First half shootout turns into
Mustangs second half shutout

Defensive End Travis Manning led a second half defensive shutout to help Friendswood overthrow the Montgomery Bears 49-28 at Rice Stadium Saturday night in the Class 4A Division I Region III Finals.
The victory sends the Mustangs to the Class 4A Division I State Semifinals where they will face Austin Lake Travis Saturday at 2 p.m. for the second since 2008. Travis avenged a loss to district rival Cedar Park 21-20 to advance to Saturday’s meeting.
While the defense were making all the stops in the second half, Mustang Quarterback Pete Maetzold used his time wisely registering six touchdowns on the evening, four passing, two on the ground to go along with 396 passing yards including going 18 of 27.
Maetzold have amazed 3,543, 34 touchdowns through the air and 10 interceptions while rushing for 478 with 17 scores on the season. His numbers are more than enough to push him pass previous quarterback Jacob Karam for the school’s single season record.
The Mustangs (13-1) marched 76 yards in eleven plays to get out front with a three yard scoring run by Junior Running back Jonathan Johnson.
Friendswood missed an opportunity to increase the lead to ten when Tyler Dement’s field goal attempt was left of the upright. The momentum shifted quickly to Bears as they drove 80 yards to tie the game at seven on Tyler Bolfing’s 41 yard touchdown strike to Devon Gasaway.
“Our kids competed well all season long and I couldn’t be more proud of them, this is obviously not the way we wanted it to end but you got to give credit to Friendswood they have a heck of a team, they did a great job and they deserve to win today,” said John Bolfing Montgomery Coach.
This one would take the form a track meet in the first half as both teams scored three more times before going to halftime knotted at 28.
In the second half Friendswood scored 21 unanswered points to put the game away.
Montgomery (12-2) came out flat and never got the spark they needed.
Manning and Matt Lewis recorded five sacks for the Mustangs defense. Manning also used his quickness to make a couple tackles for losses.
Johnson led the Mustangs in rushing with 122 on 21 carries and two touchdowns, one rushing and one passing. Matthew Kennemer was on the receiving end of seven catches for 101 yards.
Leroy Dubbins added 116 yards rushing on 19 carries and one touchdown for Montgomery
