Three first half turnovers turned into 21Redskin points. Though both teams turned the ball over, it was the Redskins who got the best of the turnover battle.
Bram Kohlhausen passed for 171 yards and three touchdowns to help the Lamar Redskins defeat Madison 44-7 Friday Night at Delmar Stadium. With the win the Redskins have clinched a playoff spot and a share of the district 20-5A title.
Lamar will face Sam Houston Thursday for a chance to win the title outright.
Unable to take advantage of three first half turnovers turned out to be a tough night for the Marlins, as district rival Lamar jumped out to a 37-0 first half lead.
A fumble and an interception set up the Redskins first two scores, an eight yard touchdown pass from Kohlhausen to Lord Byron Cannon and London Kirby’s one yard plunge gave Lamar a 14-0 lead with 4:24 to go in the first quarter.
Defensive Linemen Weston Hawkins and Robert Sanchez kept continua’s pressure on the Marlins stopping them for no gain or minus yards.
Each time Madison forced a turnover they eventually returned the ball back to the Redskins.
“I haven’t seen a game like this in a long time, turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. You can’t play a good football team like that; they had them also so it neutralized each other. We just didn’t play the game, we make any excuses, and we had people out. That’s the way the game goes. That’s just one game, they beat us. So we got to get ready for next week,” said Madison’s Coach Ray Seals.
Lamar padded their lead with three more touchdowns and safety to take a 37 point lead to intermission. Kohlhausen threw two touchdowns, a six yarder to Cannon and a 36 yard strike to Sophomore Beau Wells, while the defense recorded a safety when Marlins Quarterback Demarcus Willis was unable field a high snap from center that rolled to the end zone where Redskin defenders tackled him.
“Well we played awfully well even though we made a couple of mistakes early. We bounce back from them and it was a combination of our kids played extremely well really ready to play and Madison lost several of their best players over the last two or three weeks, not knocking them but they weren’t playing with a full deck. We was very concern coming into the game about who was going to play and thought it was going to be a really good game,” said Lamar’s Coach Nolan.
In the second half the Redskins capped their scoring with Kirby’s one yard touchdown run with 3:23 to go in the 4th quarter.
Madison avoided the shutout with a late touchdown.
Kohlhausen concluded his evening 8-10 passing for the Redskins while Marlins Quarterback Demarcus Willis was 12-29-165 and 2 interceptions.
“There was a lot of motivation throughout the week going into this game. The school painted up, we were just ready for this game. We came out firing on all cylinders passing and running and just really played well tonight,” said Lamar’s Quarterback Bram Kohlhausen.
