No 18th ranked DeSoto Boys Basketball team shines after knocking off nation’s top ranked Chicago Simeon, Houston Lamar in Class 5A-I Final for first time since 1953

 
The Lamar Redskins (15-0) battled its way to its first state appearance since 1953, by knocking off San Antonio O’Connor 15-7 at the Berger Stadium in Austin on Saturday evening.   The win marks the first time since 1992 that an HISD school has advanced to a title game.  The last, was Yates.  The Redskins will face Allen next Saturday at 8 PM at Cowboy Stadium for the right to bring home Houston ISD’s first title since Yates defeated Odessa Permian, 37-0 in 1985.  The Eagles defeated Hightower, 21-14 for the 2008 Class 5A-Division I crown.
In search of its seventh title, the Katy Tigers earned a spot in the Class 5A division II Finals by over-throwing undefeated Cibolo Steele, 45-33 Saturday afternoon at Floyd Casey Stadium in Baylor.  Running backs Adam Taylor and Rodney Anderson led a viscous ground attack which broke open a tight first half.  Katy is set to take on cedar Hill who got a field goal from Brooks Ralph with three second left, to defeat Austin Westlake 31-28, at four pm Saturday at cowboy Stadium.  
Top ranked DeSoto, who came in as the nation’s No 1 ranked football team nationally, according to Rivals 100, fell to No 6 Allen, 56-34 Saturday night at Ford Stadium in a national telecast. Allen led 21-0 before watching DeSoto scored 14 points entering intermission.
Navasota, the top ranked Class 3A team will meet Gilmer at Cowboy Stadium, Friday at 4 pm. Austin Collins’ 101-yard kick return highlighted the Rattlers victory over Bellville, 24-7.  The Buckeyes are no strangers this late in the season. Friday’s meeting will be its fifth appearance. 
Cedar Park earned its first state appearance, forcing six turnovers and beating Manor 40-14 at Birkelbach Field.  The Timberwolves will have its hands full facing a speedy Lancaster team Friday at 8 pm at Cowboy Stadium.
Georgetown continued its impressive run to the title game by crushing Rouse 42-14 Saturday at Gupton Stadium.  The Eagles will meet Denton Guyer in the Class 4A Division 1 Final, Saturday at noon at Cowboy Stadium.  Guyer knocked off favorite John Tyler in a shootout, 57-53 to gain a berth in the title game.  
 

Texas Basketball shines on national level

 
It took overtime for Fort Bend Travis, ranked No 11 in the ESPN Power 25 to squeak by No 10 Arch Bishop Mitty of California, 56-53 in a show case of nationally ranked teams at Hopson field House Thursday night.  It’s the early going of tough schedule the Tigers will face this season.  They will travel to Kentucky to face two of the state’s top teams and later will head to California for a holiday tournament.
No 18 ranked DeSoto (14-1) upset No 1 Chicago (Simeon) 67-57 on Thursday night at Grand Prairie High School in the second game of a double header on ESPN.  DeSoto’s shooting guard Matt Jones, a Duke signee, led scorers with 23 points
Yates Boys basketball team got a little revenge after last season’s title lost by defeating Dallas Kimball 97-74 in the Dallas vs. Houston Hardwood Classic at Phillips Gym Saturday night.
