Cavaliers get past DeSoto for title

Floyd’s 8 reception day helps produce first
7 on 7 State Title for Cavaliers

College Station – After rebounding from a one point semifinal lost 21-20 to the Cy-Fair Bobcats in the Red Bull Game Breakers Qualifiers Tournament at the Cotton Bowl, the Lake Travis Cavaliers defeated DeSoto Eagles 42-39 Saturday evening for the 7 on 7 Division I State Championship at Kyle Field. With the win the Cavaliers add to an impressive string of state titles, that gave them their fourth straight football state title and their first 7 on 7 State Title.
For the most part a closely played game was separated by a couple of DeSoto turnovers.
Connor Floyd led the way with four touchdowns on eight catches. The sure handed Floyd found openings in the Eagles defense throughout the game.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an 15-0 lead, both touchdowns going to Floyd, who seemed to be anywhere the ball was.
DeSoto got on the scoreboard with a touchdown to David Porter, trailing 15-6 after the extra was no good.
Both teams traded stops before the Cavaliers found Floyd streaking across the middle of the field behind the defense for the touchdown that increased their lead 21-6.
It’s pretty special because nobody at Lake Travis has ever done this in the football program but to come here with DeSoto who is a great team and a perfect team to play in the championship. With this going through my head being in the state championship in regular football and here with the 7 on 7 it’s kind of the same just dreams are coming true and everybody is loving the atmosphere,” said Lake Travis Receiver Griffin Gilbert.
A short touchdown catch by Cameron White and the two conversion cut the Cavaliers lead to seven, 21-14 before halftime.
The factoring blow came while Lake Travis was leading 28-21 with the Eagles in possession of the ball. Zachary Streuling picked off Eagles QB Ryan Polite.
With time ticking away Lake Travis upped their lead 34-21 when Michael Brewer found Kenyon Brock in the end zone.
