Costly turnovers add to Bobcats down time

Cy-Fair – It was nothing fancy about the Rams offense. Run right, run left with its star tailback.

Senior running back Rennie Childs rushed for 251 yards on 27 carries and a touchdown to lead the Cy-Ridge Rams to a 31-20 district win over Cy-Fair Thursday night at Ken Pridgeon Stadium.
The Rams improve to (3-1, 3-0) with the win.
The talented Childs had his way with the No. 2 ranked district 17-5A defense. He simply ran through, down the field and around Cy-Fair. With that in mind, the Bobcats worked diligently to get back in the game.
“We’ve worked hard on our running game. The success goes to the offensive line”, says Cy-Ridge’s running back Rennie Childs.
Cy-Fair trailed 24-14 with 11:16 left, but trimmed the lead 24-20. After losing four yards on its first two plays from the 26 yard line, the Bobcats peace together a 74-yard drive which featured the rushing of super sophomore running back Jacorey Aleem.
Senior quarterback Logan Taylor’s 26-yard pass to WR Preston Wallace down at the Bobcat’s 48, opened the running lanes as Aleem and Taylor took turns caring the ball, until reaching the end zone on a 6-yard Aleem touchdown.
However, it wasn’t enough to halt a game sealing 93-yard Ram’s march. Which consumed, 4:10 of the clock. Two plays later, Cy-Ridge suffered a couple of setbacks. A holding and a delay of game penalty forced a first and 22 from its 12 yard line. But Childs and quarterback Darious Crawley found running room through Cy-Fair’s defense.
“The first half was kind of a scoring fest and I think the defenses got some things going. Somehow, we worked it out. I’m just proud of our kids. They did such a dang good job of defending,’ Ram’s coach Gary Thiebaud said. It’s always a battle with Fair; they have a great coaching staff. Their kids do a great job. I was proud of the defense. We bend and gave up some yards but we fought.
Right after, sophomore receiver Kemah Siverand turned a short swing pass into a 44 yard gain down inside the Bobcats 15 at the 14 yard line. Crawley capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run and junior kicker Marlon Cardenas added the extra point to give Cy-Ridge a game deciding 31-20 margin with 2:42 left.
“It’s a disappointing loss for us. Our kids fought hard and played hard. We didn’t make some plays that were there and we needed to make them and we had some turnovers that put their offense back on the field,” Cy-Fair coach Ed Pustejovsky said, who admitted, with a running back like Rennie, you can’t allow that.
Cy-Ridge opened the scoring with a 2-play 69-yard drive which was highlighted by Childs 66-yard touchdown run. Cardenas tacked on the extra point to give Cy-Ranch a 7-0 lead with 11:03 left in the first quarter.
The Bobcats was three and out on its first drive before catching a break, when defensive back Troy Sorrells stopped Rams punter Cardenas at the 41, who took a high snap and was unable to punt the ball.
With that momentum, Cy-Fair marched 59 yards in two plays and scored on junior fullback Drew Tobler’s 57-yard touchdown catch and run to knot the game at 7, after kicker Chris Purvis extra point kick.
Both teams swapped scores. Cardenas nail a pair of field goals from 33 and a 37-yards for the Rams and RB Dillon Birden scored on a 1-yard run to give the Bobcats a 14-13 lead with 7:07 left in the second quarter.
Moments after, Price Cole’s fumble at the Cy-Ridge’s 36 yard line on the ensuing kickoff may have hurt the Bobcats chances, holding a short lived lead.
It took Cy-Ridge three plays to regain the lead. Crawley scampered into the end zone to complete a 19-touchdown run, sending the Rams to a 21-14 halftime lead.
