DeSoto searches for more in 2010

Eagle season may lie
in the hands of Polite

DeSoto High School Football team has high hopes for the 2010 season. The Eagles are expected be one of the early favorite to battle for a state championship.
I was able to catch up with DeSoto’s Head Coach Claude Mathis at the UIL Track & Field State Championship in Austin, Tx. He brought me up to date on the Eagles upcoming season as well as the kickoff Classic to held in DeSoto.
“Our passing is going to be our strength until we get our offensive line going once we get that going I think we can jell,” said DeSoto’s Coach Mathis.
This is what Coach Mathis shared with me. “The strength of our team will be offense. We have all of guys coming back on offense except for three interior guys. We have our skill position players and Ryan Polite who is the trigger guy, he takes a lot of pressure off of us,” said Coach Mathis.
Polite, a star studded QB who passed for 4,060 yards and 39 touchdowns last season is one of the top recruits in the state. He will have a couple of receivers to look to, including Arlington Bowie transfer Cameron White who should take some pressure off David Porter a 1,000 yard receiver last year. More help may come from TB Delvin Rushing.
Marcus Hutchins will lead the offensive line as more support is expected from Jr. Chris Riser the youth.
“Defense is going to be young but we’re going to be fast and quick. They’ve done some great things this spring. Right now we just got to keep it going,” said Coach Mathis.
Returners Michael Richards, Defensive End a Texas commit and Jr. Linebacker Alex Lyons will be expected to carry the load.
“Defensively that’s where my concerns are right now. We have some young guys back there, we’ll take some bumps and bruises,” said Coach Mathis.
The Florida/Texas High School Football Classic should be one the most interesting early season kick off classics of any in the nation. The games are set for week two of the season. Friday Sept. 10th defending class 5A Division II state champion Abilene will face defending Class 2A Cocoa at 7:30 p.m. Dension will play Belle Glades Central on Saturday at 11 a.m., Miami Central will meet class 3A Dallas Madison at 3 p.m. and DeSoto will capped the evening against Miramar at 7 p.m. The event was made possible through C&B National Sports Marketing Group.
