Three interceptions and Gilbert’s four-touchdown performance too much for Mustangs to overcome

Humble – Multitalented running back, Sherman Gilbert rushed for 225 yards, scored four touchdowns and the defense recorded four turnovers to lead Coldspring-Oakhurst, to a 35-13 victory over West Orange-Stark in the Class 3A Division II Region III Finals on Friday at Turner Stadium.
The win puts the Trojans (14-0), last year’s Class 3A Division II Region III state finalist on the doorstep of another semifinal appearance, where it will face the winner of Devine/Wimberley, 7 pm next Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
Gilbert, who started on both sides of the ball, gave the Mustangs fits all evening. His 46-yard interception touchdown, while playing defensive back, opened the scoring with 9:30 left in the first quarter. From the RB position, his workhorse effort earned Gilbert three rushing TDs, 2, 30 and 2-yards.
Not to be out-done, West Orange-Stark (10-4) matched the score, when Jimmy Salter threw a 25-yard TD strike to WR Nathaniel Colbert over the middle, giving one defender a head fake and raced into the end zone. With Greg Dunham’s extra point kick, the game was tied 7-7.
The Trojans played with a lot fire and were very active on both sides of the ball. On offense, Coldspring-Oakhurst racked up 476 total yards. Defensively, DT Chance Andries and company kept the Mustangs under pressure throughout, forcing three interceptions and a fumble. For West Orange-Stark, 273 yards and stopping the run was a huge challenge. Once the Trojans discovered a soft spot in the middle of the Mustangs defense, Gilbert and crew were unstoppable.
Cornel Thompson, West Orange-Stark’s coach said, “We knew it be hard rock mining for four quarters; we knew it would be a 48-minute football game and of course they made plays and we didn’t”.
A steady load of Gilbert and Colton Monroe helped the Trojans score its third TD, resulting in Gilbert’s 2-yard run, to help Coldspring-Oakhurst carry a 21-13 lead into halftime. Two of the three Trojan drives were setup by interceptions, the second coming from free safety JT Wilson.
“The game started great but when we starting loosing, people began to give up. You can’t give up when you’re down”, said Colin Janice, West Orange-Stark’s DE/DE/TB.
After a scoreless third quarter, Coldspring-Oakhurst scored 14 straight fourth quarter points to open a 35-13 lead. At midfield, the Trojans started a drive and increase its lead, 27-13, on Gilbert’s 30-yard TD sprint. Just after, an opportunistic Coldspring-Oakhurst’s special team recovered a fumble at the Mustangs 36-yard line after LB Patrick Giddens grabbed the loose ball. Later, with possession of the ball, Trojan’s Gilbert scored on a 2-yard run, his final TD of the evening and converted the 2-point conversion with a 3-yard carry to build its largest lead of the game, one that would stick, 35-13.
“Our kickoff coverage was horrible”, said Coldspring-Oakhurst coach, Bryan Barbay, so went ahead and onside kicked it and got a break on that. We scored again and that gave a little breathing room.”
Colton Monroe added 91 yards on 17 carries and a TD, for Coldspring-Oakhurst. QB Jimmy Salter, 9 of 25 for 116 yards, a TD, and 3-INTs, led the Mustangs while WR Nathaniel Colbert caught five for 76 yards.
Sophomore running back Kevin Taylor ties state
record with 110 touchdowns
Belle Glades, Florida is the home of some of the top football talent in the nation and in that same equation you can add star RB Kevin Taylor. Taylor only a sophomore is the son of NFL great Fred Taylor. The blood lines have the resemblances.
Already in his third year at the school, Taylor made first team offense as an 8th grader and had the size to go with it at 5’11 and 205 pounds.
His 44 carries in the state championship game earned him a FHSSA Finals record while helping his team to back to back state title wins over Warner Christian in the Class 1B Championship game.
Though he was ejected for a second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty Taylor still managed to tie the state record held by Mike Bellamy of Punta Gorda Charlotte for career touchdowns at 110, passing Emmitt Smith in the process.
A slow start watch Taylor rush for 51 yards on 15 carries in the first half, but he finished with 248 yards on the afternoon.
Taylor said it felt amazing passing Smith to grab a share of TD record and thank God for his accomplishment.
Aledo’s Junior Running back Johnathan Gray ties the state record for most touchdowns in a state championship game also in doing so broke a 57 year old record held by Kenneth hall for the most rushing touchdowns in a season with 59, two more than Hall. The record was set in 1953 while Hall played for Sugarland High School.
Gray’s timing couldn’t have been better in a first half shootout with La Marque and opposing star Running back Tim Wright. The two backs combine for 11 touchdowns on the evening and rushed for 560 yards.
Five second half touchdowns, Gray help lead Aledo to its second consecutive state title.

Magical season ends for Trojans,
late comeback fails

Arlington – The edge finally got dull. After living on the edge four out of the last five weeks the Trojans finally found a match. Trinity had grown accustom to second half comebacks but facing another undefeated team wasn’t able to make the adjustment.
All the odds were stacked against them, but Pearland marched into the title game unfazed of the No. 1 ranked Trojans with No. 2 Katy already at their disposal in the regional final.
With six seconds to go Pearland pulled off the unthinkable to defeated Euless Trinity Trojans 28-24 after a desperation pass was deflected by Dustin Garrison and off the hands of Brandon Carter, shocking the nation’s No. 1 ranked team in thrilling fashion Saturday night at Cowboy Stadium in front of 43,321 screaming fans. The victory gives the Oilers (16-0) their first state title in the school history.
“Honestly a town of champions, you talk about our little baseball, our girls’ softball now the football, we got state champions in Pearland. So proud of the players, so proud of the fans, and so proud of our coaches. We have a saying, plus one our kids they stepped up one degree to become champions today,” said Coach Tony Heath, Pearland High School.
The Trojans got off to a strong start with a three play 62 yard drive as fans watched Williams hurdle Oilers Cornerback Myles Kanipes on his way to a 55 yard touchdown run.
Pearland shook off a slow start to draw even with Trinity when Garrison powered his way to the end zone from six yards out
After Trinity led 10-7 on Tyler Orwig’s 35 yard field goal, the Oilers struck again with Garrison’s three yard run to take a four point lead, 14-10 with 2:06 to go in the second quarter.
Garrison’s 128 yards on 28 carries, 39 receiving and three rushing touchdowns was enough to earn him the offensive Most Valuable Player Award. Two way standout, Ukuachu was the defensive Most Valuable Player with eight tackles also had three catches for 78 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Samuel Ukwuachu presents was felt, the two way talent played DE/WR and was most effective on both sides of the ball, helping the Oilers hold the Trojans to only ten points at the half.
A couple of series into the 3rd quarter was the time when Pearland caught the Trojans napping while running the dead man trick play. The linemen never took their stance and RB Garrison, left side WR were facing the coaches on the side lines as if they were waiting for the play. Then after, the ball was snapped to Anderson. Receiver Ukwuashu sprinted down the right side on a streak pattern beating his man for the 54 yard TD catch. The play was an instant classic. That pushed the Oilers lead to 21-10.
“We were going to run it (The dead man play) in the second quarter but we ran the ball. Coach told me in the locker room that I was going to be the man to run it so I belted up my pants strapped on my chin trap and said I have to make a play for my team,” said Pearland’s receiver Samuel Ukwuachu.
Seemingly not happy about the previous touchdown play, Trinity (15-1) put together a 69 yard drive that watched Tuscan score from two yards out trimming the lead 21-17.
The play of the game came when Pearland faced 4th and inches at the Trojans 15 yard line. Anderson scratched out a yard up the middle to keep the drive alive at the 14 yard line and eventually scored the winning touchdown on Garrison’s two yard run increasing the lead back to eleven, 28-17.
“It was a good game from the first quarter to the fourth quarter, we both were fighting,” said Brandon Carter Euless Trinity’s QB/WR. They played smarter than we did, we didn’t wrap up as much on defense and offense had too many penalties and mistakes.”
Trinity responded with a 66 yard drive as Carter jumped over Enrique Oquendo for the two score, cutting the lead 28-24.
A glimpse of light peak through setting up a thrilling finish when Pearland penetrated deep in Trojans territory at the five yard line but came away empty after Dylan Norwak’s 22 yard field goal attempt sailed wide right on 4th down from the five yard line.
With 1:41 to go, the Trojans took possession at their 20 yard line before Garrison deflected a pass that went off the hands of Carter in the end zone with 6 seconds to go.
(The dead man play) in the second quarter but we ran the ball. Coach told me in the locker room that I was going to be the man to run it so I belted up my pants strapped on my chin trap and said I have to make a play for my team,” said Pearland’s receiver Samuel Ukwuachu.
“It was a good game from the first quarter to the fourth quarter, we both were fighting,” said Brandon Carter Euless Trinity’s QB/WR. They played smarter than we did, we did wrap up as much on defense and offense had too many penalties and mistakes.”

Arlington – With time ticking away and trailing 21-17, Brown score the go ahead touchdown from two yards out with 2:29 to go.
In just the 5th year in the school existence, Steele made the best of a rare opportunity.
Cibolo Steele drove 77 yards to earn their first Class 5A Division II State Title by way of defeating the Denton Guyer Wildcats Saturday night in front of more than 37,000 fans at Cowboy Stadium. The game was the second of three championship games played at the stadium.
Not since 2002 has a team from San Antonio won a title in class 5A, the last was Converse Judson.
“Thanks go to God, we got a group of unbelievable kids and we got a group of unbelievable coaches that care about each other. Such a family oriented group,” said Steele’s Coach Mike Jinks.
Steele (14-2) marched 79 on their opening drive to take a 7-0 lead, on Browns 19 yard catch and run. Brown accounted for 58 yards on the drive.
Steele’s Shane Huhn recovered Walsh’s fumble at the 36 of Guyer, but the offense wasn’t able to put points on the board. Soon after, a short punt was helpful in setting up the Wildcats tying touchdown when Walsh’s scampered 16 yards straight up the middle of Steele’s defense.
“Well I knew it would be a four quarter ball game. I knew it would come down to mistakes and it came down to the last possession, they made a great play on the sideline right there and picked up the first down to ice it,” said Denton Guyer’s Coach.
Sensational freshman, Justin Stockton complimented Brown well, keeping Guyer’s defense off balanced while picking up tough yards inside.
The knights put together a 12 play 80 yard drive that watched Brown who napped the MVP honors scored from one yard out on 4th and goal to recapture a seven point lead, 14-7. The stinger suffered in the first quarter when Brown’s arm apparently was hit by a Wildcats helmet causing it to go numb for several minutes wasn’t enough to stop a three touchdown performance, with the last one deciding the outcome.
Brown, one of the top RB in the nation led Steele with 107 yards rushing, two scores on the ground and a 19 yard touchdown reception. He finished the season with 2,599 yards.
A holding penalty assessed against the Knights secondary on 3rd and 7 gave Guyer another chance, in which they took advantage of a 60 yard drive to tie the game at 14 on a 43 yard strike from Walsh to Senior Wide out Josh Stewart.
Stockton fumble at the 35 of Wildcats spoiled the opportunity for Steele to go ahead before the half ended. Guyer ran out the clock to end the quarter.
The only other school to win a state championship after moving from 4A to 5A was Southlake Carroll who accomplished the feat in 2002.
Steele kept the pressure on the Wildcats in the third quarter collecting a 22 yard field goal from Michael Stohlmann to take a 17-14 lead. Mean while the defense led by (MVP Linebacker Ryan Simmons), Defensive linemen Marquis Anderson, Alex Lincoln and Jr. Linebacker Devere Carrington held the high scoring Wildcats offense in check all evening. The Wildcats were averaging nearly 45 points a contest.
“But the memories they’ll last forever, we’ll never forget the days, those days we spent in the locker room hanging out with each other,” said J.W. Walsh Guyer’s Quarterback. These are the days you will never forget as a family.”
The Wildcats held on to their 3 point lead while both defenses came to life before Guyer went ahead on Treavon Walton’s 11 yard run with 7:13 to go in the game.
Brown’s two yard TD run put Steele back in front with 2:29 left.
Guyer drove into the Knights territory but watched their hopes fade away when Kwame Clark intercepted Walsh with 1:31 to go.
