Dugger’s inside the park home run and stellar mound presents aid Cougars
Round Rock – In reason years Tomball has etched its name among the nation elites but haven’t been able to put its name on a baseball state title. However, many words have been used to describe baseball, as a very unpredictable and surprising sport.
Throw in names such as Nick Banks, Ishmael Edwards, Robert Dugger, Eric Dunbar, Nick Falcone, Anthony Lucas and Dillion Menville, just to name a few and you have a supporting but not so surprising Cougar squad.
Just to mention MVP pitcher Robert Dugger who had an inside the park home run while going the distance, striking out six and Tomball won its first Class 4A State Title by defeating perennial power Corpus Christi Moody 6-1 on Friday night at the Dell Diamond.
In the state finals for the first time, the Cougars (35-4) showed no signs of first time tournament jitters, sweeping its way through Wichita Falls Rider in the semifinals and grabbing the crown on Friday.
Banks one of the much talked about Cougars on the season, but Friday night it was teammate Robert Dugger who took center stage on the mound and at the plate.
Dugger was brilliant throughout the game, but praised his defense as the focal point.
He was the highlight of the game after a first inning, inside the park home run, going 3-of-4 at the plate and picking up the MVP award. He finished the day with four of the teams’ six runs, surrendered six hits, and walked one while striking out six batters.
Experience over youth was the thoughts of Tomball’s Coach Doug Rush, referring to the senior laden Cougars.
Moody (33-7-1) who entered the state tournament for its 11th appearance, could never string together enough offense to surge a threat.
