Saints in deep hole
Shiloh Christian knows what it’s like to win by a large margin but this time the Saints were on the other end of the stick.
With an offense coming to town that can light up the score board quick, Trinity knew they would have to get in the end zone as often as possible.
Texas Defending Division I Class 5A State Champion Euless Trinity Trojans (2-0) entered the game as the top team by USA Today and showed a national audients by dominating Arkansas’s defending state champion (Springdale, Ark.) Shiloh Christian Saints 80-26 Monday afternoon at Cowboy Stadium in the Kirk Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic. The game was the first of a quadruple header at the Stadium.
For the second time in two seasons Trinity has reached the 80 point mark, beating Flower Mound 88-27 in the first round of last season’s playoffs.
“It’s a long way to travel to get our tails kicked like that. I was disappointed we didn’t make better decisions early on. I thought we made some mistakes in that first quarter that really hurt us and a team like that get the big lead it’s hard to come back. We knew we would have to play near perfect to stay with them. I wish we could have played a little better game,” said Shiloh Christians Coach Josh Floyd.
Seven first half touchdowns told the story in this one. The Trojans offense accounting for more than 700 total yards with 560 coming on the ground.
Junior Quarterback Kailahi Kautai led an offense that scored 10 touchdowns while Defensive back Q’Niko Thomas added a highlight reel 68 yard touchdown interception return that was good enough to make sport centers top plays of the day. The performance gave the Trojans a total of 11 touchdowns on the day.
“Heavens no (when asking Coach Lineweaver about the total points they scored). I never am good at guessing, I don’t even try. I just want our guys to give great effort and play with class,” said Trinity’s Coach Lineweaver.
Terrance Tusan led the rushing attack with 130 yards and two touchdowns while Tevin Williams added 112 yards and two scores.
“First quarter we came out with a big bang, and in the second half our second string came out and had a big bang, all of it was good,” said Euless Trinity’s Receiver Brandon Carter.
Shiloh Christian (1-1) the 11 time Arkansas State Champion made the 326 mile trip from Springdale (AR) to get a taste of Texas High School Football.
A short pooch kick keyed the Trojans first drive that only took three plays, covered 51 yards with Tevin Williams slicing through Shiloh Christian’s defense and diving while putting the ball over the goal line for the 7-0 lead.
“With their quarterback you can’t drop your coverage; he (Shiloh Christian’s Quarterback Kiehl Frazier) got us a couple of times. We were able to adjust a little and not let them get behind us. I didn’t think we played that great on offense last week and that was our focus and we wanted to play a little faster with our offensive line. We’ll look at the video here in a few minutes and see if we’ve gotten better but it look like we did alright,” said Trinity’s Coach Steve Lineweaver.
After the Trojans second touchdown of the day, Shiloh Christian showed their backbone when RB Garrett Harper return the kickoff 96 yard to trim the lead to 14-7.
After a brief defensive stand The Trojan would add to their lead.
Auburn commit, Shiloh Christian’s Quarterback Kiehl Frazier looked very poised throwing a 71 yard strike to WR Zann Jones who out ran the defense to the end zone to keep the game close at 24-14, early on before things got out of hand.
The second half was more of the same with the Trojans using their backups.
