Speed and skill is the norm for the Golden Eagles
It was a nice breezy afternoon for some football in Eagle country. The Golden Eagles of Klein Forest concluded their spring with the green and white game.
For Coach Hammock and staff, it’s a great time to evaluate players and to see how far along the kids have improved.
A packed crowd watched from the stands while others crowded around the fence to get a glimpse of the upcoming Eagles. The hour 45 minute scrimmage was loaded with young speedy legs and crushing hits that brought fans to its feet.
Klein Forest will be more like the normal this upcoming football season with an abundance of speed and talent at the skill positions. On offense all everything Quarterback Matt Davis returns from a torn ACL from a year ago to lead a group of sure handed receivers but the interior line will need to mature fast if the Eagles are to put up offensive numbers as they did two seasons ago. Speedy running backs Kenneth Jones, Anthony Jones will be called on for their support to help balance out their offensive attack. A big plus for the Eagles may come from a great supporting cast of receivers who showed good hands this spring. Such are Markel Stewart-Gillespe, Desmond VanDyke, Trent Richmond came off of ACL, Derrick Smith, Kenneth Jones, Anthony Jones.
Davis season was cut short last year in a preseason game against Cinco Ranch when his leg didn’t give way after being grounded while trying to avoid a defenders leaving him with a torn ACL. For precautionary reasons, He was held out of the spring game; though he’s a 100 percent and feels great, Coach Hammock didn’t want to chance it.
Many would agree that Davis, who has committed to Texas A&M is pretty healthy by way of helping the Golden Eagles Track team to a third place finish in the 4×100 and the 4×200 Meter Relay at the UIL State Track and Field Finals this month.
Matt Davis Klein Forest Quarterback said, “We had a lot of injuries during track season. Our second and fourth leg on the 4×100 Meter Relay went down with injuries. We never assembled a relay until district. So to finish third at state was a great accomplishment.”
“When he was in rehab, they said coach he’s three months ahead of schedule and I said what puts him three months ahead of schedule and they said how do you know he’s a good athlete and I said it’s obvious and they said it’s the same thing in rehab it’s obvious,” said Coach Kenny Hammock. “He works hard and he’s a real good athlete and I think that showed being on a team that ran 40.9 in the 4×100 at the UIL State Track and Meet.”
The defensive line has a chance to be special, led by 6’3 265 pound sophomore defensive end Tyree Gray who is being recruited heavily. Gray is big agile with good movement, runs a 4.7 in the forty and also shared time in the backfield on offense, carrying the ball and blocking. Others on defense that had a good show cause were Farrell Jones at LB, Ross Jackson, Cameron Evans, Anthony Austin both at Corner, Michael Crawford, Deshawn Townsend, Abraham Daodu DL and all are 6’2” 250 pounds are more.
“The good thing is we’ve had good weather this spring, the kids are having fun,” said Coach Hammock. “We’re just getting back to the way the game was invented to be played. Play both sides of the ball and have fun. It’s been a good spring and rewarding.”
Corner back Cameron Evans had an impressive outing, intercepting a pass in the end zone and returning it 60 sixty yards to the 35 yard line of the white team.
