Surprises in the Lone Star State high school football rankings
Several huge upsets over the weekend prompted a shake-up in the Ossports Top 25 National High School Football Rankings.
Top-ranked Grayson (GA) dropped a 26-7 decision to No 4. IMG (Bradenton, FL). The Rams got off to a slow start and never recovered while the Ascenders forced four turnovers. Not only did its offense fail to get on track, Grayson was no match for IMG’s potent defense.
In other national action, No. 18 Booker T. Washington slipped passed No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas, 27-23, in a South Florida showdown. With 2:26 left, Hurricanes’ injured sophomore quarterback Daniel Richardson, under a massive rush,  scrambled to his left and found Sherod Johnson, who got one foot inbound to cap an 18-yard touchdown reception which gave Washington the lead for keeps right in front of a 40-minute lightning delay.
The Raiders last effort fell short as it reached the one-yard line when quarterback Jake Allen connected with receiver Trevon Grimes on a slant pattern with under a minute to go. However, it wasn’t enough as the Hurricanes defensive line rushed with a full bliss and forced Allen to throw an interception to end the game and likely putting an end to the Raiders chances of a national title shot while Booker T. Washington keeps its title hopes alive.
For the second consecutive week, Washington has dethroned a nationally ranked team. Last week, the Hurricanes defeated No. 6 American Heritage 27-7.
The internet war between No. 3 Bishop Gorman and No. 5 Cedar Hill started over the summer and ended in a 44-14 lashing of the Longhorns.
I’m not sure who won the internet chat, but the Gael’s running back Biaggio Ali-Walsh, who is the grandson of former boxing legend, the late-great Muhammed Ali, scored three touchdowns while rushing for 198 yards on 18 carries was more than enough to keep Bishop Gorman in the national title picture. This was far from just a simple battle on the field as both teams chatted trash talk over the internet for several weeks leading up the game.
In the Lone Star State, Katy and Lake Travis turned in the biggest surprises. Both began the 2016 season ranked in the two top spots. The top-ranked Tigers watched Westlake’s quarterback Sam Ehlinger pull off big play after play to execute the upset. Ehlinger finished the evening 17-of-27 with 256 passing yards and one touchdown. He tallied 63 rushing yards on 17 carries.  The Chaps entered the season with the No. 4 ranking
Converse Judson, the 10th ranked team,  scored 22 fourth quarter points to shock host No. 2 Austin Lake Travis, 35-28.
