Euless Trinity upsets No. 3 De La Salle
The weekend not only kicked off week zero in high school football across the nation, but it also showed the rising and falling of teams in Ossports 2015 Preseason National High School Football Top 25 Rankings.
Our No. 1 team (Fort Lauderdale) St. Thomas Aquinas had a decent showing Friday evening, rolling past a subpar Miami Booker T. Washington team 35-3. The win ended the Tornadoes’ 41 game win streak which included three consecutive 4A titles.
However, the Raiders were not impressive enough to whole down the top spot as it fell to No. 4.
In the week before, St. Thomas Aquinas struggled against unranked Dillard in a game which does not count against either team’s record.
The biggest upset in week zero watched No. 35 Euless Trinity upset No. 3 De La Salle (Concord, Ca,) 26-21. Trinity known for its size, strength and power ground-game, wore down De La Salle. The Spartans last effort came down to the final 30 seconds and a failed tip pass from QB Anthony Sweeney, as fans watched Trojan’s QB Tyler Natee take a knee to run the clock out.
The Spartans, during a 12-season period, held a 151-game winning streak and packs a reputation of one of the most storied high school programs in the nation. The streak ended in 2004. In recent years, De La Salle is 2-5 in out-of-state games.
No. 5 DeSoto took it on the chin in a 46-26 loss to rival Arlington Martin. After four loses to the Eagles, Martin, who best four-time champion Allen in last week’s scrimmage, played with avenges, scoring early and often to get the win over the Eagles.
Other teams on the rise with impressive wins included Archer, DeMatha, and Bishop Gorman. DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD) routed Miami Central, 38-14, Archer (Lawrenceville, Ga.) defeated Peachtree Ridge, 26-10 and (Las Vegas) Bishop Gorman zipped past Chandler (Ariz.), 35-14.
