Lady Cardinals a true fit, second time around

McElveen’s inside present
gives team boost

The second time around prove to be sweet after a memorable lost in the regional finals last season.
Joslinn Douglas sank four free throws with under a minute to play, to help Del Valle Lady Cardinals defeat the LaMaque Lady Cougars 43-33 on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a double header played at the Campbel Center.
“Well we tried to face guard no.44 (Jaleesa Allen) to just limit her touches because shes something else. We saw her go off against Huntsville in the regional semifinals,” Del Valle’s Coach Angel said.
With the class 4A region III title in hand and a chance to play for a state title, the Cardinals want have to worry about a 3 hour drive to Houston. They will be playing in their backyard.
It was a low scoring affair which was close for most of the game.
Precious Payne’s three pointer at the buzzer gave LaMarque a one point lead,9-8 to end the first quarter.
Two quick layups by Del Valle’s Monique McElveen gave them a 12-9 lead but then a three pointer from the Cougar’s Brianna Lewis knotted the score at 12.
About a minute after, the Cardinals took the air out of the ball from the 4:18 mark until halftime.
McElveen became a force in the third quarter, receiving passes from point guard Douglas down in the paint where she was unstoppable, rebounding and scoring.
Del Valle took control of the tempo making the most of every scoring opportunity.
The Cougars clung to a one to four point lead whenever the score wasn’t knotted, until the fourth quarter.
