Key hits come at right
time for Mayde Creek
The Mayde Creek Rams (18-14-0) jumped out to a 2-0 start and held on to defeat Memorial 7-5 in Class 5A Region III Bi-District game one of the best-of-three series Thursday night at Mayde Creek High School. Game two will take place at Memorial Friday evening.
Colton Conn’s three run shot over the right field wall was the difference in the game. The homer scored Grizzell and Daniel Rios who was hit by a pitch to give the Rams a 7-1 lead before the Mustangs rally fell short.
In the bottom of the first with two outs Grizzell put Mayde Creek on the board with a two RBI single to right field.
“They got the key hits when they had to, you got to tip your hat to them. They came out and played extremely well, we didn’t get the key hits. I think we had about 12 but we didn’t get them when we needed them. They only had like 5 hits but they got the ones when they needed to, they played a great game and that’s why we play two out of three,” said Memorial’s Coach Jeremy York.
The Mustangs sliced the lead in half 2-1 in the top of the second on Boomer White’s gaper in left field, the double pushed Ben Carl across the plate. Harris Rome got on with a infield single and stole second. With runners in scoring position the Ram’s Suntych got David Holland to fly out to centerfield to end the threat.
“We got some keys hits when we needed today, got some runners on, their pitcher got behind in a couple counts and we were able to capitalize, finally. We’ve been doing it the last three or four games so hopefully we continue on with it,” said Lynn Leonard Mayde Creek’s Coach.
Suntych got the win while pitching a complete game and striking out five.
The Mustangs hit the ball hard all evening but for the most part, right to waiting Ram players.
“They hit the ball the whole game hard (speaking of the hard hitting Memorial Mustangs) luckily they hit it right at us tonight,” said Mayde Creek’s Coach Leonard.
Lucas Leonard led off the bottom of third with a infield single, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Kyle Tatum. Memorial’s Nick Bergmann retired Pitcher Justin Suntych the third batter in the inning, before Left fielder Patrick Hoag got on first with an infield single. Junior Short stop Nick Grizzell picked up his fourth RBI with a clutch double to left field. That scored Leonard and Hoag giving Mayde Creek a 4-1 lead. Then Conn’s three run homer push the lead to 7-1.
“I had two strikes on me, he just hung the curve ball and I hit it,” said Mayde Creek’s DH Colton Conn (speaking of his three run homer).
The Mustangs found an opening in the top of the fifth inning. Harris Rome and Wayne Taylor both got to base on balls. Hard hitting Short Stop Carter Burgess hit a fly to shallow left center which dropped in after Left Fielder Hoag and Centerfielder Leonard had trouble chasing down the ball, nearly colliding. That scored Rome cutting the lead 7-2.
“Well I came out and pitched but they hit me good and we were hitting balls right at people. They just got it done today and we didn’t,” said Memorial’s Pitcher Nick Bergmann.
Memorial (24-6-1) came up with three more runs in the top of the sixth but the rally fell short when Suntych fanned Taylor.
