The Tigers built a 49-0 halftime lead and never looked back
The only thing that could stop the onslaught of the Katy Tigers was watching the first and second half end.
“We were outmatched,” Friendswood offensive coordinator Nathan Roar said.”
A break at halftime was well worth it for the Mustangs and its fans as Katy ran out to a 49-0 lead and its defense recorded its ninth shutout of the season, crushing Friendswood 66-0 in the 6A Division II Region III Semifinals on Saturday at NRG Park.
The win pushed the Tigers (13-0) one step closer to a possible rematch of last year’s regional final against Manvel, who will take on Strait Jesuit at 8:00 P.M. tonight at NRG Park.
For Friendswood fans, it was not the type of game it imagined for the Mustangs. The end of the game couldn’t arrive soon enough after facing the onslaught of the Tigers.
The Tigers defense was relentless stopping Friendswood behind the line of scrimmage 10 times alone in the first half and surrendered 89 total yards on the afternoon.
“We knew that things had to go very much in our direction to have a shot at all,” Roar explained. But you learn how to compete against better athletes and teams like this in the future.”
A steady rush of the Tigers defense featured junior defensive linemen Cory Bethley, sophomore Michael Matus defensive back Travis Whillock, and junior linebacker Breydon Boyd, who made it nearly impossible for the Mustangs to get anything going on the ground or through the air.
“I thought it was a good effort on both sides of the ball,” says Tigers coach Gary Joseph. “The kicking game did extremely well.”
Katy piled up 532 total yards of offense and scored 28 first quarter point and 21 in the second to jump out to a 49-0 halftime lead.
Katy’s quarterback Doiron Garrett was 9-of-10 with 201 yards and three touchdowns. Kyle Porter rushed 12 times for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Receivers JC Angulo and Tony Mullins had big contributions with three catches for 103 yards, two touchdowns and six for 98 and one touchdown respectfully.
“The kids prepared well,” Joseph said.  “We knew Friendswood was dangerous.”
Friendswood (8-5) begin its Black Friday by giving Katy an early gift when it fumbled on the opening kickoff and lost possession at its 17-yard line. The recovery was returned to the 13.
Coach Joseph admitted, there is no time to rest on last week’s accomplishments.
“Our kids understand that we’ll have to be better next week than we are this week,” said Joseph.  “That’s the goal going in each week.”
Running back Kyle Porter, who returned from an unknown injury, had all the carries on the four-play scoring drive. The one-yard touchdown run made the score 7-0 after Kris Perez extra point kick, with 10:07 left in the first quarter.
Four different Tigers scored touchdowns including Porter, who accounted for (3), covering 1, 3 and 28. Junior receiver JC Angulo caught two, 78 and 18, receiver Tony Mullins 39, and Glass scored from 16 yards out to cap the first half scoring.
It was more of the same In the third quarter. Katy scored a pair touchdowns before reserves entered the game with 6:20 seconds left in the third quarter.
Glass gave the Tigers 56-0 lead when broke through the middle of Friendswood defense and raced to the end zone with 11:45 to go in the third quarter.
The Tigers finally called the cats off after Collin wilder’s 68-yard punt return touchdown with 10:10 left in the third quarter.
