Eagles find the end zone nine times
Arlington – Last year DeSoto hosted the Florida vs. Texas Showcase and was the lone Texas team to win against what some believe is the best state for skill position players. The game was decided in double overtime, a (42-41) defeat of Miramar (Fla).
The Eagles of DeSoto made it 2 of 2 in out of state competition by demolishing Frederick Douglas (Oklahoma City, OK) 63-0 in the Kirk Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic in the third of four games played at Cowboy Stadium Monday night.
“It was a good win for us tonight, but we played sloppy a little bit, the special team with penalties, other than that the kids played well and executed well throughout the ball game,” said Claude Mathis, DeSoto’s Coach, a lot people think we can’t pass, but we can, we just do what the defense gives us. Our defense missed the shutout last week but they got it this week.
Frederick Douglas’ Diontay Washington fumbled on the first play of the game, giving possession to the Eagles at the 49. From there, DeSoto built a 35 point deficit in the first half and never looked back. Anything that could have gone wrong for Douglas did so. Penalties took a toll and when that wasn’t the problem, the Eagles consistently made sure nothing would work out.
“WOW, that’s what I said when I saw them on film and that’s the same thing I said today,” said Frederick Douglass coach, Jabbar Juluke. First of all everybody thinks that we are last year’s team and we’re not. We have a lot of kids that are inexperienced; they have to grow their way into it. This want make or break our season. I wish we would have had a better fight, a better show. Sometimes you have days like this.”
Stalled drives steaming from mistakes, fumbles, and penalties were just part of a disastrous night for Trojans.
The Eagles setup at their 49 and found the end zone four plays later when QB Raheem Wilson scored on a keeper from eight yards out. On DeSoto’s next series, Ridge Jones turned a short pass into a 40 yard TD catch.
“I think we came out and performed pretty well,” said DeSoto’s RB, Dontre Wilson, we still made some mistakes that can be fixed. We made minor mistakes that can be fixed. Our defense stepped up a lot; they forced many three and outs. They gave us many opportunities to put points on the board.”
For the small 4A School with an attendance of 495 students, according to Oklahoma, would classify as a 2A here in Texas. The Trojans were simply over matched by a very talented Eagle squad.
Cedar Hill/Denton Guyer
In the fourth and final game at Cowboy Stadium, Guyer fell to rival Cedar Hill, 24-21. Four Turnovers through the first three quarters caught up to the young Wildcats.
