The National High School Sports Spotlight Shines bright on Texas


Texas shines around the nation when comes to high school sports. There is no secret about the rich high school sports tradition here in the lone star state. You can always expect to see teams ranked among the top 25, 50, or 100 polls nationally.
In baseball Bellaire jumps nine spots to no. 2 in Baseball America and Corpus Christi Calallen coming in at no 16.
Bellaire, a national power for years returns an experienced team that fell short in the semifinals last summer at the state tournament in Round Rock. They are off to a great start at 10-0 and currently ranked No. 1 in class 5A. Calallen is no drop off by no means also a state ranked power in class 4A and is off to a great start as well, at 11-0.
In the USA Today Polls, boys basketball. Yates finishes as the top Texas team at No. 19 followed by Desoto and Strait Jesuit at No. 20 and 21 respectfully. Desoto shocked undefeated and 4th nationally ranked Strait for the class 5A state Champion.
Yates finishes the season ranked at No. 5 in Rivals and No. 11 by Rise Magazine.
Note: Tommy Mason Griffin and Keith Tiny Gallon is the boys representatives for the McDonalds All-American basketball game. Griffin a star point guard at Madison High school is a Oklahoma commit. Gallon from the Humble area in Atascocita is a star power forward at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia and is one of the reason for Oak Hills success this season.
The girls representatives are Brittney Griner of Nimitz High School and Kelsey Bone of Dulles High School. Griner ranked as the No. 1 player in the country by most publications is Baylor commit. Bones is a four year starter for the Vikings and is ranked as high as No. 2 in the country. Bones is looking at four different schools; Carolina, Illinois, Texas, and Texas A&M.
High School Basketball goes to another level
To get a glimpse of who might be the no. 1 in high school basketball team in the nation. Check out the Inarguable ESPN/Rise High School Invitational Tournament. For the first time in the history of high school basketball the no. 1 team and no. 2 team ranked nationally will play in an eight team tournament that could decide who takes home the no. 1 ranking.
The eight team Tournament will be held in Bethesda, Md. It will run three days starting on April 3rd at 2pm and all games will be televised live on the ESPN Networks. The semifinals to be played on ESPN2 at 11am and 1pm. The championship game will follow on Sunday April the 5th at 3pm on ESPN.
Here are the following matchups; at 2pm No. 1 Oak Hill Academy vs. Pinewood Prep (Summerville, S.C.); No. 2 Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) vs. Mountain State Academy (Beckley, W.Va.) at 4 p.m.; No. 9 St. Benedict’s (Newark, N.J.) vs. No. 37 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) at 6 p.m.; and No. 9 Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.) vs. No. 47 Friends Central (Wynnewood, Pa.).
In girls basketball Westbury Christian is ranked No . 10 at (42-1), Summit No. 24 at (34-4) and Nimitz No. 25 at (37-2). This was compiled by Rivals.
In girls soccer, Rise Magazine recognizes Kingwood as the No 1 team in the country with a record of 26-0-1, Reagan of San Antonio is in at No. 2 (20-0-2), The Woodlands No. 4 (19-1-3), Plano East No. 20 (15-4-5), J.J. Pearce No. 21 (19-1-2) and McKinney Boyd No. 25 (19-4-2).
Rise Magazine ranks Jesuit of Dallas as the No. 1 boys soccer team with a record of (17-0-2) followed by Clements of Sugar Land at No. 2 (19-0-3) and Belton No. 5 (42-1-0).
