It is not uncommon to witness a pair of teams from District 11-6A and 23-6A progress to the finals.

C.E. King and North Shore are contending in District 23-6A along with Atascocita, Beaumont Westbrook, Beaumont United, Humble, Kingwood, and Summer Creek to establish one of the strongest districts in the state.

The Panthers (13-2) leveraged its dynamic offense to eliminate last season’s Class 6A Division II champion, Vandergrift, by a score of 58-41, while North Shore (13-2) exhibited a remarkable defensive performance to defeat the previously undefeated Lake Travis, 28-6. Following its absence from the championship round last year, the Mustangs will face its well-known rival, Duncanville, in the Class 6A Division I final on Saturday at 3pm at AT&T Stadium.

C.E. King and Summer Creek clashed in district play (42-28) prior to its recent face-off in the regional finals (24-21). Atascocita suffered a defeat in a high-scoring battle against the up-and-coming Dickinson Gators, 51-47, who ultimately lost to North Shore in the regional finals, 46-23.

In a matchup with numerous similarities, DeSoto and Duncanville face significant district opponents, including Cedar Hill, the Mesquite schools, Lancaster, Skyline, and Waxahachie. The Eagles maneuvered through challenging situations after contending with North Crowley, the previous season’s 6A Division I champion; College Park; Longview; Willis; and Creekside of Fairburn, a consistent powerhouse in Georgia, which won the Georgia Class 4A title on Monday evening.

In an unexpected twist, the Eagles triumphed over top-ranked Southlake Carroll in a thrilling contest, 57-44. One ranking system, Massey Ratings, positioned the Dragons as the premier team in the nation.

DeSoto does not perceive this as an upset, having gained from a rigorous schedule. A true storybook of iron sharpens iron. Despite suffering three losses, the Eagles appreciate the preparation it have undergone.

Although not as tumultuous as DeSoto’s schedule, Duncanville faced a challenging path, dropping a decision to a good Waxahachie team, but rebounded to win 11 consecutive games, including a decisive 31-9 victory over Allen in the semifinals.

Appropriately, the four teams will converge in the finals to determine who will claim bragging rights in a contest between Dallas and Houston.

Seeing all four District 23-6A representatives still alive in the playoffs is unsurprising. Atascocita, Kingwood, North Shore, and Summer Creek compete in Northeast Houston. It’s one of the state’s most competitive districts. Fans will witness its four playoff teams competing in the Region III finals, with Kingwood facing off against No. 7 Summer Creek in Division II. At the same time, No. 5 Atascocita takes on No. 2 North Shore in Division I. These matchups highlight the intensity and skill presented within this district, known for its formidable teams.

District 23-6A has a reputation for producing teams that excel in the playoffs, as evidenced by last season’s performances. Summer Creek and North Shore made significant strides, reaching the state finals in its respective divisions. A victory for either team in the upcoming matches would secure their places in the state semifinals, bringing them one step closer to the championship game the following week.

Atascocita’s sole defeat this season was against North Shore, which completed the regular season without a loss. The upcoming clash between these two teams serves as a rematch and a critical contest for advancement to the semifinals, marking the second consecutive year they have faced each other in this pivotal stage of the playoffs.

However, the most captivating story is that of Kingwood, a team that has surpassed all expectations to advance to the regional finals. The Mustangs have silenced its critics and are eager to demonstrate its rightful place in the competition.

Before any discussions regarding the championship can occur, the situation needs to stabilize by next weekend, when the four teams compete against each other.

In various games across the state, Klein Collins from Class 6A Region II Division II fell to Longview, 42-28. It’s Longview’s first appearance in the regional finals since 2018, when it defeated Beaumont Westbrook, 35-34, in the championship. The Lobos will play last season’s Class 6A Division II champion, No. 6 DeSoto, which secured its place by defeating Willis with a score of 55-35. Meanwhile, the undefeated No. 4 Southlake Carroll Dragons, a strong contender, successfully navigated a challenging match against Hebron, winning 42-37 to reach the Class 6A Region I Division II finals, where it will face Denton Guyer, which convincingly defeated Crowley with a score of 44-7.

In a contest featuring single-loss teams, Vandegrift triumphed over Cibolo Steele with a score of 49-35, securing a place in the Class 6A Region IV finals, where it will compete against San Antonio Harlan.

No. 17 Bridgeland defeated Waxahachie 24-19 in the Class 6A Region II Division I, securing its spot in the region finals. Duncanville, next up for Bridgeland, is seeking its third consecutive championship after downing No. 23 The Woodlands 42-20.

One of the most intriguing matchups will feature a rematch of last season’s Class 6A Region I finals when undefeated No. 8 Allen, who narrowly defeated No. 18 Euless Trinity22-21, prepares to face undefeated No. 3 North Crowley. The Panthers pack an arsenal of offensive weapons, including receiver Quentin Gibson, running back Cornelius Warren, and quarterback Chris Jimerson. They have demonstrated remarkable tenacity, highlighted by its recent victory over the undefeated No. 9 Coppell, winning 35-24. Notably, this encounter marks the second instance this season in which Crowley has secured a win without achieving a double-digit margin, the first being their season opener against Lancaster, which concluded with a score of 29-21.

Lake Travis aims to level the playing field against archrival No. 11 Westlake in the Class 6A Region IV, Division I matchup.

Top-ranked Aledo continued its impressive performance by defeating Tascosa 62-7 in Class 5A Region I Division I, securing a rematch against Denton Ryan, which triumphed over Richland 48-35. Meanwhile, Frisco Lone Star edged Midlothian in a closely contested matchup, 39-35. The Rangers will square off against Highland Park in the finals of Region II.

LaPorte achieved a remarkable turnaround by outscoring A&M Consolidated 28-0 in the second half, securing a 35-17 victory and advancing to the Class 5A Region III finals. Angleton got by College Station with the slimmest margin of victory, 35-34, and now waits in the Bulldogs’ path. Meanwhile, Corpus Christi Flour Bluff will battle Smithson Valley to round out Region IV.

Class 5A Region II Division II competition is poised to intensify as Port Neches-Groves faces off against Dallas South Oak Cliff. These two teams previously contended for the 2023 championship, during which the Indians secured victory by scoring 11 consecutive points in the fourth quarter. Additionally, Port Neches-Groves delivered Texarkana its first defeat of the season, 31-28.

The third edition of the high school football season in Texas has surfaced with the regular season behind us. The journey commenced with the preseason, transitioned through district play, and has progressed to the playoffs.

As we approach the playoffs, the unpredictability of excitement, coinciding with the holiday shopping season and favorable weather conditions, makes Texas high school football an exhilarating time.

Before diving deeper into the playoffs, the final rankings for each classification are below.

Duncanville is the premier team in Class 6A and arguably the best in the state. Depending on the polls, the Panthers are ranked from No. 2 to No. 4 nationally. The Panthers are favored to bring home its third consecutive championship.

Ranked second, North Shore has demonstrated its prowess by leading a competitive 21-6A district, triumphing over nationally recognized teams such as Atascocita and Summer Creek. The Mustangs will look to defend its title in Class 6A Region III, with formidable opponents like Westlake and Region II Duncanville looming.

North Crowley has emerged as a compelling narrative this season. Following a challenging semifinal defeat last year, the Eagles have exhibited remarkable resolve. Its playoff journey will ultimately determine its potential.

No. 4 Southlake Carroll rounds out the top ten, followed by No. 5 Humble Atascocita, No. 6 DeSoto, No. 7 Allen, No. 9 Lamar, and No. 10 Austin Westlake.

In Class 5A Division I, No. 1 Aledo concluded the season with a resounding 62-0 victory over Denton. The Bearcats have not faced defeat since its initial game of the season, losing 35-30 to Denton Guyer.

South Oak Cliff, the leading team in Class 5A Division II, exemplifies resilience. Despite a challenging schedule and setbacks against top-tier teams like North Shore and Duncanville, the Golden Bears remain poised for the playoffs.

Celina heads a competitive Class 4A Division I, while Carthage aims to secure another Class 4A Division II championship.

Last season, Duncanville won its first state title since 1998 by defeating North Shore 28-21 in the Class 6A Division I championship. The two have met in finals four times in the past five years, with the Mustangs winning three of the four.

The Panthers welcome back a surplus of stud players, including four-star inning back Caden Durham (LSU), four-star cornerback Ka’Davion Dotson -Walker, 2025 cornerback Javion Holiday (Texas A&M), defensive lineman Alex January (Texas), 2025 five-star receiver Dakorien Moore, and five-star edge Colin Simmons (Texas). Also, junior-to-be quarterback Keelon Russell passed for over 2,300 during the championship season.

North Shore is not accustomed to the rearview after winning three of the four Class 6A Division I title versus Duncanville. However, it holds down the No. 2 ranking. The Mustangs will depend on junior quarterback Kaleb Bailey who suffered a torn ACL last season. At his disposal, receivers Christopher Barnes and Deion Deblanc are talented.

Two teams to watch, No. 3 DeSoto and No. 5 Westfield. Both are loaded and will meet the top teams when the Eagles host Duncanville in a district battle on October 27, 2023. Westfield will look to avenge one of the worst whippings (55-25) in school history when it hosts arch-rival North Shore on September 08, 2023.
