of Collins, Hill, Simmons, and Sorrells consistently pressured Boley, who showed his best under the circumstances by completing 10-of-18 passes for 160 yards and two interceptions. The Wildcats’ final chance evaporated when Texas cornerback Andrew Mukuba intercepted a pass at the four-yard line with 39 seconds remaining, igniting a jubilant celebration among the crowd and the Longhorns’ sideline.

Texas initiated the scoring, executing a 75-yard drive over eleven plays. Ewers scrambled to the left and delivered a precise pass to tight end Gunner Helm in the end zone. Following Auburn’s successful bonus kick, Texas established an early lead of 7-0 with 13:41 remaining in the first quarter.

The Kentucky offense struggled to find its rhythm, mainly due to the efforts of Simmon and Alfred, until Brock Vandagriff connected on a 32-yard pass to Ja’Mori Maclin. Shortly after, the Wildcats faced a critical fourth down and two from the four-yard line. In a moment of composure, Vandagriff evaded pressure and located Josh Kattus in the end zone, leveling the score at 7-7 after Alex Raynor’s extra point kick with 11:36 left in the second quarter.

Texas’ defense proved formidable, limiting the Wildcats to seven points for the remainder of the half.

Blue exploited the left side of the Wildcat’s defense and broke free for a six-yard touchdown run with 6:39 remaining in the second quarter as Texas reclaimed the lead, 14-7.

Next week, the Longhorns will travel to College Station to meet former Big 12 and Southwest Conference rival Texas A&M.

Oklahoma’s linebacker Ethan Downs sacked Quinn Ewers, who is recovering from an oblique injury, on the game’s opening play. Ewers threw an interception on the third play of the evening. That shed light on a Sooner team that has also been hampered by multiple injuries this season. The Sooners are without its first five starting receivers.

Oklahoma had a reason to believe it could walk away victorious after winning the last 11 out of the 15 meetings against the Longhorns.

A scheduling time change, which set the game time to 2:30 p.m. instead of its regular 11 a.m. start, had no bearing on the high-intensity Red River Rivalry. Both teams maintained its competitive spirit and adaptability, but Texas claimed the trophy.

The No. 1 Longhorns (6-0, 2-0) gave up a 42-yard field, but its defense set the tone for the remainder of the game. After Ewers’ eight-yard touchdown pass to tight end Gunnar Helm, the Longhorns never trailed as it trampled No. 18 Oklahoma, 34-3, in the 120th meeting at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday evening.

The Texas defense, with its strategic planning and impeccable execution, took control of the game early. It held the Sooners’ backfield to a mere 85 yards on 38 carries, and its dominance left a lasting impression. Without a ground game, the Sooners turned to the quick pass, which sometimes moved the ball.

After surrendering a 42-yard field goal, Texas scored 34 unanswered points, beginning with a 75-yard drive, which concluded after ten plays when Ewers found tight end Gunnar Helm on a seven-yard misdirection touchdown pass.

Ewers 26-yard pass to Moore, Jr., and 21-yarder to Helm’s at the Sooners’ 11 spunged the frame. Three plays later, Helm made the most out of a reception from Ewers by shedding one would-be tackler as he dived into the end zone from the one-yard line, giving Texas the lead, 7-3, following Bert Auburn’s PAT and never trailed after.

Despite the odds, Ewers displayed remarkable resilience with a rib injury endured a month ago. His performance, passing for 199 yards on 20-of-29 attempts and two touchdowns, showed his unwavering dedication to the Longhorns.

Soon after, Oklahoma’s freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins and freshman runningback Taylor Tatum suffered back-to-back fumbles, one of which led to Longhorn’s second touchdown. Hawkins, the first freshman to start against the Longhorns in this rich rivalry, finished 16-of-24 for 120 yards and suffered five sacks. The injury-plagued Sooners managed 225 total yards.

Oklahoma Coach Brent Benables told ABC sports analyst Holly Rowe during the pregame warmups before the game that there is no substitute for being physical. That’s going to be paramount today. Nothing affects the game like turnovers; taking care of the ball gives you an opportunity to win this game.

In the 120th meeting, Texas erased the thoughts of the Sooners (4-2, 1-2) walking out of the Red River Rivalry, which dates back to 1900, with yet another unexpected victory. Texas holds the series lead, 64-52-5, and since 1929, the game continues annually during one of Texas’ favorite pastimes, the State Fair of Texas.

Oklahoma vs. Texas rivalry sits second at (44) behind Michigan vs. Ohio State at (49) for the most AP-ranked matchups since 1936 of the poll era.

Next week, the Longhorns will host Georgia, the 2021 and 22 National Champions.

Texas Southern erased a nine-game losing streak by defeating arch-rival Prairie View A&M University, 27-9, in the Labor Day Classic on Saturday night at Panther Stadium.

It came down to defense for the Tigers, who had not won the classic since 2014. Texas Southern (1-0) recorded eight tackles for loss yards and five sacks, surprising last season’s SWAC champion.

New coach Cris Dishman, among the Tiger Faithfuls, couldn’t have been more satisfied with the victory.

Defensive lineman Keelon Cox gave the Panthers offensive front fits all evening. Linebackers Isaiah Bogerty and Jacob Williams joined Keelon to serve as a stocking stuffer as the attack mounted throughout the evening. All three are responsible for the Tigers’ five sacks and lost yards.

Prairie View took the early lead on Guillermo Garcia Rodriguez’s 37-yard field goal, but things began to spiral out of control shortly after.

Prairie View (0-1) committed nine penalties for 89 yards while seeking ways to move the ball effectively. Still, the spark it needed had never materialized. But the bright side watched 6’4″ senior receiver Shemar Savage snag six passes for 105 yards.

The Panthers trailed 13-6 at intermission and failed to make up ground in the second half as the Tigers outscored PV 14-3 in the third and fourth quarters.

Texas Southern quarterback K.J. Cooper led the offensive attack, passing for 126 yards on 19 of 29 attempts. Freshman running back Danny Green, Jr. scored twice and tallied 81 yards on 15 carries. Green’s effort helped the Tigers pile 346 yards of offense as opposed to Prairie View A&M’s 240.

The Bulldogs open the season at the top, with Carson Beck’s return playing a pivotal role. Beck’s impressive stats of 3,941 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions reassure Georgia’s position.

With the top recruiting class and the glory of back-to-back national championships, the Bulldogs are on a winning streak to add to its cause.

Still, the road is rocky, with the added pressures of facing an unfamiliar foe in Texas and the usual opponents. Starting the season, Georgia will host No. 16 Clemson, which will eventually face additional ranked foes in No.5 Alabama and No. 6 Ole Miss as the season progresses.

No. 2 Ohio State appears strong again after reaping from the transfer portal. Although the Buckeyes lost starters receiver Julian Fleming, runningback Chip Trayanum, and 12 other players in the portal, they gained six key players, including Caleb Downs, former five-star safety/ Alabama, Julian Sayin, former five-star quarterback Alabama, Quinshon Judkins, Will Howard, Seth McLaughlin, four-star center, and Will Kacmarek, a three-star tight end.

Parity is the reflection of the top ten. Any one of these teams could turn into something special.

No. 11 Missouri rounds out the bottom 15, ending with No. 25 Texas A&M.

Only a few top-tier matchups for week ten. Yet, here are a few games that could grab the attention of college fans leading up to next week. Georgia looks to stay unbeaten when it rolls out the carpet for No. 14 Missouri, No. 5 Washington will face No. 24 USC on the road, and No. 25 Kansas State travels to No. 7 Texas.

As we all know, Georgia still holds the top spot. Three of Georgia’s last four opponents are ranked in the top 25, including No. 14 Missouri, No. 11 Mississippi, and Tennessee. The Dawgs will close its season against Georgia Tech on November 25th.

No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Ohio State, and No. 4 Florida State have all kept hope alive by avoiding the upset bug. Still, in the upcoming weeks, Michigan and Ohio State will face off, while Florida State contends with in-state rivals Miami and Florida before the season concludes.

Before Prairie View opens against arch-rival Texas Southern in the Labor Day Classic on September 02, 2023, it will have a plan in place. Last season, the Panthers defeated Texas Southern 40-23.

The Panthers’ recent bragging rights date back to March 16, 2021, when it defeated Texas Southern twice in one year. The final decision, 20-19, and September 4, 2021, 40-17, as the Corona Virus outbreak carried an output that strained the world.

This season’s experience is on the Panthers’ side, with 11 players named to the Phil Steele preseason all-SWAC team. Second-team running back Ahmad Antoine, quarterback Trazon Connley, and linebacker Keyshawn Johnson will provide help. The third team features offensive linemen Eric Dunn and Arrington Taylor, linebackers Trevion Green and Warren Shankle, free safety Tario Mulmore, running back Caleb Johnson, kicker Carlos Villagomez and receiver Brian Jenkins, Jr.

Duo threat Connolly led the offense last season, passing for 1,478 and 11 touchdowns. He compiled 661 rushing yards.

After day one of training camp, coach McDowell felt good about the quarterback position. All three performed well, according to McDowell.

Still, other things could have gone better, McDowell explained.

McDowell reminded his team to avoid mental mistakes and play up to their experience ahead of its matchup versus Texas Southern.

With 18 incoming recruits, McDowell and his staff expect to have its hands full.

Death Valley is an annual hotbed for NFL talent. Yearly, the Tigers of Louisiana State University field some of the top prospects in college football. This season is on schedule to duplicate its history.

The Tigers finished 10-4 and 6-3 in the SEC last season. Still, LSU flirted with an opportunity to play for a national title.

Though it may have been a rebuilding year, last season had its share of his and lows. LSU dropped a decision to Texas A&M, 38-23, and Tennessee, 40-13. The Tigers lost to the Seminoles in the opener, 24-23. Yet, it knocked off Alabama 32-31 to win the SEC West and fell to Georgia 50-30 in the SEC Championship game.

Credit second-year coach Brian Kelly for preparing LSU. Now a year of growth, with the addition of incoming recruits, the Tigers seek the perfect ambush. However, it will be challenging after displaying last year’s potential.

Aside from the talent, the No. 5 ranked Tigers will claw for a national title. But the road is bumpy. It jumps into the fire when it travels to meet No. 8 Florida State in the season’s opener.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels will lead the offense, and outside of tackle Will Campbell and receiver Malik Nabers, the defense will counter with sophomore defensive tackle Mason Smith, junior linebacker Harold Perkins, senior linebacker Omar Speights, junior cornerback Zy Alexander, junior safety Duce Chestnut, senior linebacker Ovie Oghoufo, and junior defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo. Transfer linebacker Omar Speights will add support.

Its November 4th meeting in Alabama could decide who plays for the SEC championship and possibly a spot in the College final four.

Any of the top three teams could sit atop the rankings. However, we will side with Georgia, which has talent at every position on its roster.

Fresh off last season’s championship, the top Dawgs are focused on returning to the final four. Georgia, like many other teams, has holes to fill. The schedule is its biggest enemy some say, but Coach Kirby disagrees with. It’s about what we do and not who we play, says Kirby. The schedule won’t be the reason the Dawgs stop pursuing its third consecutive championship.

Oklahoma, who appeared to be the top threat on Georgia’s schedule, was canceled because of the SEC expansion. The Sooners and Texas will join the SEC in 2025. Still, according to sources, the two could join sooner.

Georgia placed 11 players on the 2023 preseason media days all-southeastern team’s first team and four on the second team. This supports another reason the Dawgs are favorites to win the national championship. Junior tight end Brock Bowers is on the first team offense list. (Sophomore) Mykel Williams, senior Nazir Stackhouse, junior Jamon Dumas-Johnson, sophomore Malaki Starks, and juniors Kamari Lassiter and Javon Bullard also received first-team honors.

Senior running back Kendall Milton, senior guard Xavier Truss, junior linebacker Smael Mondon, Jr. Linebacker Jalon Walker, and senior snapper William Mote round out the second team.

One recent change watched Mike Bobo become the new offensive coordinator after Todd Monken left for the Baltimore Ravens.

Last season did not end well for the Wolverines. But the return of key starters has the city of Ann Arbor thinking championship. No. 2 Michigan is looking to play one game more than last season.

TCU upset the Wolverines, 51-45, in the CFP semifinals.

Will this be the season Michigan writes its own story? J.J. McCarthy is back with help. Running backs Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards are among the top contributors, along with Kris Jenkins, Will Johnson, Rod Moore, Drake Nugent, and Zak Zinter.

The Wolverines out-duel its arc rival Ohio State the last two seasons, 45-23 (2022) and 42-27 (2021), snapping an eight-game losing streak for the first time in 22 years. This past season’s win helped propel Michigan into the final four.

The No. 3 Buckeyes, much like the Dawgs, has talent in each position on its roster, and looks to snap the Wolverines’ two-game winning streak when it meets in Ann Arbor on November 25th.

The Buckeyes will have to replace CJ Stroud, now with the Texans. Devin Brown and Kyle McCord will battle for the quarterback position. McCord is a true junior entering his third season with two years of eligibility left. He has played in 12 games. The accurate gunslinger has thrown for 606 yards, finishing 15-of-18 for 319 yards and two touchdowns against Akron. His arm is sharp with the underneath passes and the deep ball. McCord can hang his hat on education as a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and an Academic all-Big Ten honoree majoring in communications.

Brown played in two games in 2022, versus Toledo and Rutgers. The red-shirt sophomore arrived on campus in January 2022 and has four years of eligibility remaining.

A finger injury during spring drills sidelined him for the final four practices and the spring game. He’s also an OSU Scholar-Athlete majoring in finance.

Here’s a look at the remaining top 25 teams.
