Cypress Fairbanks – With the district race starting after one week of preseason, it really helps to be on a roll.
Cy-Creek Cougars Quarterback Chucky Keeton had a hand in four touchdowns to lead his team passed Cy-Falls 35-22 Friday night at Pridgeon Stadium. With the win the Cougars stay on track to their hopes of winning a third consecutive district title while improving to (2-1,2-0).
Two short Troy Mitchell punts gave Cy-Creek great field position at their 48.
The first six minutes of the first quarter dictated a defensive struggle before Devan Demas caught a short pass from Keeton in the flats on the left side line and turned it into a 51 yard touchdown scamper to put the Cougars on the scoreboard with 5:29 to go in the first quarter, 7-0.
“Well I had a great lane on the outside, I seen them coming on the outside. I wanted to make a cut but I thought I more speed on the outside (51 yard touchdown catch and run). It feels good to win, Cy-Falls there a good team and have good players on their team. I think both us will advance to the playoffs,”said Devan Demas Cy-Creek’s Running Back.
Backup running back Demas has been a plus for the Cougars stepping in for injured district leading rusher Jermichael Selders.
The Cougars forced a another punt to setup their second short drive that covered 48 yards in 7 plays, capped by a 32 yard Chucky Keeton keeper to stake out an early 14-0 lead with 1:25 to go in the first quarter.
Keeton was superb completing 12 of 20 for 221 yards and 80 yards on the ground.
“It’s a great win, Cy-Falls is a really good team and I think this was one of the biggest steps we had so far and we just showed our heart and fight tonight. As a team we all have one goal and really that’s win each week but we’re looking for this 3 peat, we’re looking for this district championship and above that we’re looking to go deep in the state playoffs,” said Cy-Creek’s Quarterback Chucky Keeton.
On the Eagles next possession Jacori Warrick return the kickoff 41 yards from the end zone. Seven plays later Gratian Gladney took a 12 yard pass in for the score. Cy-Falls was successful on the two conversion after lining up in a swinging gate formation and snapping the ball directly to Jake Twardowski who took it in from 3 yards out, surprising the Cougars while trimming the lead 14-8.
The Cougars responded quickly with a 13 play 77 yard drive finished off on Keeton’s 16 yard keeper to cushion the lead 21-8.
With 5:29 to go in the half Troy Mitchell hooked up with Isaiah White for a 13 yard touchdown to bring the Eagles back within 6, 21-15.
“The first half looked like a track meet running up and down the field so I’m really proud of our defense making some great adjustments there and secondly I thought our running back woke up. Chucky Keeton continues to be the catalyst for our team. We caught the ball better and we ran blocked a little bit better, so we’re getting better,” said Greg McCaig Cy-Creek’s Coach.
Keeton then found Will Chenoweth for an 18 yard score with seconds to go before halftime to put the Cougars up 28-22.
The Eagles (2-1, 1-1) were led Jr. Quarterback Mitchell who piled up 275 yards passing and three touchdowns.
“Yea it makes it tough a lot of the adjustments and personnel switches and the schematic moves we would make. What it does is it makes you be real careful about what you are running. With that being said this is what they put out in front of us we got to go play. I think the adjustments the defense made in the second half. We changed some things the second half and they didn’t score,” said Greg McCaig Cy-Creek’s Coach.
