It is not uncommon to witness a pair of teams from District 11-6A and 23-6A progress to the finals.

C.E. King and North Shore are contending in District 23-6A along with Atascocita, Beaumont Westbrook, Beaumont United, Humble, Kingwood, and Summer Creek to establish one of the strongest districts in the state.

The Panthers (13-2) leveraged its dynamic offense to eliminate last season’s Class 6A Division II champion, Vandergrift, by a score of 58-41, while North Shore (13-2) exhibited a remarkable defensive performance to defeat the previously undefeated Lake Travis, 28-6. Following its absence from the championship round last year, the Mustangs will face its well-known rival, Duncanville, in the Class 6A Division I final on Saturday at 3pm at AT&T Stadium.

C.E. King and Summer Creek clashed in district play (42-28) prior to its recent face-off in the regional finals (24-21). Atascocita suffered a defeat in a high-scoring battle against the up-and-coming Dickinson Gators, 51-47, who ultimately lost to North Shore in the regional finals, 46-23.

In a matchup with numerous similarities, DeSoto and Duncanville face significant district opponents, including Cedar Hill, the Mesquite schools, Lancaster, Skyline, and Waxahachie. The Eagles maneuvered through challenging situations after contending with North Crowley, the previous season’s 6A Division I champion; College Park; Longview; Willis; and Creekside of Fairburn, a consistent powerhouse in Georgia, which won the Georgia Class 4A title on Monday evening.

In an unexpected twist, the Eagles triumphed over top-ranked Southlake Carroll in a thrilling contest, 57-44. One ranking system, Massey Ratings, positioned the Dragons as the premier team in the nation.

DeSoto does not perceive this as an upset, having gained from a rigorous schedule. A true storybook of iron sharpens iron. Despite suffering three losses, the Eagles appreciate the preparation it have undergone.

Although not as tumultuous as DeSoto’s schedule, Duncanville faced a challenging path, dropping a decision to a good Waxahachie team, but rebounded to win 11 consecutive games, including a decisive 31-9 victory over Allen in the semifinals.

Appropriately, the four teams will converge in the finals to determine who will claim bragging rights in a contest between Dallas and Houston.

The third edition of the high school football season in Texas has surfaced with the regular season behind us. The journey commenced with the preseason, transitioned through district play, and has progressed to the playoffs.

As we approach the playoffs, the unpredictability of excitement, coinciding with the holiday shopping season and favorable weather conditions, makes Texas high school football an exhilarating time.

Before diving deeper into the playoffs, the final rankings for each classification are below.

Duncanville is the premier team in Class 6A and arguably the best in the state. Depending on the polls, the Panthers are ranked from No. 2 to No. 4 nationally. The Panthers are favored to bring home its third consecutive championship.

Ranked second, North Shore has demonstrated its prowess by leading a competitive 21-6A district, triumphing over nationally recognized teams such as Atascocita and Summer Creek. The Mustangs will look to defend its title in Class 6A Region III, with formidable opponents like Westlake and Region II Duncanville looming.

North Crowley has emerged as a compelling narrative this season. Following a challenging semifinal defeat last year, the Eagles have exhibited remarkable resolve. Its playoff journey will ultimately determine its potential.

No. 4 Southlake Carroll rounds out the top ten, followed by No. 5 Humble Atascocita, No. 6 DeSoto, No. 7 Allen, No. 9 Lamar, and No. 10 Austin Westlake.

In Class 5A Division I, No. 1 Aledo concluded the season with a resounding 62-0 victory over Denton. The Bearcats have not faced defeat since its initial game of the season, losing 35-30 to Denton Guyer.

South Oak Cliff, the leading team in Class 5A Division II, exemplifies resilience. Despite a challenging schedule and setbacks against top-tier teams like North Shore and Duncanville, the Golden Bears remain poised for the playoffs.

Celina heads a competitive Class 4A Division I, while Carthage aims to secure another Class 4A Division II championship.

A tug-of-war atop the rankings. It’s a sign of parity for some, including two teams who met in the 6A semifinals in 2020 —No. 2 nationally ranked North Shore, who held the top spot in the state polls, and No. 10 Westlake, who entered at the No. 2 statewide. Both teams displayed a chess match of strategies before the Mustangs fell, 24-21, at Legacy Stadium in Katy.

The loss ended a two-year championship rein for North Shore, which shadowed the crowd of red and white, leaving many in tears. Barring any upsets this upcoming season, the two could meet again in the semifinals.

In its only other meeting, the Mustangs defeated Westlake in overtime, 21-14, to win the 6A Division I Title in 2015.

Although traditional rolls on at North Shore and Westlake, the favorites to play for the Class 6A Division I Title, other notable perennial playoff contenders will look to test the waters.

No. 6 Katy took home its ninth state championship on January 16, 2021, by beating Cedar Hill, 51-14. Class 5A power, Aledo holds the most titles in any classification (10).

The Tigers also suffered one of its worst defeats in school history when No 2 nationally ranked Westlake roared to a 45-14 victory in the 6A Division II state semifinals on December 11, 2021.

However, No. 3 Southlake Carroll, No. 4 Duncanville, and No. 6 Denton Guyer usually have a hand in stirring the pot annually. Duncanville defeated Southlake Carroll in a semifinals matchup 35-9 on December 11, 2021. The same season saw North Shore walk away with its fifth championship by knocking off Duncanville, 17-10, for the third time in four years. Denton Guyer’s last state final appearance resulted in a 40-21 loss to Austin Westlake on December 18, 2021.

Still, it’s a new season, and anything is possible. Below are a listing of the top ten rankings by classification.
