Despite the size and pressure of the Redskins, it never mattered to quarterback Dean Haveman who connected with several different Cub receivers on the evening.
Dean Haveman threw a pair of touchdowns and got a strong defensive effort to help send the third-ranked Brenham Cubs passed the Lamar Redskins 21-10 at Delmar Stadium on Friday night.
Haveman had touchdown tosses of 22 and 11 yards, both to standout receiver Tre’mund Moore, who finished with nine receptions for 171 yards. The bad news is, losing RB Troy Green to a severe deep shin bruise which was caused by a helmet to his leg during the third quarter of play. A 319 total yard effort paved the way, as Haveman carved up the Redskins secondary, going 18 of 29 for 238 yards and no interceptions.
“Brenham’s a great team, they have great people, great tradition and they played hard, and we played hard. They played well especially their QB and we made too many mistakes,” said Tom Nolen, Lamar’s coach. Their defense is good, they have three guys going to A&M or Texas, but we were real generous to them with the turnovers.”
Some of the Lamar’s best drives were spoiled by turnovers. It took London Kirby one play to go deep down inside Cub’s territory, after breaking the first carry run of the game 55 yards down to the 12 yard line, but three plays later, defensive back Darrion Johnson intercepted Darrell Colbert at the three yard line.
“We worked hard at practice all week but Brenham is a good team and we knew it would be hard,” said Lamar’s RB London Kirby.
Daniel Lopez gave Lamar great field possession at the Cubs 23, after returning a punt from the 50 yard line. But again, a stalled drive due to a couple of incomplete passes forced a 27 yard field goal from Max Peddie, to give the Redskins an early lead, 3-0 with 4:27 to go in the first quarter.
Brenham (3-0) went ahead as they responded with a five play 75 yard drive. Moore worked himself open over the middle, catching the ball down field at the three yard line where he wrestled his way past safety John Bonney to get in the end zone for the TD. That left the score 6-3, in favor of the Cubs after Jordan Braun’s extra point try fail.
“The thing that I did like was that we bent but we didn’t break, we gave up a touchdown at the end of the third quarter,” said Brenham’s coach, Glen West. We had our backs to the wall and we stepped up and made a play, I’m proud of them for that. We’re happy with the win but we got to get better. We made a ton of mistakes and we got to get better. We’re very athletic; we’re playing hard and making a lot of plays.
Lamar (1-2) never had much of a problem moving the ball, the frustration was sustaining a drive, but, dropped passes, penalties, and turnovers kept them playing second fiddle. The Cubs executed another long drive before halftime, marching 80 yards in nine plays as fans watched Moore snag an 11 yard TD reception, his second of the night and Braun drilled a 22 yard field goal with 57.4 seconds to go, capping the first half scoring.
Finally, an 80 yard drive that only took four plays, as Redskin’s running back Bradley Ward burst up the middle of the Cubs defense and out ran the secondary for a 59 yard TD run to the end zone, trimming the lead, 15-10. Kirby concluded his day, rushing for 125 yards on 20 carries, Ward picked up 93 yards on nine attempts.
After gaining the momentum, another Redskin drive ended in disaster after reaching the Brenham’s 23 yard line. Colbert was sacked by Jesse Baker, causing him to fumble and loose possession of the ball at the 28.
Two final blows put the nail in the coffin for the Redskins when Ward fumbled at the 17 yard line in their territory. Brenham then needed three plays for Klartel Claridy to go in from three yards out to put the game out of reach.
