North Shore use team effort to grab its fourth straight region III title
Humble – The competition may be gaining ground on North Shore Boys Track & Field Team, but what’s left in the tank ultimately pieced together points compiled from a team effort which led the Mustangs to its fourth consecutive Class 5A Region III Title, by defeating last years’ runner up, Fort Bend Bush 78- 71 on Monday evening at Turner Stadium.
Two days after rain postponed the Region III running events, North Shore placed in two of three relays, combined with some individual events to post its fourth straight title.
The Mustangs finished first in the 4×200 Meter Relay (1:25.11) and third in the 4×100 Meter Relay (41.30).
“This is the most competitive regional meet we’ve had in years,” Mustangs coach Garrett Cross said. We had to tough this out. We went back and forth with Fort Bend Bush, who was really strong. You have to give them a lot of credit. They will be tough to beat at the state meet.
The rest of the Mustangs’ points came from individual performances, including Jomal Wiltz third place finish in the 100 Meter Dash (10.60) and second in the long jump with a (23-01.00). Daniel Shelton took second in the 800 Meter Run (1:53.69), Orlando Garcia was fifth in the 1600 Meter Run (4:24.53); Arno Hamilton took gold in the 110 Hurdles (13.93).
A day for Bush
Fort Bend Bush Boys Track & Field Team returned much of its team from a year ago and flirted with thoughts of winning the region. Despite not winning the region, the Broncos are taking all three of its relays to Austin. They finished first in the 4×100 and took second in both the 200 and 400 Meter Relays.
“Ultimately the relays played a huge role in the team’s overall team success,” added Fort Bend Bush coach Shannon Rideout. With us being able to get three relay teams to state is phenomenal. That’s the goal they had in mind.”
Several Broncos shared in the team’s success, including O’Shea Wilson second place finish in the 200 Meter Dash. Tim Saddler was sixth in the 400 Meter Dash; D’Andre Lewis won the 800 Meter Run.
Other highlights on the evening involved, Morton Ranch sprinter Eli Hall-Thompson, who won the 100 and 200 Meter Dash with times of (10.40) and (20.96). Drevain Young anchored Nimitz winning 4×400 Meter Relay (3:15.14) and took gold in the 400 Meter Dash (47.24). Strake Jesuit’s Robert Ammons won the 1600 and 3200 Meter Run with a time of (4:14.08) and (9:14.38). Port Arthur Memorial’s Jammil Peeples took gold in the 300 Hurdles (37.54) and the long jump (23-02.00)
In field events Deer Park’s Cameron Cornelius won the Shot Put (58-00.00) and finished third in the Discus Throw (154-09).
In girls action
The Lady Broncos stormed through the region spearheaded by sprinting sensation Rushell Harvey who helped her team win the 4×400 Meter Relay along with sweeping the 100 and 200 Meter Dash. Taylor Dotson, Vanessa Egwuatu, Jane Ohanta and Jalana Owens took brawns in the 4×200 Meter Relay (1:39.46).
“When we started off today on the boys and girls side, we faced adversity,” Broncos coach Kerry said. We preach to them, how you are going to respond to it. Once we got over those problems, we came back and finished off the meet. That was one thing we said to the boys, let’s finish the meet no matter what happens.”
Harvey’s electric anchor leg performance in the 4×400 Meter Relay awarded Bush the crown, as she sprinted by Clear Springs Tiffany Terry after a lengthy battle down the stretch, defeating the Chargers 60-54.
Terry’s outing was just as impressive as Harvey’s, picking up double wins in the 400 and 800 Meter Dash which sets her up to compete in three events in Austin at the state UIL Track & Field Meet.
Seven Lakes’ Erica Brown won the 3200 Meter Run and took second in the 1600.
Cypress Springs took gold in the 4×100 and 4×200 Meter Relay.
