Katy and Westfield top Houston Area High School Football Rankings
Most coaches who are looking to building a successful program knows one thing for sure. If you want to be the best, playing the best is required. That’s what Mavericks coach Kirk Martin believes.
With that being said, high rankings don’t necessarily help in the midst of a heated battle as the one involving No. 1 Manvel and No. 3 Westfield. As a Matter of fact, it was the Mustangs who avenged last season’s 35-10 loss by defeating Manvel 29-26 on Friday night in Alvin.
Pearland Dawson’s 42-25 loss to Class 5A George Ranch was the only other top-ten 6A team to go down in week zero.
In other top 10 ranked teams, No. 2 Katy blanked kingwood 46-0 and now enters the top spot after Manvel’s loss. The Tigers could hold that place for the remainder of the season without a threat left on its schedule.
No. 4 and 5, North Shore and Klein Collins posted big wins by crushing Clear Springs 49-13 and Cy-Woods 62-21 respectfully.
Class 5A teams, No. 7 Brenham and No. 5 Ridge Point both loss to 6A opponents. Houston Lamar took out the Cubs 35-14 and Clear Creek knocked off Ridge Point 34-28.
Four, 4A top-ten teams dropped games. Stafford shocked No. 2 East Bernard 14-7, No. 3 El Campo loss to Gregory-Portland, 34-33, No. 4 La Marque fell to arch rival Galveston Ball, 21-0, and Needville waltzed No. 10 Hempstead 54-7.
