advance to semifinals
The Mustangs knew that if they got past Atascocita and the Cardinals would defeat Seven Lakes they would have another shot at Bellaire.
Unlike last season’s game, Memorial took game one but was unable to win game two and three. This year they made sure it wouldn’t come to a game three.
The Mustangs took the lead for remainder of the game in the bottom of the 5th. Taylor walked to first, stole second and scored on shortstop Burgess double to leftfield. After Bergmann struck out swinging, Glanzman doubled to leftfield, bring home Burgess to give the Mustangs a 7-5 lead.
Memorial Mustangs defeated the Bellaire Cardinals 8-6 in game two of the best-of-three series in 5A Region III Quarterfinals at Jersey Village. With the win the Mustangs avenge last season’s Quarterfinals loss to the Cardinals while advancing to the Region III Semifinals to face Brazoswood.
A 6-3 comeback victory in game one on Thursday set the stage for the sweep.
The Mustangs used a strong hitting line up that was productive from top to bottom sprinkled with timely pitching.
Cardinal Errors helped Memorial get on the scoreboard early. Nick Bergmann led off the bottom of the second inning with a deep fly to centerfielder where Sean Washington who was unable to hold the ball after starting forward and turning back for the elusive ball. Nick. Glanzman’s sacrifice bunt moved Bergmann to second. Then Sean Horacek hit a slow rolling grounder that fell dead in between the pitcher’s mound and first base. The cardinal’s First Baseman Toller Boardman field the ball and threw a low ball over to first base where pitcher Kyle Chaskins was covering but was unable to corral the ball leaving runners on first and third. Chaskins fanned Ben Carl for the second out of the inning but Boomer White made good on a bases clearing triple to put the Mustangs up 2-0.
In the top of third Bellaire strung together three consecutive hits to cut the lead in half, 2-1 on Kirby Taylor’s double. A wild pitch by Byron Davis that got by the catcher sent Alex Silver home who was on third base, that even the score at 2. Two walks loaded the bases followed by Aaron Hafer being hit by a pitch. That produced the Cardinal’s third run of the inning.
Wayne Taylor and Carter Burgess drew a base on balls. With the hit and run on for the Mustangs, Bergmann took a pitch to the opposite field for a three run homer to help Memorial reclaim the lead 5-3.
Bellaire’s Taylor RBI single to left field scored Matthew Little trimming the Mustangs lead 5-4. Chaskins got on base with a walk to load the bases, Daniel Gerow followed with an RBI sac. Fly to centerfield tying the game at 5.
Memorial added an insurance run on Harris Rome’s double to right, plating White to finish out the scoring.
