Dallas – The first annual Red Bull Game Breaker Regional Qualifiers finals 7 on 7 was a success.
Red Bull Game Breakers 7 on 7 Tournament is described as football with more game. It awards points for game breaking moments as well as touchdowns. It definitely separates the players from game breakers.
The highly anticipated tournament is a sure fit for the future of 7 on 7 football.
The innovative 7 on 7 tournament gave young athletes the opportunity to show case their talent as well as their A game. Some worked to sharpen areas of their game.
The tournament started with nearly 15,000 athletes from 72 schools from six different regional qualifiers.
Eight schools from three southern states arrived in Dallas after advancing through their respective regions, in search of the top 7 on 7 team title. Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, three states that produce some of the best football talent in the United States were on hand.
When it was all said and done it came down to Louisiana vs. Texas with the Purple Knights taking all honors.
Cornerback Sean Thomas had two game breaking interceptions to help the Purple Knights of St. Augustine take home the first Annual Red Bull Game Breakers 7 on 7 Title with a 31-14 defeat of the Cy-Fair Bobcats Saturday night at the Cotton Bowl.
“I knew it was something special the game was going back and forth and I knew I had to make a play. Coach gave me the go and I step up and make a play. It was big for our team said, St. Augustine’s Cornerback Sean Thomas.
St. Augustine broke open a close game using a four touchdown performance from QB Trey Lucas, three of which went to upcoming senior WR Marc Edward’s. After dropping his first two balls of the game Edwards regained his focus. His third and final touchdown catch came in game breaking fashion. With double coverage, Edwards ran a streak pattern down the left sideline and used his ability to out position two Bobcat defenders while out jumping both in the end zone for the touchdown.
Junior WR’s Larry Dace and Lorenzo Doss also showed promise with big catches. Dace reeled in a beautiful twenty yard touchdown reception after running a post pattern.
Linebacker Ricky Roberson showed great quickness accounting for one of three picks on the night.
Cy-Fair the Houston Region winner advance to the Championship round by defeating San Antonio Warren in the opening round of the tournament and used come from behind one point victory 21-20 over Lake Travis to gain a berth in the finals.
St. Augustine a Southern Louisiana power showed why some consider them as one of the most talented teams in the country by having little trouble advancing to the title game. With wins over Midwest City, OK and Yukon Miller, OK the Purple Knights waltzed into the championship game.
