Arlington – The Bulldogs overcame losses to East Texas rivals Tyler Chapel Hill 46-14 who lost in the Class 3A Division I title game and Class 4A Nacogdoches 41-20 early in the season, yet and still regained their focus of what mattered most.
Anthony Morgan threw four first half touchdowns while leading Carthage pass Coldspring 47-22 to collect their third consecutive Class 3A Division II State Title Friday night at Cowboy Stadium. With the win that gives district 16-3A a sweep of both titles.  Henderson won the Class 3A Division I title last week by defeating Chapel Hill 28-21, another East Texas Foe.
A 49-37 victory over the Celina Bobcats in 2008 started this dynasty of championships. Then Carthage went on the defeat Graham 13-12 in ’09 for back to back titles.
Carthage (14-2) got all the points it would need in the first half.  Morgan connected with Jalen Claiborne and Cortlyn Ware twice in the first half.  Ware took an 85 yard catch to the house with 4:35 to go in the first quarter and followed up with a 32 yard touchdown reception.  Claiborne caught a 13 yarder and a 31 yarder with 1:23 to go before intermission to move out to a 30-16 lead.
“It’s unbelievable, it’s a surreal feeling right now, what a beautiful place and what a way to end these seniors career (54-4), 10-0 as freshmen, 14-2 as Sophomores and 16-0 as seniors and 14-2 as seniors,” said Carthage Coach Scott Surratt.
Morgan the offensive Most Valuable Player finished his night out going 17-of-24 for 392 yards and six touchdowns also setting a school record for most touchdowns in a game.  Ware caught five pass for 176 yards while Claiborne grabbed six receptions for 163 yards.
“I knew all week that we were going to come out and have a good game and throw it all over, Coach Surratt putting it in my head.  I had the best game of my life and I went out just like that,” said Anthony Morgan Carthage’s Quarterback.
On the next possession Alfred Scott’s 10 yard touchdown pass to Caleb Shelly cut the lead to eight and gave Coldspring the momentum going into halftime, down 30-22.
“We made here with all the heart we could get.  We were down by the third quarter but as you see we never quit that’s what I love about this 2010 team,” said CJ Duenas Coldspring OL/DT We never quit, no matter what the circumstances is.  We always got heart.”
In the second half is when things fell apart for Coldspring but escalated for the Bulldogs.  The Trojans could never come up with the one big play needed to the match the triple threat of Claiborne, Morgan and Ware.
“We actually came together as a team after Kirbyville. We faced a lot of adversity with our Coach’s dad passing away,” said Caleb Shelly Coldspring Tight end.
Texas commit LB Kendall Thompson led the Dawgs defense with 9 tackles and earned the Defensive Most Valuable Player Award.
“It’s unbelievable.  We played a good game all over the field, offensively and defensively we tried to get them off the field.  We had a virus going around during the week but we played through it, played all four quarter and we are the state championship,” said Carthage Middle Linebacker Kendall Thompson.
Carthage scored on its first two drives of the third quarter to open up a 44-22 lead when Morgan came out of the locker room red  hot, finding Claiborne and Ware again for 57 and 39 yard strikes respectfully.
“People always ask say what’s your favorite ring, (speaking to coach about their three straight championship rings) we always say the next one.  He (Quarterback Anthony Morgan, 6 TDs) set a school record tonight.  We knew they were going to stack the run and felt like we would have a big passing game and we did,” said Carthage Coach Scott Surratt.
