Eagles jumped out 21-0 in the second quarter, on its way to victory

Humble – Knowing the Mustangs Hadn’t fared well against teams with dual threat Quarterbacks, Atascocita’s Quarterback Greg Campbell followed Coach Craig Stump’s game plan, using timely passing and scrambling to gain an advantage.
Campbell rushed for a game-high 235 yards and had a hand in three touchdowns to help Atascocita nail down second place in district 13-5A by defeating Kingwood 28-17 on Friday night at Turner Stadium.
With the win, the Eagles stand alone in second place with two games left; in one of the state’s most balanced districts.
“It doesn’t matter who you play now, its October,” Atascocita’s coach Craig Stump said.  “As the season goes on expectations get higher and they all get harder. It’s a big win.  It puts us 5-1 in district and that’s where we want to be.”
Campbell’s quick, shifty moves, stutter steps, and speed proved too much for Kingwood’s defense. Most of his damage came on the ground, carrying 24 times for 235 yards and two touchdowns and completed 10-of-16 passes with an interception and 157 yards and a touchdown.
“We knew we had to come out and jump on them because they run the ball a lot and control the clock,” explained Eagles quarterback Campbell.  “We knew we had to score to win this game.  We knew they’ve had trouble facing quarterbacks who pass and run.  We had a game plan coming into the game.”
Just when Atascocita (7-1, 5-1) looked as if it would run away with the game leading 21-0 with 11:38 to go in the second quarter, Kingwood posted 10 unanswered points to trim the lead after piecing together a 71-yard drive that was highlighted by a screen pass to running back Griffin Lay, who took the ball to the 13-yard line where a roughing the passer penalty followed, moving the ball to the six-yard line where Lay finished the drive, running up the middle to the end zone.
“We were up 21-0 last year but they came back,” added Stump.  “This team understands it takes a whole game.  We’ve been in everything you can imagine, coming from behind, overtime and kicked a field goal to win a game.”
Kicker Nathan Walker’s 31-yard field goal was a result of a 54-yard drive that watched tailback Sewo Olonilua carry the ball seven consecutive times for 39 yards.
On the opening kickoff, Atascocita marched 67-yards in 10-plays to grab a 7-0 lead on Campbell’s nifty 10-yard scoring run in which he tight-roped the side line, evading Mustang defenders.
Kingwood’s first two possessions stalled out.  Quarterback Logan Clift’s screen pass was incomplete after Lay fell to the turf and a fake punt failed when up-back Ethan Powell was wrapped up at the 49 yard line for no gain; resulting in a turnover on downs.
Sustaining drives, mistakes and penalties worked against Kingwood.  But the opportunities showed itself several times.
“Atascocita did a great job,” says Kingwood coach Barry Campbell.  “They got after us and we made too many mistakes.  We didn’t capitalize when we needed to. They played a hell of a game and all the credit goes to them.  We had opportunities to stop them but we didn’t. They put us in a big hole down 21-0.  It was too much to overcome.”
The Mustangs (6-3, 4-3) received the ball at the 40-yard line to begin the second half after a late hit was assessed against the Eagles.  However, a holding call, delay of game, and a dropped pass quickly suffocated the drive.
Late in the third quarter, Kingwood grabbed the momentum, trimming the lead to 11-points, when Josh McPherson scooted 76-yards on the kickoff return down at the Eagles’ seven-yard line. A few plays later Olonilua’s one-yard plunge made the score 28-17 after Walker’s extra point kick.
That would be as close as the Mustangs would come as Atascocita added a field goal to pad its score, 31-17 with 5:31 left.
