Guyer just removed from Class 4A a season ago, may have surprised some fans but not their selves; Coach Walsh thinks a top 10 4A teams can compete with 5A football.
By far it was the best game of the evening.
Cedar Hill (1-0) knocked off Denton Guyer 42-41 in an overtime thriller Monday night in the third game of four played at Cowboy Stadium in the Kirk Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic.
After stopping Cedar Hill on their first two drives, QB J. W. Walsh put the Wildcats on the board with 66 yard keeper, 7-0.
“We were focused and we handled adversity really well. On my mind was never give up. I saw some of our coaches with their head down and shaking their heads. I told them that it’s not over and we’re going to fight through and that’s what we did,” said Cedar Hill’s Receiver Lovett Gibson.
On the very next possession the Longhorns responded with a Driphus Jackson 35 yard touchdown strike to John Albercrombie to even the score at 7.
Two defensive stands enabled Cedar Hill to take their first lead of the day on Albercrombie’s 13 yard touchdown reception from Jackson with 2:53 to go before halftime.
Early in the third quarter both teams added touchdowns, still with the Longhorns holding a 7 point advantage, 21-14.
A 10 play 64 yard drive tied the score at 21 when Walsh went from three yards out with 6:11 to go in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, pass interference was assessed against the Longhorns corner back Dashune Barlow allowing Guyer a first down at Cedar Hill’s 33 yard line. Two plays later Walsh sliced through the middle on a keeper to help the Wildcats regain the lead for the first time since the first quarter, 28-21.
Two minutes and four seconds later Cedar drove 77 yards to knot the game at 28 on Lovett Gibson’s 14 yard touchdown catch from Jackson.
Both teams scored again before entering overtime.
In overtime Guyer took first possession. Two plays later they were in for the score on Walsh’s 9 yard run but the play of the day came when special teams lined up for the extra point. Wildcats holder didn’t get the ball down on the T causing Kicker Josh King to kick a low line drive that bounced off the back of one of their linemen.
Longhorn’s Quarterback Jackson found an opening in Guyer’s Defense and made his way down to the 13 yard line. It all started after a Cedar Hill false start giving them possession at the 30. Two plays later Junior Receiver Andre Anderson tied the score at 41 on a 9 yard reverse with extra point to come which provided the nail in the coffin.
“I was expecting it to be a tough game, no doubt but I wasn’t focused on the names on the side line. I was focused on my offense and my defense and how we were going to play. I knew it would be a dual,” said Cedar Hill’s Quarterback Driphus Jackson
