Klein Forest Golden Eagles rolled pass the Aldine Mustangs 49-22 Friday night at Klein Memorial Stadium.
The Eagles offense have yet to lose it’s luster putting up almost 50 points a contest.
Both teams came in with undefeated records at 2-0 and something to prove.
The two school districts are divided by streets making them natural rivals. Many of the kids know each other, some even living in the same neighborhoods.
The Eagles have an arsenal of weapons led by their sophomore quarterback Matt Davis who has the ability to carry a team on his back.
Coach Hammock and the Golden Eagles are off to a great start at 3-0. They have victories over Dallas Carter, Langham Creek and Aldine. The Eagles possess the athletes that can find the end zone from anywhere on the field. They have scored 160 points in three games. They have a number of players they can call on. To name a few, Michael Buchanan, Matthew Cabble, Matt Davis, Cory Idlebird, Damian Payne and Lewis Williams, stopping these Eagles is a task in itself.
Their defense didnbt look to shabby holding a talented Aldine squad to 22 points, who boast two division one running backs in Wesley Vincent and Donte Williams not to mention a stellar quarterback in Jordan Moore with the ability to find two receivers Eric Gray and George Moore that stand in at 6’4, most would consider this no easy task.
After a 19 yard completion to Eric Gray the Mustangs were four and out. Gray, the son of former Aldine standout, Eric Gray who led Aldine to a national title in 1990 is one of the reasons for the Mustangs early success.
Klein Forest first drive started at the 28 yard line. Davis hit Cabble for a four yard gain, setting up third down and six from the 32 yard line. Davis, then blasted through the Mustangs defense for a 68 yard highlight reel touchdown run. He darted up the middle, loss two Mustang defenders on a head fake and race down the left sideline for the score.
Aldine’s next drive stalled forcing them to punt.
A 24 yard touchdown run by Idlebird increase the Eagles lead. Davis completed the two point conversion to give the Golden Eagles a 15-0 lead.
The Mustangs got it in gear, driving 79 yards cutting the lead 15-7 on Wesley Vincent’s 18 yard touchdown run straight up the middle of the field. The drive was aided by a roughing the kicker penalty, called against the Eagle’s Simon Morgan.
bI thought we played kind of sloppy, I think Aldine played real hard and their a real good team.b bTheir going to do well in their district.b bWe got to execute better, we didnbt handle ourselves well early,b said Klein Forest Head Coach Hammock.
With great field position at their 49 yard line Klein Forest wasted little time padding their lead. Backup quarterback Lewis Williams entered the game. He found running room, scrambling down to the 37 yard line of Aldine after the catch and run. A personal foul charged to the Mustangs pushed the ball down to the 22 yard line where Decker nailed a 32 yard field goal.
Penalties and miscues were the Mustangs enemy. They had trouble sustaining drives when they needed it most. One reason for that was the Golden Eagles defense.
The Mustangs pulled within 4 (18-14) before halftime on Moore’s beautiful 76 yard touchdown strike to ObRyran Wiley. He caught the ball in stride with two Eagle defenders near him and out ran them untouched to the end zone.
The Golden Eagles responded with a 70 yard drive capped with 39 yard touchdown run by Davis and completed a two conversion. Dashing any hopes the Mustangs may have had of closing in or taking the lead.
Davis led all rushers with a 146 yards on 16 carries
With 2:20 to go before the half, The Mustangs drive was snuffed out by an interception coming at the hands of Harvey Williams.
“I think we came out reading the newspapers, we kind of had the big head.” “Aldine is a good team and they knew that and they came after us.” “We had an X on our chest and they were coming after us.” “But then I looked at the scoreboard and we had 26 points at halftime, said Klein Forest Head Coach Hammock.
Klein Forest came out of intermission fired up; driving 77 yards to grab a 15 point lead 29-14.
Another costly mistake by the Mustangs allowed the Eagles to add to their lead, an 18 yard field goal. On 4th down Klein Forest lined up to punt but the Mustangs were charge with off sides giving the Eagles a first down in Aldinebs territory.
The Golden Eagles will be off this week and will look to district play the following.
