Galena Park – It was supposed to be a defensive struggle just as the previous two meetings, but it wouldn’t be on this night. Last season Katy won 9-7 at Rhodes Stadium as did North Shore two seasons ago with a 10-6 victory at Galena Park Stadium.
Donavon Young’s 18 yard touchdown run capped a 14 play 70 yard drive that consumed nearly 6 minutes off the clock to give the Tigers a 7-6 lead that they wouldn’t give up.
The area’s top ranked Katy Tigers (1-0) defeated the error prone North Shore Mustangs 44-6 Friday night at Galena Park Stadium to give them the worst loss since playing at the stadium.
“It’s been a long journey back and I think we’ve gain the respect back a little bit. It wasn’t about losing, it was about the way we played and the way we prepared. I think the kids understand they have to play like this to have a chance”, said Katy’s Coach Gary Joseph.
Fumbling on the opening kickoff didn’t give the Tigers their best start but a strong ball controlled rushing attack that featured running backs Vernon Jeffries, Adam Taylor and Young wiped out any mistakes Katy made.
After spotting the Mustangs a 6-0 lead Katy reeled off 16 unanswered points when Colt Atwood took home a ten yard interception to take a commanding 16-6 lead into halftime.
“That was their favorite pass route going into the game. I learned it and I jumped. Stop in go I knew the safety had my back, I jumped the stop and he threw it right to me,” said Colt Atwood Katy’s Cornerback.
The Tigers defense played lights out most of the night holding No. 3 North shore (0-1) to only 186 total yards.
“I thought they had a great game plan, I thought they had their kids ready to play. We had some bad things happen to us early and I think it just kind of snow balled on us early,” said North Shore’s Defensive Coordinator John Kay.
Three North Shore turnovers led to the lopsided affair. The Mustangs fumbled twice, threw an interception and rendered a safety all deep in their territory.
The second half was all Tigers. Jeffries 38 yard touchdown reception from Haack and defensive end Matt Dimon’s 10 yard fumble return for a score sent the North Shore faith toward the parking lot.
“All week in practice Coach Joseph was talking about battling back from the lost last year and that’s what we did today. We started off slow today but hey every battle we got to fight and that’s what we did today,” said Donovan Young Katy’s Running back.
The Tigers rolled up 276 yards of total offense.
Katy’s Jr. Quarterback Brook Haack finished the night 5-of-10 for 95 yards and 2 touchdowns while Young pace the rushing with 103 yards on 21 carries and 2 touchdowns.
