Despite the unfavorable conditions on the concluding day of the 98th Clyde Littlefield Relays held at Mike Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus, the schedule proceeded as planned.

The cool, wet weather resulted in a downpour that left standing water on the track, necessitating a one-hour delay to allow for drying. The events resumed later in the afternoon. However, many unattached athletes and several teams chose to withdraw during the finals, opting not to risk potential injuries. Most of the top times were achieved during the preliminaries on Friday.

Annually, one of the nation’s top track and field meets showcase some of the nation’s top talented athletes from across the country, spanning from high school to professional ranks. Coverage in Texas’s capital city transitioned into anticipated celebrations as thrilling moments unfolded. Fans were eager, ready to witness the next significant highlight at the relays.

Several colleges and universities made its presence known. Cal State Fullerton played a significant role in various events, including Abel Alejandro Jordan sprinting across the finish line to secure victory in the 100 Meter Dash with a time of 10.12 seconds. Luke Hitchcock claimed second place in the 1A Men’s 1500 Meter Run Finals, finishing in 3:49.46. The Titans took second place in both the 4×100 and 4×400 Meter Relays, with times of 39.08 and 3:06.85, respectively. Hawkin Miller achieved third place in the 1A Shot Put Finals with a throw of 60-5.00. A fierce competition for the top position in the men’s 5000 meters saw Texas Tech’s Victor Kipkoech outpace Odessa College’s Justus Soget Kiplagat, clocking in at 13:58.54 compared to Kiplagat’s 13:59.41.

The University of Texas men’s team enjoyed a successful day. Kendrick Smallwood won the title for the Longhorns in the 110 Hurdles with a time of 13.16 seconds. UT’s Kody Blackwood triumphed in the 400 Meter Hurdles, finishing in 49.58 seconds. Chris Brinkley from Texas finished third in the 400 Meter Hurdles with a time of 50.06 seconds, while Hudson Bennett placed second in the men’s 3000 Meter Steeplechase Finals with a time of 9:06.24. The men’s 4×100 Meter Relay team finished in third place with a time of 39.10 seconds. Brandon Gorski finished second place in the men’s long jump with a leap of 23-7.75. Kelsey Daniel won both the 1A Men’s Long Jump and Triple Jump Finals with distances of 25-10.50 and 52-9.75, respectively. Agbonkonkon Osawese held on for third place in the 1A Men’s High Jump Finals with a height of 6-10.50. Benjamin Shue emerged victorious in the men’s Discus Finals with a throw of 178-1.00. Michael Pinones and Shaiquan Dunn claimed the top two positions in the 1A Men’s Shot Put Finals with throws of 64-5.00 and 60-8.25.

U-of-H claimed victories in the 4×100 and 4×200 Meter Relays with times of 38.69 and 1:22.48, respectively. Patrick Flowers achieved a commendable third place in the 3000 Meters Steeplechase with a time of 9:08.91, while Antrea Mita earned second place honors in the 1A Men’s High Jump with a height of 7-0.25.

On the high school circuit, two of the nation’s premier track athletes, Klein Collins’ junior Andrew Brown and C.E. King’s sophomore Dillion Mitchell, provided the audience with thrilling performances. Brown crossed the finish line in the 110 Hurdles, astonishing fans with a wind-aided time of 12.97 during the preliminaries. He also triumphed in the 300 Meter Hurdles, clocking in at 35.61. In the finals, Brown outperformed Houston Worthing’s Avonte Earl, a nationally ranked hurdler, finishing with a time of 13.15 compared to Earl’s 13.38.

Mitchell followed suit with an impressive display, energizing the crowd as he sprinted to a wind-legal time of 10.10 in the 100 Meter Dash. Furthermore, Mitchell played a crucial role in anchoring the Panthers’ 4×200 Meter Relay team to victory, receiving the baton in third place behind Frisco Heritage and Long Beach Poly. He swiftly made up ground on Frisco and momentarily surged past the Jackrabbits, securing a first-place finish in the preliminaries.

Atascocita’s Mariah Maxwell, representing APXP, a private college preparatory training program, crossed the finish line ahead of Howard University’s Yahnari Lyons, winning the Invitational Women 200 Meter Dash Finals with a time of 22.25. Mariah, who is a twin, is still attending high school and competes alongside her sister Mia, as both joined the APXP Training Group last May.

The annual event, influenced by the participation of seven high schools from out of state saw Poly and Wilson from Long Beach, California, which have been long-time supporters of the relays and consistently demonstrate competitiveness. The other participating schools included El Cerrito, NC, Flossmoor (Homewood-), IL, IMG Academy, FL, La Jolla (SD), CA, and Rancho Cucamonga, CA.

Flossmoor’s Zion Morrison kept pace for a third place tie in the 100 Meter Dash with a time of 10.58. However, he entered the finals with the second fastest time of 10.33, just behind Mitchell. William Bundy claimed the title in the triple jump with a distance of 46:9.75.

IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, witnessed its girls’ distance runners joining forces to create remarkable memory on Friday, winning the 4000 Meter distance medley relay with a time of 11:37.38. Cy-Fair Bridgeland came in second with a time of 11:49.44.

Following the success of the girls, the IMG Boys also triumphed, winning both the 4000 Meter distance medley and the 4×400 Meter Relays with times of 10:09.91 and 7:46.66, respectively. The Home School Athletic Association challenged the Ascenders, finishing in second place with a time of 10:17.97. Additionally, Ascenders’ Matthew Dodds finished third in the finals of the 1600 Meter run with a time of 4:10.91. Winston Schroder contributed to the Ascenders’ achievements by grabbing second place in the long jump with a distance of 24-5.25. Gabriel Pelletier tied with several competitors, clearing a height of 16-0.50 in the pole vault.

Long Beach Poly established its dominance with a time of 3:23.86, narrowly defeating Katy, which finished with a time of 3:24.17, to win the Boys Sprint Medley Relay.

Rancho Cucamonga secured the second position in the 4×100 Meter Relay.

Despite dropping temperatures, the rain and wind on the final day did not hinder competition from meeting the fans’ expectations. A variety of athletes noted its progress as they recorded lower times, personal bests, and significant accomplishments both as individuals and as a team.

San Antonio is poised to welcome one of the most essential Final Fours in college basketball history. Being the seventh largest city in the United States and the second largest in Texas, Houston is a popular choice among fans and is expected to garner substantial support.

San Antonio is renowned for landmarks such as the Alamo, its military heritage, the River Walk, Sea World, and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Nevertheless, these popular attractions and their associated celebrations will play a secondary role during the weekend of the Final Four.

Auburn (32-5), Duke (35-3), Florida (34-4), and Houston (34-4) all secured the top seeds in their respective regions, fulfilling expectations. Auburn overcame Michigan State with a score of 70-64, Duke defeated Alabama 85-65, Florida staged a comeback to beat Texas Tech 84-79, and Houston concluded Tennessee’s remarkable season with a 69-50 victory.

All four top-seeded teams reached the Final Four, a scenario reminiscent of 2008 when Kansas, Memphis, North Carolina, and UCLA all progressed to this stage. Per Sportsline Consensus, Florida, a 2.5-point favorite, will face SEC rival Auburn, who will meet on Saturday at 6:09 PM Eastern. The game between Duke and Houston will take place later that evening. Despite Auburn being the overall top seed in the tournament, Duke is considered the frontrunner to claim the championship, according to ESPN Bet.

The championship will be decided on the following Monday night in San Antonio.

Entering the Big 12 this season could pose pressure for the Houston Cougars. Facing the likes of Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, and others, make up a conference that’s no stranger to the college football playoff.

The Cougars will look to improve on an 8-5 record over last season, which will be challenging. But attempting to keep paste with the Big 12 may rest in recruiting four and five-star players.

Finding leaders on defense could aid the Cougars. Chidozie Nwankwo and Sedrick Wilson are vital in the middle. Edge rushers Nelson Caesar, Zykeius, and Oklahoma transfer David Ugwoegbu will apply pressure. Brooks supports the Cougars at safety while defensive backs Jalen Emory and Alex Hogan defend the passing lanes. Additional help comes from transfers Brian George (Texas A&M) and Isaiah Hamilton (Texas Southern).

Quarterback Lucas Coley or Donovan Smith will direct the offense. Houston expects running backs Stacy Sneed and Brandon Campbell to establish the running game. Smith and Coley are battling for the quarterback job. Preseason camp should decide the outcome. However, Smith may have the inside track after passing for 2,686 yards and 19 touchdowns in 21 games as a Red Raider.

Now that the Cougars are officially in the Power 5 as of July 01, 2023, it will take on one of the most vigorous schedules in the country.

Dana Holgorsen worked as U of H football coach for eight months. Mike Leach, eight years at Washington State. The comparison entered the topic of discussion at the press game conference to show why Leach’s success at the school is far ahead.

Timing may have served as part of the issue, as Houston fell within inches of recovering an onside kick, which would have allowed it an opportunity to tie or take the lead with under a 2:20 left. However, Washington State’s Martin fell on the loose ball to help preserve a 31-24 victory over the Cougars on Friday night at NRG in the 2019 Advocare Kickoff Classic.

Houston trailed, 31-17 with 3:50 left before piecing together a seven-play, 75-yard drive to pull within seven points, 31-24. However, the final margin stood.

Houston lined up in an onside kick formation while Alford stubbed-bouncer took one bounce too many and landed in the hands of Martin, who leaped high to get control of the loose ball at Washington State’s 47-yard line. But Washington State’s running back Max Borghi’s 17-yard carry to the Cougars 36, all but ended any hopes of a comeback. Three plays later, quarterback Anthony Gordon kneeled on the ball two consecutive downs to run out the clock.

Even after battling multiple penalties and turnovers, the Cougars found themselves in a position to draw within seven after King scored on a 12-yard run to make the score 31-24 following the extra point kick.

Houston trailed 21-14 as the fourth quarter opened and stared down a sinkhole when Borghi beat a defender on a fly pattern out of the backfield. The 76-yard touchdown did not stand because of receiver Brandon Arconado’s offensive pass interference infraction.

King led the Cougars on the ground and through the air. He completed 14-of-24 attempts for 128 yards, a touchdown, and had 17 carries for 107 yards and two additional scores.

Despite slowing down Washington State’s high profile passing attack, Gordon exploited the Cougars defense by finding Arconado several times behind the linebackers but inside the safety’s.

Gordon shredded Houston’s defense to the tune of 440 yards on 36-of-48 attempts, three touchdowns, and one interception. Arconado induced the most damage in the Cougars secondary, reeling in nine passes for 115 yards.

Plagued by penalties, the Cougars found themselves in a hole too huge to dig out. A holding penalty negated King’s 72-yard touchdown scamper. It all happened when the Cougars forced Washington State to punt on consecutive series.

After, Houston used a short field from its 46-yard line, which led to Witherspoon’s 42-yard field goal, trimming the lead to four, 21-17, with 10:45 left.

Then Gordon guided Washington State on a 95-yard scoring drive. On the fourth play of the possession, Cougars sacked Gordon for a one-yard loss, but he regrouped and flipped a 31-yard pass to Arconado at the Washington State’s 45. Gordon followed the play with a 33-yard pass to receiver Davontavean” Tay” Martin to give Washington State a first down at the Cougars 22. Eventually, Gordon’s seven-yard touchdown toss to receiver Travell Harris capped the drive and increased its lead, 28-17, with 6:43 to go.

Washington State (3-0) added a 22-yard field to close it’s scoring as a result of a turnover when defensive lineman Cosmas Kwete corralled a loose ball after Stevenson fumbled when he caught a short pass at the 26 with 6:34 left.

After a quarter of stellar defense, King directed the Cougars on its best drive of the quarter, moving 82 yards in 15 plays, capped by King’s 13-yard scoring pass to receiver Marquez Stevenson with 7:33 left in the second quarter. King highlighted the drive twice. Facing third and four, on what looked to be a sack, watched King escape two defenders while dancing down to the 29-yard line to give the Cougars a first down. Then four plays later, King faked the handoff to running back Kyle Porter and ripped off 21 yards to the Washington State’s 38. After Washington State’s cornerback, Marcus Strong’s pass interference call gave Houston a first down at the four-yard line. Two plays later, Stevenson’s reception gave the Cougars a 7-0 lead following Dalton Witherspoon’s extra point kick.

“I thought we played frantic in the first half, both offensively and defensively,” Mike Leach explained. “Then, when we settled in, I thought we played well the second half. I wished we played the whole game like that, but again that’s part of the process to develop as a team.”

Following, Washington State answered when it pieced together a seven-play, 72-yard drive when Gordon completed four of four passes, including the tying touchdown throw to receiver Renard Bell, who quickly got behind Houston’s defensive back with 5:36 left in the second quarter.

Houston (1-2) continued its attack as King threw an 18-yard strike to Stevenson coupled with an unnecessary roughness call, which spotted the ball at the Washington State’s 28. Then King and running back Patrick Carr shared a pair of carries until King finished the drive with a one-yard scoring run. That bump its lead, 14-7 with 2:27 left in the first half.

Mike Leach and company had no thoughts of laying down before the half, driving the field to the Cougars 20. On third and nine, safety Gleson Sprewell stepped in front of Gordon’s pass and intercepted it in the end zone with 24 seconds left to halt the possession.

“I thought the first half was really tough as we’re learning some of those lessons,” Coach Leach said. “I felt like it was swimming in quicksand in the first half. I thought as a team, you learn a lot and develope a lot along the way. One was, playing on the road in a place where you got to deal with the distractions and transition.”

The flags out in right-center field blew roughly toward the north. In the same manner, Ryan Randel greeted the Aggies batters.

He worked the mound at a quick paste. At 6:31 pm he hurled his first pitch, and by 9:13 pm the University of Houston players and coaches were celebrating after downing No. 7 Texas A&M, 4-1 on Tuesday night at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.

Cougars junior pitcher Randel, who flirted with a no-hitter through five frames dominated the Aggies on the mound throughout the evening. The capacity crowd watched Randel surrender one run, two hits, and a walk over six and a third inning of work.

The 6’7”, 230 pound, hard-throwing right-hander had no reason to be concerned with strikeouts, his commanding-control led the way, producing ground and fly ball outs which helped to preserve the victory.

As the game progressed, so did Texas A&M’s frustrations. Unable to find the right mound mix, coach Rob Childress used six different pitchers.

The Aggies struggled and never found it’s rhythm. Even when it got aboard with walks, Randel would clamp down and get out of the inning.

The Cougar ( 22-15) defense backed Randel nicely, committing only one error in an otherwise stellar day at the park. Sure-handed shortstop Kobe
Hyland followed up with a couple of great plays by throwing out would-be base runners.

Although runs were hard to come by, Cougars bats gave Randel an early lead to work with.

Third baseman Jared Triolo led off with a single. Right fielder Blake Way followed with an RBI double, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Then, freshman designated hitter Derrick Cherry drove in Way, increasing its deficit, 2-0.

Four out of the first five innings were three up and three down for Randel. In the top of third, the Cougars suffered its lone error. But Houston brushed it off by turning an inning-ending double play. That’s the kind of evening Cougar fans enjoyed.

In the bottom of the second inning, Aggies pitcher Chandler Jozwiak’s throwing error allowed Brad Burckel to score from second base. That gave Houston a 3-0 lead.

Texas A&M (27-11-1) saw its best chances in the top of the sixth inning when center fielder Zach DeLoach led off with a double to left-center.

Designated hitter Brett Brown grounded out as DeLoach moved to third base. Then, first baseman Hunter Watson’s run-scoring fielders choice plated DeLoach, trimming the lead, 3-1. Just when the Aggies thought it had its third base runner of the inning, second baseman Bryce Blaum hit a rocket shot that had double written all over it, however, Cougars third baseman Triolo made a leaping slab to record the third out.

Sean Bretz relieved Randel, recording five outs and Fred Villarreal got the save for Houston.

Despite being outhit, the Cougars offense proved to be clutch although it overcame an interesting Cincinnati’s ninth-inning rally.

Still, the Cougars hung on and bagged the rubber game by beating the Cincinnati Bearcats, 8-4 at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park on Saturday evening.

Cougars reliever Brian Randall struggled in the ninth inning, surrendering a walk to shortstop Joey Bellini, second baseman Wyatt Stapp followed with a single, and catcher Mitch Holding was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That set up A.J. Bumpass’ two run-scoring double in the gap to left-center, making the score, 8-4, favoring the Cougars.

The Cougars won the series, 2-1. The loss came in game one, 3-2.
The threat continued with runners on second and third. Shawn Bretz relieved Randall and recorded the last two outs of the game when first baseman Griffin Merritt and Cole Murphy flew out.

The Cougars (24-6, 8-7) began its offensive surge in the bottom of the second inning when third baseman Jared Triolo’s two-RBI single gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Houston worked Bearcats pitcher Garrett Schoenle, earning two walks, shortstop Kobe Hyland took a pitch to the back and a base hit.

Cougars’ Devon Roedahl (6-2) got the win, and Sean Bretz picked up his first save. Jared Triolo finished 3-of-4 at the plate with 3-RBIs. Tyler Bielamowicz (2-of-5) and Grayson Padgett (2-of-3) collect two hits each.

In the top of the third, the Bearcats trim the lead in half when center fielder Jeremy Johnson led off with a double. One out later, shortstop Bellini drove in Johnson, making the score, 2-1.

Cincinnati (18-21, 8-7) outhit the Cougars, 11-8 but had trouble delivering clutch hits with runners on base.

Back on offense, Houston answered the Bearcats by building a 4-1 lead. Rey Fuentes got aboard with a walk. Padgett singled to right field and Bielamowicz drove in Fuentes with a soft looper behind third base.

After Kobe Hyland drew a walk, Clayton Colvin came on to relieve Schoenie with the bases loaded. Colvin managed to get an out when Kyle Lovelace laid a drag bunt down the third-base side, which was fielded by third baseman Eric Santiago, who threw to home plate to get the force out.

However, Brad Burckel’s infield single gave the Cougars a 4-1 lead.
Houston kept the pressure, scoring three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh as it led, 8-2.

A typical day for a spring season track and field meet, quickly turned into an afternoon of cool-wind torture. Temperatures reached 70 degrees by noon the winds picked up, and the chill dipped down to 61 after a light shower past through the area.

However, the bad weather had no bearing on over 7,000 athletes who showed up for the 92nd Running of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Michael A. Myers Stadium on the final Saturday of competition.

Steaming from last season’s finals, it was clear The University of Houston and LSU Men arrived on the UT campus to impose its will.

Soon after the National Anthem, the battle began with the first race of the finals. From the opening leg of the 4×100 Meter Relay, the Cougars raced neck to neck with LSU until its third leg Brandon Taylor gave the Cougars a small cushion. The lead faded quickly as Tigers anchor leg Jaron Flournoy closed in on Travis Collins and edged him at the finish line. The first-place finish avenged last season’s defeat to the Cougars, who set the record in the 4X100 Meter Relay (38.17) in the College Championships.

However, the Cougars would return the favor in 4×200 Meter Relay. Nicholas Alexander, Mario Burke, Kahmari Montgomery, and Obi Igbokwe ran four sturdy legs and led the race from start to finish. But again Tigers anchor leg Flournoy closed in, nearly making up the stagger but it wasn’t to be as Igbokwe held on, leading Houston to victory. Also, the Cougars finished second in the Men’s 4X400 Invitational Meter Relay (3:07.37).
Houston’s Taylor ran to a third-place finish in the Men’s 100 Meter Dash (10.18).

Another LSU, Houston battle watched Cougars Amere Lattin (13.40) edge Damien Thomas (13.62) in the Men’s 110 Hurdles.

In section A of the Men’s High Jump, LSU’s JuVaughn Harrison finish second with a jump of 7-3 1/4.

During the moment, the Lady Tigerettes were busy battling The University of Texas and the rest of a talented field at the meet.

In other spectacular finishes, Tigerettes sprinter Sha”Carri Richardson, a product of Dallas Carter high school won the 100 Meter Dash (10.91) out-dueling UT’s standout Kynnedy Flannel (11.16) an Alvin high school graduate, and anchored LSU to a stunning first-place finish in the 4×100 Meter Relay (43.58). Richardson, who had trouble with the baton exchange, tracked down Arkansas’ anchor leg, who appeared to have taken off too soon before receiving the baton exchange.

The future looks bright for LSU and Texas. Flannel and Richardson are freshmen.

LSU’s Tonea Marshall claimed the women 100 hurdles (12.96). Marshall looked to have come out of her lane as she cleared the last hurdle but later it was revealed second-place finisher Arkansas’ Janeek Brown who raced side by Marshall, trail leg clipped the last hurdler, causing her to take a spill and a finish a second later (12.97).

Sam Houston State’s Chris Jefferson followed up his 200 Meter Dash win last week at the Victor Lopez Classic by defending Nike’s Anaso Jobodwana in the Men’s Invitational 200 Meter Dash (20.52) opposed to (20.68).

Texas came away with a pair of key wins. In the Men’s Jerry Thomas Mile Invitational, Sam Worley separated himself from a crowded pack to claim the crown in a time of (4:04.59) and Teahna Daniels, competing in the women invitational, won the 200 Meter Dash (23.29). Teammates Serenity Douglas (23.71) and Kennedy Simon (23.79) placed third and fourth.

Destiny Collins placed third in the Women’s Section A 1500 Meter Run (4:23.09). Adrian Piperi finished the Shot Put with a throw of 67-2 3/4 and the silver. The Lady Longhorns claimed third place in 4X400 Meter Relay (3:35.24).

UT’s men (40.06) and women (43.93) 4X100 Meter Relay team’s competed in the invitational bracket. Both came away with third-place finishes. Elena Bruckner grabbed bronze in the women’s discus.

Texas A&M Men and Baylor Lady Bears took the men’s and women’s 4X800 Relays. A&M Men doubled its winning by defeating LSU in the 4X400 Meter Relay (3:03.30). The Lady Aggies finished first in the 200 Meter Relay (1:31.88) and the 4X400 Meter Relay (3:32.93). Houston Lady Cougars placed second (1:34.58).

On a slightly breezes Saturday evening at Wendel D. Ley Track and field Stadium, temperatures were moderate at the 37th Annual Victor Lopez Classic at 63 degrees. The long-running event endured overcast skies, but conditions remained dry.

Within a week, Fort Bend Marshall improved its time of (40.66) to (40.39) in the 4X100 Meter Relay. With the clocking, the Buffalo’s hold the top spot in the nation in the event for the second consecutive week.

The Quatro of Devon Achane, Malik Hornsby, Sylvester Labome and Bryson Stubblefield, finalized the race.

The success does not come as a surprise. The experience of three sophomores and one junior of last year have developed a strong backbone for this season’s young Buffs. The track date interferes with the timing of its upcoming district meet. However, the team will make the trip to Austin, joining spectators in the stands.

Student-athletes completed from far and locally at the event. With standing room only, fans cheered as track times dropped.

Marshall’s Achane, one of the top football players in the country, sprinted to the third-best time among the nation in the boys 200 Meter Dash at (20.88). To add to an impressive evening, the top nine finishers of the boys 1500 Meter Run, finished in the top nine nationally.
