Georgetown bring out big bats

Eagles use big innings
to sweep aside Cy-Ridge

Ragan Pope’s RBI double to left field scored Jeremy Batts to give the Eagles the go ahead run.
The Georgetown Eagles advanced to the next round of the Class 5A Region II playoffs after lashing the Cy-Ridge Rams14-4 Friday night at Cy-Ridge. The Eagles swept Cy-Ridge two games to none. With the win the Eagles will face the winner of Klein Collins/Lufkin next week.
The Eagles wasted no time jumping on struggling Pitcher Matt Roberts. Center fielder Todd Ritchie led off with a walk after being hit by a pitch, then stole second. Roberts issued back to back walks to Michael Guerrero and Cory Knebel. Cleanup Hitter Zach Taylor made Roberts pay, crushing a ball deep over the left field fence to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
“We just couldn’t throw any strikes. We had our ace on the mound but he struggled a little bit lately and it wasn’t his night. I was thinking about during the game as it got away from us it’s disappointing obviously but in a few days we’ll feel better about the season. We’ve played in a lot of big games,” said Cy-Ridge’s Coach Mark Elliott.
The Rams couldn’t find any pitching to slow down the Eagles offense.
“I saw a pitch on the outside half of the plate and I just tried to drive it down the left field line, good things happen,” said Georgetown’s Right Fielder Ragan Pope.
The top of the fourth prove to be a nightmare inning for Cy-Ridge. Four straight runs were walked home upping the lead 9-0. The inning started with Roberts walking Kyle Davis, A.J. Hermanson’s bunt single followed by another walk to Ritchie loading the bases. Guerrero walked to first forcing home a run. That led to Roberts being relieved.
“Our kids came out in a pretty hostile environment; it kind of fired them up. We got the two walks, a hit by a pitch and our clean up hitter kid puts one over the fence, at four to nothing you feel pretty good,” said Georgetown’s Coach Danny Wallace.
Things got worst as Dylan Zarrosky moved from short stop to the mound. Zarrosky surrendered three bases loaded walks before being lifted in favor of Cody Guajardo who moved from third to pitch while Zarrosky moved back to Short Stop.
Georgetown continued there onslaught adding five more runs.
“I knew when the catcher went up to the pitcher I knew he was going to throw me a strike he had been struggling. So I just tried to put a good swing on it,” said Georgetown’s Short Stop Zack Taylor.
The Rams managed to avoid the shutout coming up with four runs but not enough to avoid the ten run mercy rule after the bottom of the fifth inning.
K. Bradley led off the bottom of the fifth with a single up the middle. In limited action Taylor Davis made the most of his at bat, driving home a two run shot to left. Two batters later Self homered over the right field fence and Sealy’s RBI single gave the Rams four runs before Roberts struck out to end the game.
