Lamar held off Upset minded Chavez 35-18 Saturday afternoon at
Delmar Stadium. Lamar drew first blood when Bram Kohlhausen
hooked up with tight end Matthew Blackmon for a 9 yard strike.
But it didn’t take long for lobos to get in the scoring column. The
lobos drove 88 yards for the touchdown that was capped off with a 4
yard keeper by Andre Kelly to knot the score 7-7. The highlight of the
game also happened on this drive when Lamar’s nose guard
Marshall Hefley chased down Traymond Brown at the 5 yard line.
Brown broke free after catching a pass down the middle of the field.
After each team turned the ball over on downs, Chavez got the ball
back on their 36 yard line. This drive was aided by a pass
interference called on the redskins that pushed the ball inside Lamar
territory at 49 yard line. The lobos settled for a 31 yard field goal after
Andre Kelly was sacked for a loss at the 21 yard line. Chavez took
the 10-7 halftime lead into the locker room.
In the 3rd quarter Joshua Gordon showed why hes being highly
recruited by several colleges, taking a 46 yard pass to the house
which made the score 14-10 with 6:22 left in the 3rd quarter. He also
displayed his atheism, quickness and speed on a few handoffs.
“It’s a big win for us because a lot of people were doubting us
coming into this game because Chavez is such a great opponent.I
worked out on my own during the lay off of Hurricane Ike.I was
ready for this game and so was my team,” said Joshua Gordon.
On the ensuing kickoff Lamar’s kicker Oswald Vargas found an opening, placing the ball in no mans land in lobos territory while Redskin players outraced Chavez Return to the ball to recover the lose ball at the 30 yard line. The mistake
would cost lobos when Kalvin Guyton went in from 7 yards out to
make the score 21-10.
But again the lobos would comeback driving down field with the
running of Mark Cole and a personal foul against the redskins kept
the drive alive. Cole would bring the lobos closer at 21-18 with a 1
yard score and Andre Kelly followed with 2 point conversion.
But the redskins scored two more times to put this game away.
