North Shore stays focus,wins title

Dallas Skyline Girls win
9th track title

Austin – With Desoto performing well early on The Mustangs knew they had to do well in every event they participated in. The North Shore Mustangs defeated Desoto Eagles for the Class 5A UIL Track & Field State Championship Saturday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
“I think the kids came in focused and we had a goal to get the three relays on the stand. That’s what we had to do to win and that’s what we got done. My hat’s off to Desoto they’re a very good track team and it was no easy win. For awhile they were perfect in everything they were doing, we were just trying to stay with them,” said North Shore’s Coach Barry Briner.
Desoto got going as soon as the meet begin, winning the 4×100 Meter Relay and the 110 meter Hurdles putting the heat on the Mustangs.
“Jeylin Hicks, coming out in second in the 100 Meter Dash was huge. The triple jumpers (Devonte Davis and Darius Hyacinth)we knew they would be the key going one two in the triple jump. That’s an 18 point jump that’s hard to beat. It’s like having a fourth relay team but the kids did what we needed to do,” said North Shore Coach Briner
A team effort from North Shore turnout to be the blow that separated them.
North Shore’s standout DeAndrew White led the way, medaling in four different events. He won the long jump, took second in the 200 Meter Dash, helped his team to a second place finish in the 4×400 Meter Relay and led his team to a third place finish in the 4×200 Meter Relay. With other additional help from teammates, The Mustangs finish the season undefeated.
Dulles Sheroid Evans is the first sprinter in Class 5A since 2003 to win both the 100 and 200 Meter Dash. That also closes out an undefeated season in both races for Evans.
“I wanted to bring both golds home. I completed my mission so I’m happy with that. I wanted to run 20.5 in the 200 Meter Dash. But I won both races and now I’m going back to the 300 Meter Hurdles next year. To have my cousin (Fort Bend Elkins Taylor Houston of her victory in the 200 Meter Dash) here competing and winning is an amazing feeling,” said Dulles sprinter Sheriod Evans
The Lady Raiders of Dallas Skyline scored 56 points to outlast Desoto and Houston Lamar for the Class 5A title. The win gave the Raiders their ninth overall title and a place in track & field history.
“They really stepped up to the plate today. Coming in we knew we would need to place first or second in everything we competed in we couldn’t get third or fourth in order to win the team title. We only had two relays and two individuals coming in and pretty much everybody that came to state was in the position. Fort bend Marshall and Desoto had two relays and two individuals so it’s about who did what in their events and our girls went out there and performed. It was long process throughout the year but our girls step up when it counted,” said William Mitchell Sky line’s Coach.
Desoto finished second with a total of 36 points while Lamar the highest finishing Houston Area had 26 points.
“Desoto beat us for the title at regional’s but I told our girls don’t worry about it. They beat us then but we still have a chance to win state,” said Skyline Coach Mitchell.
Westside’s Diamond Dixon scorched a time of 52.92 in the 400 Meter Dash.
West Orange-Stark claimed the boys Class 3A Track & Field State Championship by edging Liberty-Eylau 66-61.33. The victory gave the Mustangs their second consecutive title.
Coming into today’s meet Dallas Madison and Liberty-Eylau loomed as top competitors but was no match for the powerful Mustangs.
They started the afternoon by winning the 4×100 Meter Relay. Phillip Jones finished second in the 110 Hurdles, Trey Franks won the 100 Meter Dash and Thomas took second in the 200 Meter Dash. They concluded their evening by winning the 4×200 Meter Relay and took home the team title.
Waco Connally Girls had to settle for second place with 48 points behind Texarakana Liberty-Eylau, the Class 3A champs with 56 points. Both teams shared the title last year.
Disappointment set in when the Lady Cadets finished fourth in the 4×100 Meter Relay and fifth in the 4×200 Meter Relay ultimately wiping out a chance for the title.
In Class 2A New Waverly Boys had a good showing finishing second with a team total of 61 points behind 72 points for Daingerfield. The bulldogs won all three Relays totaling 60 of their 61 points.
