Comeback Sunday took full effect in the NFL. Several photo finishes and close encounters served up a power-packed weekend.
Fans throughout the US witnessed the emotional roller coaster of this past weekend’s set of NFL games.
Brett Maher connected on a 50-yard field goal as time expired to give Dallas (1-1) its first win of the season. The Cowboys 17-3 lead faded after halftime. Backup quarterback Cooper Rush worked in place of injured Dak Prescott, and the defense recorded six sacks.
However, the tide turned after the Bengals (0-2) held Dallas scoreless for over 29 minutes while it pasted together a 19-play, 83-yard game-tying drive (17-17), which concluded after Tee Higgins scored with 4:40 left.
Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins staged a 42-37 comeback victory over Baltimore. Tagovailoa’s record-tying six touchdown passes set him in the company of Hall of Famers Bob Griese and Dan Marino, which also accomplished the feat.
Tagovailoa completed 35-of-50 passing attempts for 469 yards and two interceptions. Tyreek Hill had a hand in 11 receptions for 190 yards and two touchdowns, and Jaylen Waddle finished with 11 catches for 171 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The Ravens (1-1) lit up the scoreboard early as Devin Duvernay returned the opening kickoff 103 yards. Lamar Jackson tossed three touchdowns and scored on a 79-yard run. Yet that was not enough to overthrow the Dolphins.
The Raiders (0-2) led Arizona, 23-7 in the fourth quarter but watched Kyler Murray and company win 29-23 in overtime. Hunter Renfrow fumbled a reception when Isaiah Simmons forced the ball loose, wiping out the Raiders’ chance for a field goal attempt.
The Cardinals (1-1) scored on back-to-back possessions to knot the game at 23, forcing overtime. After the Raiders spoiled mishaps, Byron Murphy cashed in on a 59-yard fumble return to ice an improbable comeback. Murray completed 31-of-49 for 277 yards and one interception.
Joe Flacco ended his day 26-of-44 for 307 and four touchdowns. The spectacular day included the Jets’ (1-1) crazy comeback win over the Browns. Flacco’s help came from rookie Garrett Wilson, who caught eight balls for 102 yards and two scores.
Browns (1-1) threaten to run away with the game leading, 30-17 with 2:00 minutes left. After Cade York missed the extra point try, Flacco went to the air finding Corey Davis 66-yards downfield to draw within six points, 30-24, with just over a minute left. Justin Hardee recovered the onside kick to set up Flacco’s 15-yard scoring strike to Wilson with 22 seconds remaining. Greg Zuerlein’s kick made the difference, putting the Jets over the top, 31-30.
