Defense took form early as Cams blocks Evans shot to end Tornados season
Katy – Quevin Cams blocked Michael Evans desperation shot with no time left to give the La Marque Cougars a 58-56 defeat of district and arch rival Galveston Ball in the Class 4A Region III Finals on Saturday at the Merrell Center.
“It was the biggest block of my life,” said Cams.
The Cougars (33-4) avenges two early season losses to the Tornados.
Defense set the tone early as Ball controlled the inside with double digit blocks as the Cougars used their quickness to force 16 steals.
A long uncontested 3-pointer by Julien Lewis who led the Cougars in scoring with 29 points to give La Marque a 31-29 lead as the buzzer sounded for break. Cams added a monster performance with 15 points, 17 rebounds and 5 block shots.
Cutting down the nets, as Galveston did after their previous victory over La Marque at the University of Houston in the last meeting didn’t seemed to bother the Cougars much.
There was no let down in the second half, The Cougars charged out of the locker room and kept the pressure on the Tors.
Ball (33-5) had trouble finding their rhythm tonight but most of that had something to do with the Cougars. Evans poured in 19 points for Ball along with eight blocks while Petteway chipped in 14.
The Cougars were much more focused this time around while staying with their game plan of boxing out and limiting the Tors post players Evans and Terran Petteway to very few offensive rebounds most of the night.
“We did a great job of giving them one shot and out,” said La Marque Coach Cedric Mason.
