DeSoto Boys sweep three relays

Not even a strong head wind could stop the Desoto Boys Track and Field team, last year’s reining Class 5A state Champions.
In front of a standing room crowd Saturday evening at Durley Field, the Eagles of DeSoto flexed it’s muscle in winning three relays, placing in two other racing events and taking a pair of field events in the 62 nd Annual Texas Southern Relays.
Despite any team titles were giving out to solidify a winner, the Eagles clearly showed it’s cup is far from empty, in kicking off the season in stellar fashion.
Kyle Collins took second in the 400 Meter Run (48.17) and Josh Woods took fifth in the 110 Hurdles (14.53).  Tremayne Acy, Brandon McDowell, Alford Tribble and Dontre Wilson teamed up, winning the 4×100, 4×200 Meter Relays in the times of (41.54) and (1:25.46).  The foursome of Allen, Dominique Drayden, Chris Lacey and Myron Turner finished third in the Sprint Medley (3:37.87).  Cortevios Allen, Howard Aldridge, Marlon Brown and Josh Woods closed out the day by winning the 4×400 Meter Relay with a time of (3:18.28).
Dontre Wilson one of the nation’s most deorated athletes, is a prise football recruit who recently changed his pledge from Oregon to Ohio State University.  The decision was brought about after Coach Kelly left the school.
“Well I didn’t know what to expect when Coach Kelly left so took my second choice, Ohio State who I feel very comforable with,” added Wilson
In the field, Collins won the Long Jump (24-03.50) and Drayden grabbed second in the Triple Jump (44-02.00).
One of the national’s top high school lady sprinters, SheKera Martin of Westlake high school of Southwest Atlanta, Georgia staked her claim on Texas soil with a pair of victories. First anchoring the Lady Lions 4×100 Meter Relay team to an impressive 46.01 under a strong head wind. Later, winning the 100 Meter Run in 11.76.
Recently relocted, Martin began her senior year at Westlake after her mother took a new job in Atlanta.  Originally, she grew up in South Carolina where she won the 100 Meter title her junior season.
“I knew it was a good field,” SheKera said, of the competition she faced in the 100 Meter Dash. I knew, I had to go out there and consentrate on running and not the strong head wind.”
Martin’s goal is to run against the clock instead of focusing the competition which works better for her.
The Auburn’s commit, Martin, lived in South Carolina last year as junior where she won the state title in the 100 Meter Dash before moving to Atlanta her senior year.
Other stand outs included, Cameron Burrell who anchored Ridge Point’s winning 4×100 Meter Relay team in Division I (42.74) and clocking the fastest time, nation wide in the 100 Meter Dash at 10.25.
After the highlight of the day, Burrell’s electrifying sprint, he mentioned. “My take off was good.  All I wanted to do is keep my composure because the crowd was a little noisy.  I just wanted to focus on what I was doing and hopefully get a personal best out of it.”
Burrell started his career at Hightower before realignment forced him to Fort Bends newest school.
Beaumount Ozen’s Tony Brown, one the nation’s fastest hurdler edged Hoover’s (Ala.) Marlon Humphrey in the 110 Hurdles and finished third in the 100 Meter Dash behind Kyle Fulks and Burrell.
“Hurdle, hurdle, hurdle, win, win, win was all I could think of,” Beaumont Ozen’s Tony Brown said who admitted he had to stay smooth in order to edge Humphrey.
Kincades’s Raven Rogers took gold in the 400 Meter Run.
“This race was good for me, because I like compitition,” said Rogers.  It really brought what I’ve been practicing for.  It tested my strength
