Overtime thriller comes down to
Carreon’s 19 yard field goal
The Nacogdoches Dragons knew it had to win by more than seven points to get into the playoffs while Jacksonville needed a victory to gain a playoff berth.
Both teams set a national record playing 12 overtimes with the Jacksonville Indians (7-2, 5-1) coming away with a 84-81 victory Friday night in a game that lasted more than five hours.
The game was tied 28-28 at the end of regulation.
With the game tied in overtime, Nacogdoches (3-6, 2-4) had chances to win but in order to keep their playoff hopes alive they either kneeled instead of attempting a game winning extra point and even threw the ball way at times to intentionally keep the game going.
In the 12th overtime the Dragons turned the ball over on a fumble opening door for Jacksonville to take possession while getting in position to kick a game winning 19 yard field goal curtsey of Rodrigo Carreon.
