Houston Area bring out best in Lopez Classic

Great weather set the
stage for meet records to fall

The two day event was smothered by great weather. Overcast skies, a slight breeze, party sunny at 70 to 75 degrees.
Athletes and fans piled the Wendel D. Ley Stadium located on the Rice Campus to get a glimpse of some early season track & Field competition.
The 28th Annual Victor Lopez Classic brought out some of the best the area has to offer. Some were returning lettermen along with others that were seeing their first action at the classic.
Kingwood Park’s Brett Parker set a couple of meet records, running the 400 Meter Run in 47.73 and finishing the 4x 400 Meter Relay in 3:14.49. “We just posted the best time in the state (speaking of their record time in the 4x 400 Meter Relay Run) and we came out here showing that we could run with everybody,” said Brett Parker.
Double winners on the day in girls’ action, Christy Udoh who won the 200 Meter Dash and helped Westbury win the 4x 100 Meter Relay. Mayungbe Blessing of Lamar took the 400 Meter Dash while helping the redskins to a win in the 4x 400 Meter Relay. Sophie Blake of Kingwood finished first in both the 1,500 and the 3,000 Meter Run.
“I definitely want to be at the state meet this year. I’m not peaking right now, I’m kind of happy about ware I’m at. I’d like to be a little bit faster,” said College Park’s Distance Runner Brian Gohlke.
Dulles Junior Sheroid Evans looked sharp and relaxed in victory. “I haven’t seen him since state, last year. (Speaking of last year’s 200 meter dash Champion DeAndre White) I didn’t do as well because I was tired from running the 400 but I was ready for it this time,” said Dulles Sheroid Evans
In boys’ action, DeAndre White took first in the long jump while helping North Shore to a victory in the 4x 200 Meter Relay. Evans of Dulles set a meet record while avenging a last year loss to White, winning the 200 along with the 100 Meter Dash. Brett Parker won the 400 Meter Dash and helped Kingwood Park to victory in the 4x 400 Meter Relay.
“I knew they were coming after me (Speaking about her short lead during the 200 meter run) but I wasn’t going to let that happen. I had too many people out to watch me today and I felt like I’ve worked too hard to see myself defeated. So I came out here, ran my race and finished first,” said Westbury’s Christy Udoh.
